@codinghorror
@paulg w/r/t cheese and bread, the American versions are optimized for shelf life and distribution, *not* taste. That's the signature.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life huh, I've seen the opposite.. men so traumatized by dating apps that they practically become radicalized. Anyway, it's a totally different world for sure. Yet another way the smartphone changed everything.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And there were more! https://t.co/43ZFAX8uEa

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@billforsternz @siracusa It’s an interesting discussion; why haven’t we moved to a baseline of 32gb or 64gb? 8gb and 16gb are still super common. I remember 24gb being exotic in 2010. Maybe 16gb, unlike 640kb, “should be enough for everyone?” 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Oh this has been the case for many years now. Since iPhone 11 at least. Once they got the low light stuff nailed down.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bruceariggs even in the 80s this was in progress, with typewriters mostly and slowly transitioning to early home computers like Apple //

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lmamakos OMG I had forgotten about this, but me too! https://t.co/GMl0kI40Mh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa The wikipedia entry for it says he wrote the song lyrics in a few hours because confirmation of approval (he didn't want another Coolio confrontation) didn't arrive until last minute.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_Tomalak sometimes, change is good, and forward progress is made. Why fight the future instead of embracing it?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Imagine what universal basic income could do

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@donw well it has been 22+ years.. original song is from 1999 👴

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@donw 40" monitor and 100 gb of memory are still on track, at least!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Site is down, but.. enjoy https://t.co/g5CtoTjpsA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ignotofsky it's amazing! well done! 👏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
a bit more detail on what it does and how it works https://t.co/vzQO5YdlF8

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
My first thought on seeing this ad .. how completely unrealistic this "armor" is https://t.co/IcYhj7EZD7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please had multiple opportunistic car break ins (you have 3 kids, you start forgetting a lot of stuff, like to lock your van regularly). They always stole the GPS, but in later years they stopped stealing the GPS, wasn't worth enough $ and people use smartphones for that anyways

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gpapilion what's also counter-intuitive (especially to the Android folks who are stuck with crap Qualcomm hardware) is that faster hardware can *save* battery life, because it is quicker to get to idle state. The exception is 100% usage but that's so very rare.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente They added stuff tho https://t.co/QAtZ20cmAl

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@OscarRiba crysis could barely reach 60fps with anything!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life no, but you can add *friction* and make it more annoying to do those things, e.g. https://t.co/h45z1CbKsE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
also interesting is "why not connect a high end GPU via USB 4 / thunderbolt 3", which has.. some caveats. Note that the RTX 2070 number here is from the internal/mobile GPU inside the laptop https://t.co/LRZIg8H2hi https://t.co/WcDwLwuJEG

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@raphkoster it's cool! I was thinking about how there's such a strong distinction between vertical and horizontal games.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mikeleigh1010 yeah that's basically the only option for consoles at $300-$400 which purport to deliver "4k".. they gotta cheat like crazy.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
sadly that site has succumbed to internet rot, but https://t.co/EyLKuODLXV https://t.co/J8soYcirZZ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RafalPiton @mderenio better perf helps everyone! And this effort has seen dramatic software improvements since 2015. The Qualcomm hardware.. unfortunately.. continues to lag far behind where it should be. 😢

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@elsassph @stilescrisis @thefalken everything is supposed to get faster (and smaller and cheaper) over time, that's the whole point of computing. Qualcomm has been going in the wrong direction for 8 years. *How* is that possible?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
range of avg framerates at 1080p very high quality is 165 fps (i9-12900k) - 66fps (Ryzen 5 1600). Of course, if all you want is 1080p 60fps stable an i3-10105f or better will do.. but it's practically unheard of to see these kinds of CPU perf differences in games at 4k very high! https://t.co/obLf6UwvVV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SirCrest I don't want fake 4k, I want real 4k! But if the visual impact of raytracing is significant enough to justify it I could see using DLSS at 1440p.. I personally don't feel the "real" reflections add enough to spider-man to justify the extreme cost

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stilescrisis @thefalken yes! that's the problem! the lack of improvement compounds in both directions! 😭

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn very interesting point and perspective

