Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@theycallmemorty @paulg Were my *code* contributions to Stack Overflow significant in its success? Not really. Not at all, in fact.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@theycallmemorty @paulg Writing code is almost always the least effective method (by a considerable margin) of reaching a particular goal. Every second Paul spends writing code today, for example, is ultimately wasted.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg That's interesting. I have zero desire for any of my children to be programmers.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JustinTPriest @MeganRisdal @KeirRice @juliasilge were you also leaving a comment versus an answer (or an edit)? The former requires 50 rep because it isn't a core Q&A activity. Check out https://t.co/QpiBf849bw

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KeirRice @MeganRisdal @juliasilge friction is the goal when it comes to comments (versus answers); it's similar to the way wikipedia works. See https://t.co/QpiBf849bw

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles it's like we're arguing about what shade of brown the poop is

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KeirRice @MeganRisdal @juliasilge sounds like you tried to leave a comment instead of an answer; posting answers requires no reputation (or even an account)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@HippieDalek someone needs a shave

@codinghorror
@dsteele713 @spacexonaut but yeah, we won't see 2x in 2028.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dsteele713 @spacexonaut the web scores are quite good, considering. Basically 2x since 2011.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles oh yeah versus alllll the other "great" airlines

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DavidCasselTNS if that is what @pinboard tells me to do, then that is what I will do.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@keerthiko I think it is, yes. The intent is "never be absolutely uncritical of anyone" e.g. nobody gets a pass because they're some kind of saint who never makes mistakes, gets angry, gets upset, etc etc etc etc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nathanmacinnes it's unlikely Joel and I would want to be running mates

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@keerthiko more seriously though, that's not the intent. Don't seek out being critical, that leads to pedantry. Seek out never being completely uncritical. Kinda different meaning.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@keerthiko I ain't not never disagreeing with that nohow

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I guess it just makes me happy that people can learn never to look at ANYONE uncritically. Humans are unreliable.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CesarAndreu I just send it wherever @Pinboard tells me it will be the most effective.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the total amount I spent on politics prior to 2016 was $0. So *that* changed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 @alexhillman As an open source project ourselves, we use Mattermost which is open source.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi I'm telling you I don't even like dark mode white on black! I am NOT a fan! But the data tells the story!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi LISTEN UP STEVEN YOU CAN'T STOP PHYSICS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi believe me, I find this result annoying too because I don't like white-on-black at all

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi it's true though! You can fire up the kill-a-watt and test yourself, the bigger the display, the more pronounced the effect is https://t.co/DQ18Olp7Tv

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dj_ir0ngruve @stevesi (swoon)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi though if OLED comes to pass on desktop, laptop, and tablet 🙏 .. there is a legit powersaving argument to be made here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi Tripling down on 'even darker mode'

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nabeel @johnolilly well it is true that Fortnite is babbys first social network, of sorts..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnolilly Fortnite hasn't been too challenging with my 10 year old but his gaming setup is immediately next to my desk so I get to intervene as much as needed..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Give it some good skritches on its fur

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnolilly My kids seem to laser hone into just a few (approved, fwiw) activities on their iPads so they aren’t experimenting with anything that’s out there

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@HanneyChris @siracusa Nice good to hear will give this a shot!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_jenruss let's see.. eighth grade would be.. age 14? Sounds good to me!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa It it just a lot of "interactive first person reading" or it is a reasonable game as well? For example, I wasn't a fan of Gone Home, though I didn't *hate it* per se, it wasn't really for me.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DocPop as if I needed another reason to hate mobile apps

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JHellings watch the individual shorts though, not just the trailer

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Well SOMEONE at Weyland-Yutani corp sure loves them some Xenomorphs https://t.co/EgcHp41DvN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Gryzor watch the Alien short films in my reply.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For contrast, watch the Alien 40th anniversary short films. These are all *very* impressive CGI. Worlds better than what passed for big budget films in 2007! Stunningly good. https://t.co/V2DVEBt8PL

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jongalloway @dotnet or mayyyyyyyyyybe people need some extra.. ✨ LUCK?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deanputney keepin it real.. REAL OPTIMISTIC

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @SpreadTheVoteUS I agree 100% however, banning vans full of the elderly from voting wouldn't help Republicans as older people skew heavily conservative. Maybe they just cherry picked examples that make them look fair? Not sure.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza @jongalloway Remember you can rub his head for good luck, it works 🎲

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente Not really, it just dismissed the fiction that you will ever be deploying to a Windows server

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg #2 is the only viable solution, everything else is deluding yourself to some degree.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg well, you know my advice. Get feedback on ideas on Twitter.. then write a more complete, longer form blog piece based on that initial feedback.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg well, 1980, I guess. A lot can happen in 40 years.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg I still say that society has barely come to grips with our new reality: a computer in every pocket, 24/7, always connected. It's funny that Microsoft's original vision of "a computer on every desktop", which seemed so radical in 1970, was off by .. many orders of magnitude.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg this is also why it's a suuuper bad idea to get into an argument with someone who is retired.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg This is not new. The most persistent people are enabled by online tools being available 24/7, and computers now being in every pocket and always connected.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@brunolemos then they need to turn off oAuth entirely. The defaults are unsafe as *hell*.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@currentlyoom before declaring this your favorite {item in your collection}, make sure the moneymoon is over.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@samsaffron @natfriedman honestly if there can't be any other GitHub oAuth scopes between "full access" and "nothing" I recommend FORCEFULLY DISABLING OAUTH FOREVER. It's really.. that.. bad. And it's not going to get better.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@natfriedman We.. don't.. want to prevent oAuth apps. We want a scope between "literally everything" and "literally nothing". Read only is ideal!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@garethadams "GitHub apps equally suck… but suck differently. You can give read only to all private repos… BUT as soon as we want to write any comments on commits, we need to grant write Permission on 'contents'" from @samsaffron

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@snellingio @Paritoshmmmec @natfriedman @github yeah it's really bad, especially since the default action is so dangerous.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
TL;DR there end up being two methods of "access" to GitHub repos with oAuth -- full permission including write and create repo, and.. uh.. no access at all? Something safe like "read only" through oAuth is impossible, which is kinda insane.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie It's been *really* interesting to see this observation play out in the YouTube reboot, Cobra Kai.. which has absolutely no business beeing as great as it is https://t.co/7so3qV61Sj

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Eduardo_Gpe That’s what happened to old links. It still works though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is a very deep cut, whoever liked this from 2007

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa If it were up to the men, there would be a whoooole lot less children. Which is kinda what the planet needs long term anyway.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joffreyjaffeux your response rolled an 8

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I can't stop rolling this ridiculous thing. It's like RNGesus is speaking directly through me 🙏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Supermathie old news my man https://t.co/cIIMyigFkY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt that's just math, man!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Not arguing or disagreeing at all, I'm honestly curious how you would run the verification program if you were in charge. Because I have ideas 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz The cited article is from 2017. Didn't Cloudflare change their policy since then on sharing information about complaints? Is there a newer article about this?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Aw yiss look at what I just rolled 😎 https://t.co/EGcsAU0SgZ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@simon_j_parker 4 seasons was a lot of time, and the ending is .. weird.. so I'm not sure. It had its moments for sure, but as a coherent end-to-end story maybe not.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Thank the gods I'm frakkin' done with this thing. No, I didn't think season 4 was a letdown, you could kinda see all the weirdness slooowly amplifying in earlier seasons
