@froderosand @firefox Apple's A12X is monstrously good. My machine is i7-7700k.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshvickerson @firefox @discourse is 100% JavaScript so.. yeah, it does. Big time. Learn you some history here https://t.co/ZWZdqlTqXY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwodtke disagree, it is IRC in a new dress.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zrc210 is there a howto on that?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_0rax pff easy with DOCKER™ https://t.co/TVEj6SvejA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_0rax can I trust this "discourse" software tho

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
giving it a shot, just set up on a Raspberry Pi 3b+ https://t.co/KjvbX6V04h

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is the kind of bullshit I have to deal with https://t.co/dbjyZp6Gh0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tarun doubtful but you could watch the F12 network console to find out if you are curious

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paularmstrong what version of Chrome? I'm on 74.0.3729.169

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paularmstrong just vanilla Windows 10 Chrome

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@holymisha @katy_milkman @R_Thaler @CassSunstein @dilipsoman yeah and make it some funny thing so people are more willing to do it.. I like that

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@katy_milkman @R_Thaler @CassSunstein @dilipsoman "take a picture of this on your phone" would have been a smarter design

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@davidcadrian @Pinboard yeah David is right. This doesn't mean what you're implying it to mean. Webauthn means all websites can more easily use hardware keys for login and that's a GOOD thing. https://t.co/7CnW0kfQjS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza unless you can weigh yourself in 3D touch pressure it sucks

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles if I don't get to blow shit up, it's not a game. At least not one for me.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @angealbertini this shirt speaks to who you are as a person

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@co60ca Would you really want 5, 10, 15 and 20 year old people learning side by side? Even if you rule out the physical differences, it makes sense for learners of similar level to stay together, and apart from other levels.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@co60ca The primary illusion here is that “one site fits all”. Investors realllly want it to be that way because they like the returns from massive monoliths like Facebook. But the harm from force fitting everyone into one place is also quite profound.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@co60ca To be honest the answer has been to create multiple instances of SO in different languages, which get repeated questions, albeit in other languages. Over time I have become a fan of a “beginner focused” Stack Overflow with relaxed rules, at a different URL

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BrentO @LordOfTheData @GFritchey @sqlstudent144 @shanselman Yes thank you I have MORE people writing bad code than @shanselman therefore winning 🥇

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@co60ca I agree that SO badly needed a better step by step wizard when asking a question to explain its wiki and prior research requirements. That does exist now, thankfully, as of a few months ago. More detail at https://t.co/QpiBf849bw

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT Also there is a REALLY REALLY good bit on this in Dear White People S2.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life There is a kayfabe aspect here .. https://t.co/yrgSlzpoYS .. but honestly? The problem is trying to do this stuff ON TWITTER, eking it out in 280 char homiles. That's the massive 🐘 in the room being ignored in that thread.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT you gotta give up Twitter if you want to say complex things without endless and pointless fighting. Honestly I wish more people would write blog pieces and link to them. 280 chars too seductive and quick

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT pushing complex, nuanced ideas through a tiny Twitter straw is such a bad idea in general. The medium is partly the message

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lutherlowe @cgst @timoreilly I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and go work for Wikipedia, if that's what you truly believe.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard It’s more like a domain name lapsing and falling into the hands of spammers

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cgst @lutherlowe @timoreilly This isn’t really about the data or even Wikipedia, it is about who his employer is

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BrunhildeVink @amasad @paulg just curious what the data shows, not advocating any particular viewpoint

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard QUESTION: will it run on my beloved Loudong SB250 phone

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SwiftOnSecurity it is nice, but you know, it'd be a real cryin' shame if anything .. happened.. to your per transistor SQL Server Enterprise Licensing Agreements. Oh did I say PER TRANSISTOR? I guess I did .. <exaggerated shrug> fuggedaboudit

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
it is incredible how this show effortlessly shift from drama to horror movie from one moment to the next. Those geiger counters ticking, ticking, ticking ever faster until they make one continuous unbroken tone.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zerophases @b0rk basically it is a suuuper cheap insurance policy. The idea is you don't ever need to collect, but when you do..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie Scout is very interested. Do lots of pinwheels.. hardcore pinwheels https://t.co/lamJJwR9dQ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@b0rk I can't emphasize enough how important it is to have swap space configured in this scenario. Sucks because cloud providers HATE swap and disable it out of box, but a little bit of swap will save your butt over and over, and you're paying for it thru drive space cost anyways

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I am breaking this up into 4 servers sent to 4 folks, so post those Action Plans©

