I still don't feel Big Little Lies *needed* a season 2, but holy cow does it ever so perfectly nail that particular California microclimate (Monterey). Just aces it. 👌

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@benedictevans I dunno, unleashing YouTube and WhatsApp and Instagram to make their own product and platform decisions free of the Parent Corp Strategy Tax would be a plus on a bunch of levels.

@thesa050 no I have watched Hulu just fine with this enabled.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eliistender10 Stop, collaborate and listen

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
One week later, zero issues encountered, and it is sooo nice for every single device on the network to have instant always on automatic zero configuration ad blocking that “just works”. 👍

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshua_marshall oops lol

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
oh also I should have mentioned, you add up that chi-squared value per side, to a total deviation for the whole die. It kinda makes sense, imagine a perfectly random set of rolls, and see how close to that you get (or don't)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
it's pretty easy to run this test: roll at least 10 times per side (ideally more), subtract results from "perfect"(e.g. d4 = ten 1/2/3/4), square it, divide by number of rolls, then look up the critical chi-squared value for v= number of sides minus one https://t.co/BvRze9b1Xt

@codinghorror
@splattne did I ever tell you about that one time in college I left my keys in the refrigerator? That was not a good time!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 Incorrect. “Damn these stumpy arms!” had zero place in any black mirror episode everrrrr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@psaffo This is why you gotta play more videogames Paul! You learn how to navigate levels on sight!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Stuartq @petemohanty @drob OH MY GODDDDD you have no idea 😱
that said I completely agree "learning how to search" is the new "learning how to learn"
that said I completely agree "learning how to search" is the new "learning how to learn"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@petemohanty @Stuartq @drob Perhaps his comment applies to real world students (in his nearby physical area) versus the global world of online "students".. who often do not search before asking.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Stuartq @petemohanty @drob is it? I explicitly said "bad students". He said "telling a good student". Let's talk about how to discriminate between those two cases? Because that lies at the heart of those who get "have you tried searching?" said to them in the first place..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@petemohanty @drob that's not what is being said here though. You're attacking a strawman you made up.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@petemohanty @drob bad students don't put forth the effort to actually search for the answer, they just want someone to hand them a solution on a silver plate.. all "ask", no effort

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ideologue oh yes this one was 5 weeks https://t.co/40tYrNNTbL

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MutualArising @Pinboard the entire Vox network could disappear from the planet tomorrow and nobody would notice. Compare with Twitter, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Cloudflare, Apple, Microsoft. Sure, this stuff is easy when the stakes are so low.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@betsyphd on-the-actual-nose mustaches are the best

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard oh no, whatever shall I do if Polygon and The Verge stops.. writing .. the same exact content as 50 other websites?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bestebreurtje @codepo8 I think it's already possible with the open source router firmwares

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @KevinSavetz oh my god TAKE ALL MY MONEY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard You should really watch season 5 episode 2 of black mirror, it is right up your proverbial alley

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@codepo8 It has been working FANTASTIC so far

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
My devices are charged AF 😤

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kumarharsh I don’t feel it can be rated the same as a non interactive show. I thought it was great though, fantastic concept well executed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kumarharsh Are you high right now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
all right this third episode "Ashley Too" is.. uh.. what's the right word... *bad*? I mean it's kinda OK but it's not really a Black Mirror episode in tone, content, theme.. or anything? Might be the worst episode of all seasons 😱

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"Smithereens" has some truly excellent digs at Silicon Valley. Looking someone up by their two factor phone number, activating the phone mic remotely, having more info on a suspect than the actual police *and* FBI, plus a ten day silent CEO desert cleanse 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
make that three 3️⃣ positive Black Mirror episodes: the most excellent "Fighting Vipers"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
seriously I can't really think of a harder show to watch than Handmaid? It is brutal. BRUTAL. At least Black Mirror had two, count 'em, *two* positive episodes (Hang the DJ and San Junipero).

