@codinghorror
@DanielHoffmann_ It's very very good for gen1. Mostly I think they should take things away and simplify (and switch to OLED screen) for gen2.

@wilshipley all games *are* PC games, the moment that Microsoft and Sony switched to x86 / AMD architectures in the XBone / PS4 generations.. and good riddance to the weird PS2/PS3 architectures in particular. Whoo boy, you don't want anyone at Sony HQ to ever hear "we should build a CPU!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
One thing I've learned is that fully linear keyboards feel really nasty to me for some reason .. that horrible feeling of pressing the keys and bottoming out with no tactile bump in between.. https://t.co/eHfsFfELJN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
careful: I'm seeing quite a few movies here that really stretch the boundaries of "most people have not seen". I appreciate the recommendations, but it's supposed to be obscure movies off the beaten path. Brazil, for example, is a *fantastic* movie but quite well known!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bootrino I feel like a lot of people have seen this one.. doesn't quite meet the criteria?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spenmoneyfast This is definitely a sleeper win

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnnygf C'mon. Who HAS NOT seen this?! Doesn't meet the criteria!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@michael_mardahl I wanted to like this .. but.. man.. I came out of it thinking "wow, I truly understand why movies are never filmed in first person perspective now"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It’s not an addiction, because I can stop whenever I want! https://t.co/0yXp7Cq8Rx

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jensjonsson yes! I played this and couldn't believe how good it was. Wayy back in the day.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The govee one with the fisheye camera that dynamically matches backlight edge color with the edges of the image works IMO surprisingly well https://t.co/vsPUJfb8no

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I have seen the future, and it is.. icons on a background. https://t.co/htJbNEoBWZ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mikemackintosh I had forgotten this game existed, but definitely played it..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@boztank woo! Strappin' smartphones to your face has never been cooler! 👍

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It's been a while, but time for some Phreaking https://t.co/CanXZ269am https://t.co/wptGwG3TLS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GroundedRaptor it's so good!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Look on the bright side.. I get to use my own @discourse software to report the error (that topic does sound like *exactly* what I'm experiencing) https://t.co/W1yTClvUXO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Maybe I'll try finishing Gears of War.. sure! Or.. not. https://t.co/IyzoeuBNTr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Well, it sort of works. Whatever. I guess I have better things to do.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Updated video drivers and rebooted.. same result.. even starting a new campaign immediately crashes, so it's not the save file. Multiplayer works! Oh wait. This happens. I can play with an error dialog in the middle of the screen. Very consistent with all my Xbox One experience https://t.co/qYtwp5SFo8

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
You could argue maybe Al's biggest legacy is the *idea* of the Dick Tracy communicator watch? https://t.co/3lLdyoOXwU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Wow. Eventually upgraded to "Wrist Geenee" (1997) and "Wrist Wizard" (2011). https://t.co/35D2SQ73yz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Well, at least this part of the game will be extra extra satisfying https://t.co/HMO61hnR6H

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Tronetti with NFC they are more practical with phones. Or USB-C, but Apple has that lightning thing going on..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zengra you don't really need to know much about the person to get it to work, though -- phone companies hand SIMs out like candy to almost anyone who asks.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@benjaminmetzler barely.. that's like saying closing your front door is better than leaving it open, versus locking it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheDoctorBlue it is better than nothing but not much more, because phone companies hand out SIMs to anyone who asks like candy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"For most of the years since he built his first “Pribot,” Levandowski says, it’s felt as though he and his competitors were 90% of the way to full-blown robot cars" .. may I refer you to https://t.co/v4eBuGX75e

"Our driverless future is starting to look so distant that even some of its most fervent believers have turned apostate." https://t.co/2uYocALQ1g

