@billforsternz @siracusa It’s an interesting discussion; why haven’t we moved to a baseline of 32gb or 64gb? 8gb and 16gb are still super common. I remember 24gb being exotic in 2010. Maybe 16gb, unlike 640kb, “should be enough for everyone?” 🤔

@spies_please had multiple opportunistic car break ins (you have 3 kids, you start forgetting a lot of stuff, like to lock your van regularly). They always stole the GPS, but in later years they stopped stealing the GPS, wasn't worth enough $ and people use smartphones for that anyways

@gpapilion what's also counter-intuitive (especially to the Android folks who are stuck with crap Qualcomm hardware) is that faster hardware can *save* battery life, because it is quicker to get to idle state. The exception is 100% usage but that's so very rare.

range of avg framerates at 1080p very high quality is 165 fps (i9-12900k) - 66fps (Ryzen 5 1600). Of course, if all you want is 1080p 60fps stable an i3-10105f or better will do.. but it's practically unheard of to see these kinds of CPU perf differences in games at 4k very high! https://t.co/obLf6UwvVV

@SirCrest I don't want fake 4k, I want real 4k! But if the visual impact of raytracing is significant enough to justify it I could see using DLSS at 1440p.. I personally don't feel the "real" reflections add enough to spider-man to justify the extreme cost

@badp @robertauger no; it just means they get a subpar user experience. Ideally I want every device to have a speedometer 2.0 score of 100+, and that's *only* possible with the 888 which is .. what.. 1 year old? AMD and Intel have at least closed the gap, at a high TDP cost.

@gingerjoos eh, not quite. I think you need a Speedometer 2.0 score of at *least* 50 to be decently responsive on the modern web, and ideally well over 100. There's been progress on the Qualcomm side but glacially slow relative to Apple/Intel/AMD

@woidda Single-threaded perf is the single most relevant stat to typical computer usage. Having 128 cores doesn't matter for 99% of computing tasks. Unless you regularly render 3d scenes on your phone, or compile chromium on your phone ;)

@lilychxi none; single threaded perf correlates almost exactly with general usage behaviors. You could argue that iPhones have far exceeded "good enough" at around the iPhone 12/13 level and I would not disagree. But kicking Intel's ass is the name of the game, longer term.

A big part of the magic of the Steam Deck is the custom SoC with improved GPU. We have obscene amounts of CPU power; why not subtract unnecessary die space taken up by "n more cores" and improve the GPU? That's what Valve gave us, for cheap: https://t.co/A33GfDvSGT

@gknauss For me it's an addiction to the better cameras. Macro mode on 13 (I have a 12) would be useful in a bunch of cases. And this gen definitely stepped up on the camera, at least on the pro..

Difficult to find things to turn off that would make a meaningful difference; after air conditioning (which we don’t have) not many big electricity consumers in the house. Gas water heater, gas dryer, gas stove.. I guess avoid doing laundry and using the electric oven? 🤔 https://t.co/Plo8RtZ4iC

Just as a caution, I had to get the LR4 replaced under warranty. Seemed to me like the torque sensor was miscalibrated; would complain daily “too much force!! Halting!” Then try again and succeed.. anyway let’s see how the replacement does.

@mathowie It's also funny (obviously) because Al is a fairly devout christian, never curses, etc. But yeah. I can't wait to see this!!