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx @lilychxi https://t.co/2tM19VlQrE note that rendering a video, something that happens a lot in an era of tiktok all the time, takes 30+ seconds longer.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@badp @robertauger no; it just means they get a subpar user experience. Ideally I want every device to have a speedometer 2.0 score of 100+, and that's *only* possible with the 888 which is .. what.. 1 year old? AMD and Intel have at least closed the gap, at a high TDP cost.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gingerjoos eh, not quite. I think you need a Speedometer 2.0 score of at *least* 50 to be decently responsive on the modern web, and ideally well over 100. There's been progress on the Qualcomm side but glacially slow relative to Apple/Intel/AMD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jgstew I don't understand why Apple is so, SO far ahead of everyone else here. At least AMD and Intel have closed the gap on raw performance somewhat, but at the cost of much higher TDP

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dearchap video editing / encoding is quite common in the era of TikTok and check out how much faster Apple is at it https://t.co/2tM19VlQrE -- that's 2x faster, saving you over 30 seconds.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@neojp there is no throttling in iOS for web, quite the opposite. In fact we only see throttling on Android to cheat and have "better" battery life. It's notorious on the OnePlus and I've experienced it myself: https://t.co/7RQytjiB0A

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@neojp believe me, I wish Android had plenty of awesome fast SoCs to choose from! But they have.. Qualcomm. And that's basically it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CristanMeijer @Carnage4Life agree; it's an interesting case study in "don't build what the user asks for"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sysadmiral yes, and hardware 2FA beats most of it. That's the good news!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Just why Apple is *still* so incredibly far ahead of Qualcomm is one of the greatest mysteries of computing, for my money. https://t.co/JpuP8fsvsy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@woidda even then, 8 slow cores will get trounced by 4 fast cores all day, every day

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@woidda Single-threaded perf is the single most relevant stat to typical computer usage. Having 128 cores doesn't matter for 99% of computing tasks. Unless you regularly render 3d scenes on your phone, or compile chromium on your phone ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It's all the same classic timeless social engineering stuff, but I still feel sorry for the victims https://t.co/zDleiSVyqa

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thefalken No. Kicking Intel's ass is the name of the game. It's started to happen, and will continue to happen.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@brian_g_moore The main counterpoint I am sympathetic to is camera improvements, which have been substantial, especially in low light.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lilychxi none; single threaded perf correlates almost exactly with general usage behaviors. You could argue that iPhones have far exceeded "good enough" at around the iPhone 12/13 level and I would not disagree. But kicking Intel's ass is the name of the game, longer term.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@robertauger ah, the old "640kb should be enough for everyone" comment. The bus is right on time! (A more interesting and useful counterpoint is camera improvements in later gens)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@therealdarkmage you can buy a used 2018 phone that's as fast as the latest Android/Qualcomm stuff https://t.co/tiLyMwPaVG

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TallBlondeGuy Article also says this is the first year Apple has bigger market share in the US than Android. That's 100% related to pricing.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jlericson @shog9 Yeah also because megatopics were a problem, and an implicit cry for chat https://t.co/EDpQc4MVm9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life kind of an interesting case of intentionally not giving people what they want to maximize business outcomes. Netflix was the binge alternative, now it isn't. "build something people don't want"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@shog9 @jlericson we've added chat to Discourse as well. Long story, but it's kind of a fast lane / slow lane thing: https://t.co/mA4ak7ZvcN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TallBlondeGuy it was very, very expensive. Do you remember when Apple dropped the price? That was (and still is) unprecedented: https://t.co/Ko2ktNb8P7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TallBlondeGuy Not quite; lots of people still swear by physical keyboards and made a BIG, *BIG* deal about it back then. In the end, simplicity (less parts, easier to make) won, not "better typing".

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
which leads to, well.. everything after that, including T**mp https://t.co/h45z1CbKsE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jamesfmilne At least it's a guy; if it was a woman speaking, you'd be pilloried.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rossrubin @andrewmartonik (I don't mean to infer it would be the same person, but I'm sure someone, somewhere leads a life that charmed)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rossrubin @andrewmartonik fortunately both your mom and your drug dealer are both on Signal!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz Yeah there's a few channels like that for me. Unusual emphasis on words, odd cadences, etc. Not everyone has a voice for radio..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life They've said this before, many times. I'd wait until it's proven and done.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza I was worried about that one when I saw it trending

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@timbray this is a rational way to look at it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I also love Aliens: Fireteam Elite, totally different style of game (action), but really gets the core gameplay and Aliens lore / visual style down https://t.co/7La7gJKV9u