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_roryturnbull schweiken

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hattie_T_Cat yeah, kinda

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jeffehobbs it's a step in the right direction, though we tend to use multiple operating systems from wildly incompatible companies.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gooseyard To be fair it looked much better in motion, I think it's the digital camera affecting the refresh rate etc. Still fairly low res though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Yeah but if the game sucks you could have infinitely awesome skins and dances and it would not matter. Symbiotic relationship. Epic is knocking it out of the park here to a historic degree on every level. There will books written about this one mark my words

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Sort of, the core game has to be interesting plus they change the map and game modes and weapons and vehicles constantly.. so actually no.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pmkoom @discourse I suggest starting with a free trial at https://t.co/lHKvIkjRrA first, our trials are really and truly free, we never bill unless a subscription is explicitly confirmed. If you like it, then you can embark on self hosting

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@timheuer @discourse reply with your ACTION PLAN, but it has to host some Discourse .. of course

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
if you really sweet talk me (I do love a good Action Plan) I might even throw in those TMNT nunchuks

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CaseyNewton no human should wield this kind of power

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@samsaffron @qrush basically Macs kiiiinda suck for developers these days, there's your deeper "unpopular opinion" truth @searls

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dweinberger @KelloggsUS they did you a favor, throw 'em all out, try a better class of snack food next time!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@arielwaldman @ev super telling that @jack was aware, like had an actual phone call about this aware, and just.. didn't care.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley @textfiles oh yeah I'm sure greyscale is fine! two bit black & white.. notsomuch

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles we were already straddling the Hipster Razor here with this and black and white DOOM just puts any end to that particular fantasy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles uuugh black and white doom

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lexm4rk I do not, but I would love to learn why. Riot, as news in the last ~12 months showed us, had a lot of internal toxicity as well which is .. unfortunate.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jsalsman @jonny_boy27 it definitely varies WIDELY by region and that's my overall point

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mvirkkunen Also people into this stuff tend to be VERY expressive in sharing freqently their.. "opinions"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mvirkkunen it can be.. problematic. Here's one example, judge for yourself. https://t.co/I64gQ1hwZK

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jonny_boy27 they're very noisy about expressing these opinions as well. See a few polish coder HN comments (not marked with nationality / location, because nothing ever is) and you'd conclude "coders are hella toxic and regressive, time for SOME BUCKLE UP TWEETS"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jonny_boy27 you haven't debated any Polish coders recently. It's.. ugly. https://t.co/I64gQ1hwZK real live example here https://t.co/zUC6gWPcpN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I mean yeah there's some politically bad stuff happening in the USA right now for sure but it's peanuts compared to what's going on in other places in the world, and has been for decades.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
one thing that irritates me about people providing "hot takes" on HN culture: they cite super regressive opinions from programmers who DEFINITELY don't live in the USA as "representative" of consensus views. It's a worldwide site and some countries are .. uh.. not very woke?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TitPetric another subtlety, but it is doubtful that content would be appealed to get here in most cases

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bentorkington I viewed Slashdot as the Galapagos island of social software. A freaky island of weirdness, unrelated to anything that came after it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
There is a Mandelbrot set of exploding recursive subtleties here, all of which matter and change both the outcome and the future process. Note that Riot’s Tribunal system was abandoned — https://t.co/JhqCjOWVSk

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bentorkington Slashdot has a jury selection?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RageousX Yes that is another subtlety

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The second is that human culture varies widely and kinda radically by country, so you’d need to force fit selection to a region around the person being flagged (or I guess decide “we are a {country} site, deal with it sunglasses gif”

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is actually not a bad idea; having built and deployed systems like this, I have many.. thoughts. The first one is that your user base needs to be enormous to have flagging and disputes come up with anything resembling regularity.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@keerthiko Or watching movies and tv shows over and over

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Everyone jokes about this but as a branding strategy it is genius level

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dholth also no titanium = no winner

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dholth why can't first place be COPPER that's all I'm saying

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles good luck deleting the 🤡

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rayhatfield it could have been FAR worse. That's the really scary part!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
so what I'm saying is... acute massive radiation poisoning.. *not* a good way to go! Nooo!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain saturday night's all right for fighting Mr Train

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@0x_4B1D Yep, I'm sure. Check the wikipedia entry if you don't believe me. https://t.co/eunk3e3tks

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@0x_4B1D not really. GPU does all that. https://t.co/wDRHEugaCz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ID_AA_Carmack so many great stories about this from your old buddy Abrash 😉 https://t.co/CByPjrYwtq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@0x_4B1D almost nothing real uses AVX

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz shrubbery in the pants time https://t.co/9HgG71FD7W

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Also I'm super happy you can turn off the AVX/AVX2 power viruses in mprime now! https://t.co/sMhz38mfOP

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz wait Morrisey is a Nazi now? well heaven knows I'm miserable now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@shog9 more effective to ignore your enemies in my experience and it drives them CRAAZY