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@m_adduci uhhh no, check the stats again. Quite the opposite my friend.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sankara the big tradeoff is weight though which is kinda bad for bikes. Not so big a deal for cars.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jduska @thedigitalbits nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jonniker @sarahjanet @betsyphd sadly probably generic Stuff White People Like.. The Wire, Breaking Bad, etc my two weird prefs that not everyone has seen are Leftovers and Rectify. Both amazing! https://t.co/q3sgGUNGso

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
funny thing is the underlying intel platform mobo this SoC is mounted on, is quite modern: M.2 SSD, DDR4 at fast speeds.. just RIDONCULOUSLY slow CPU. An iPad, not even a Pro iPad at this point, would be sooo much faster than this Atom.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwodtke I try to limit my human interactions to just the super high quality people 😉

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjanet @betsyphd I still say it's one of the best shows I've ever seen, it is in my top 5 all time. A lot of people went into the show with a big Lindelof grudge over Lost but I never watched Lost.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@betsyphd @sarahjanet seasons 2 and beyond take very different trajectories, the general consensus is stick with season 1 through 6 episodes for some big dramatic reveals, if it doesn't grab you then it probably never will

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jeremysawesome oh my gosh you're right :/

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer it's a raspberry pi running Doom, really. Kind of fake news TBH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwodtke I think the solution for most folks is less interaction with other humans. Right now we're all *too* connected 24/7, and it's kinda unprecedented in human history.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwodtke there is zero value in any of those interactions. Well, zero positive value. There's negative value aplenty.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza yes but you also liked the Amazon Fire Phone, sooooooo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Stammy @jeffsand I've kinda standardized on the DAN A4-SFX which is damn near a perfect case IMO https://t.co/S3oP4PnlD1

this is of course in reference to the amazing and kinda hard to watch for all the right reasons When They See Us https://t.co/Q3yQBm7GrO

@wilshipley a picture of iTunes should be next to the dictionary definition of "uncontrolled software bloat". I am sure it was fine in, like, 2002.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevinmontrose @sassiestone this is the best take

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessfraz oh look they have some Intel D12s

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@HeatherMeeker4 @kemitchell very cool logo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi Some customers REALLY like dark mode though. And they'll love you for giving it to them. Easy win IMO, since it default off (obviously, because it sucks)

@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Also @paulg wants to roll back the clock to a time before tech dominated the stock market and society. The standards are higher now. Get used to it, or find another field. Complaining about the unfairness of the world is pointless.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Gryzor No, it seems very safe. Only DNS / DHCP is affected. Those are super easy to change

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg if nobody hates you, then you probably weren't doing anything very interesting anyway.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg At that level you are a major public figure. Comes with the territory, does it not? Maybe the flaw here is that we're not teaching people about this so they're suddenly unprepared for being notable figures, or even public figures at the extreme ends.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg I don't think that's quite right -- as you gain power, you gain critics and judges. It is correct to question power.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill QUESTION CLOSED

@magnayn you can whitelist it via the web interface

Jeff Atwood

@jacek_spiewak no, but it is very early, tiny amount of actual browsing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
and now the most important screenshot of all.. https://t.co/XHb4OWeVMR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@QuinnyPig Never underestimate the cost of having to do what someone else tells you to do.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DennisCode @slace They are super cheap, set up two. One can be alternate DNS.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Now the whole network is served via DHCP pi-hole https://t.co/kEIRuVuF6Z

@castrojo I see, it is gigabit over USB 2.0, but that is still a big jump https://t.co/FXbMCAkVe0 https://t.co/QMOsbCyoba

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@castrojo hmmmm can you elaborate? This is the 3b+ so it has gigabit etc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessfraz this is the single best travel tweet I've ever read and I've been on twitter since frickin 2007

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I tried to warn you all. AVERT YOUR EYES!! https://t.co/sAVsz7cDl1

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshvickerson @firefox @discourse rule of thumb is anything over 20% difference is noticeable. Less than that, it is somewhat debatable. This is ~35%. So .. yeah.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@krmaher I just loved that particular comment (from a while ago) and I always remembered it. 🍻

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@krmaher EVERY time I see these kinda photos, I think, "es un modela de perfumas?" 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshvickerson @firefox @discourse well given obscene CPU speeds (qualcomm has been a blocker there for a LOOOONG time on Android) all is good. Latest qualcomm is roughly iPhone 7 speeds which is well into 'good enough'