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Adamar09 @jwkingsman you can also open it and install a SSD later; that's supported https://t.co/RfulpQIotH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@javajosh chart strongly sorts by core count, if you read the legend on the left! All the ones on top are 64c/128t

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"the CDC only recommends using fans at temperatures below 95F/35C. Increasing hot-air circulation and sweat evaporation can actually speed up heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion. Unless you're able to use the fan to pull in cooler air from outside.." 🤔 https://t.co/8BrnUEdbjL
[image missing]

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwkingsman @Adamar09 yeah surprisingly the SD card doesn't make a huge difference, though it depends on the game. I ordered a second Deck with the minimum specs based on that result.. https://t.co/59TofUJDja

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@syntoythesis @Carnage4Life oh yes I am totally cheering for TikTok because someone, something needs to take down the cancer that is Facebook

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza it makes a lot more sense than the solid gold gen 1 Apple Watch. That was like a sobriety test. https://t.co/3HV6WIuKZ7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I wish. Instagram makes it virtually impossible to simply embed a photo these days (without their full JS tracking payload). Users are never, ever going to vote with their feet away from Instagram.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza I can't get past the shape. The "bean" shape is vastly superior in actual use IMO. Hardware is nice though. https://t.co/OH67y74hm2

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
A big part of the magic of the Steam Deck is the custom SoC with improved GPU. We have obscene amounts of CPU power; why not subtract unnecessary die space taken up by "n more cores" and improve the GPU? That's what Valve gave us, for cheap: https://t.co/A33GfDvSGT

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gknauss I seriously dislike memoji. The only thing worse is freakin' bitmoji. Viewing them causes me physical pain.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gknauss For me it's an addiction to the better cameras. Macro mode on 13 (I have a 12) would be useful in a bunch of cases. And this gen definitely stepped up on the camera, at least on the pro..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the guilty pleasure mindless gratuitous dude action movie trifecta for me is Crank, Shoot 'Em Up, and Transporter 1.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bootrino my educated guess is that there are feedback loops here we underestimated

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bdurrett it has gotten pretty bad with higher end GPUs, they can really draw 300-400w all by themselves. And the next gen will draw more power..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@christinaleo sadly this awesome version doesn't seem to be available anywhere https://t.co/qJqI0lIP5y

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gknauss Arby's is like hot dogs.. very good once a month, any more than that and it'd turn bad.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lordeagle yeah sounds like it was a rolling blackout aka "we'll force *some* of you to use less power, so that the overall grid can survive"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
now on Season 3, and it works well as a sort of spiritual sequel to Heavy Metal (1981) https://t.co/Uc3pNAxUxn

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Supposedly peak power use is 4pm - 9pm so an outage at 6pm is appropriate, I guess. The alert really should say “please turn down or temporarily turn off your air conditioning” IMO because that is, statistically speaking, where the vast majority of usage is

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The router is on battery backup though. https://t.co/p3Kbf7vmRA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Difficult to find things to turn off that would make a meaningful difference; after air conditioning (which we don’t have) not many big electricity consumers in the house. Gas water heater, gas dryer, gas stove.. I guess avoid doing laundry and using the electric oven? 🤔 https://t.co/Plo8RtZ4iC

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
That rooftop solar system with battery backup I ordered can’t get here soon enough.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@baishen Yeah mine got better for a bit after I reseated the sphere but then got MUCH worse. No pattern to it that I could discern

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Just as a caution, I had to get the LR4 replaced under warranty. Seemed to me like the torque sensor was miscalibrated; would complain daily “too much force!! Halting!” Then try again and succeed.. anyway let’s see how the replacement does.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RageousX @jeff_hanna I’ve finished that game twice!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Also, the whole “we can only uncover our emotional issues through eternal combat” resonates a lot with me as a man, for better or worse

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Thanks to those who encouraged me to continue (I did enable God Mode, which increases damage resistance 2% each death), there’s definitely a reason this game won a Hugo award! https://t.co/KprdEaPedY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Only 11.4 cubic feet, but 361kWh/year https://t.co/Kh3XhXfVw2

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie It's also funny (obviously) because Al is a fairly devout christian, never curses, etc. But yeah. I can't wait to see this!!