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Also.. super chonk GPUs. Top is 4090 as delivered by Nvidia, some of the aftermarket 4090s are even bigger. Basically unless you have a 3090 now, you better bust out a measuring tape to determine if you can fit the 4090 in your case! https://t.co/tP69XnbWlR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill without looking, compression. How much does it compress uzing zip?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JohnONolan @robbyrussell @Ghost Subdirectory is a GIANT PAIN IN THE ASS to set up, for the record. Far more technically complex.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@burgerbecky @AlanSilvey there is no "high speed" hard drive.. only SSD and everything else!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
So apparently this is a trope now? https://t.co/Nl4faXkhwU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_paulstewart I'm not really blaming the author, it's hard to source everything you come across on the internet..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@fashy I disagree; I think it was a bad idea enabled by "because we can".. detect amount of pressure used

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I think of it more as The Onion of water https://t.co/vwQxzB2sRP

@codinghorror
I still have that TV, with the glasses and everything, and I may just dig them out to experience this glorious film which was made for 3D https://t.co/C8pQTDP6Mk

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Steve_Yegge good news! This feels like an excellent fit! 🙌

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this is how far back I have to move with the 12 to get an in-focus picture https://t.co/OZkDCbjbvt

@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 what are the other 9 games?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@betsyphd @burtonachitect simply blimp..y

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryanfalor I definitely had a busted model at first. I've had literally zero torque problems with the replacement.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Compare with 2019's Modern Warfare https://t.co/x9ANlUB42a

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Here's what used to be "amazing graphics" https://t.co/7R9A049VU0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Update: the replacement works perfectly. Zero overtorque errors. I can't overstate how much quieter the version 4 is (when in motion) over the version 3. It's practically a whisper compared to the older model.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles urgh it's sooo hard to go back to 1-bit.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And this one is alive! https://t.co/7q0Efry3Rq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@m_adduci I said *good* hardware

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tenderlove My son and I did not find it enjoyable at all

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PeterLaCombJr Neither Windows nor OS X is "simple".. I'd argue iOS and Android aren't any more, either.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
eh, looks like ChromeOS Flex won't support ARM (?!) so my dream of the best hardware (M1/M2) paired with the best operating system (ChromeOS) will have to be deferred. 😢 https://t.co/tOplYW7Ger

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@summitonthemoon it doesn't make sense, GPUs are different specialized task cores, CPUs are general purpose cores. One of these things is not like the other! Modern CPU design even has "performance" cores vs. "efficiency" cores..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wackie are they really that much faster than a 5950x (16c/32t) system? those aren't too expensive to build even with 128gb RAM.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Still going! https://t.co/7vTsGVXYbX

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sh4na we gotta come up with something better than "strap smartphone to face". That status quo is .. never going to provide an enjoyable experience for most people IMO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
but what's criminally underrated is the 2015 open world videogame. Highly recommended. https://t.co/ooRCCW9UT6

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
grease theft is .. still a thing: https://t.co/BXKfCPSxbO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sh4na It all hints at the weak technical underpinnings of "strap a smartphone to your face". We need to be able to project directly into the eye.

Jeff Atwood

How I wish Apple would let third parties create watch faces.. https://t.co/mDRiEkVc7a .. then of course there was the Fallout edition Android smartwatch.. https://t.co/RewXDLQZke

Apparently joysticks are now considered "boomer" input devices because you lose too many frames in the time it takes to physically move the joystick to trigger the switch? 🤔 https://t.co/hecf9Vf9T4

@codinghorror
Amazing how much effort and thought goes into modern fighting games https://t.co/rEgQVGdAhU -- https://t.co/hvpVa2Gsnl

@dysphoria_net there's an interesting parallel with graffiti here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@charlesarthur I used to buy every Surface Pro up until 8 or so. Now I just get chromebooks, and the best chromebook is the one with the M1 chip inside by definition.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
mostly I just don't need the complexity of OS X, and .. Chrome OS has gotten *ridiculously* good in the last decade. But per watt, nobody's hardware is better than Apple's. It's not even close.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wmspringer dream travel/work machine. For gaming, Steam Deck!

@lizardbill @emilynussbaum oh no, you must go back, it's really quite an incredible and unique show; the more I watched the more I liked it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@FailSeqProc @_rakshith_ravi_ it can be subtle, sometimes too subtle to justify the often immense performance cost. We'll see if the 4000 series changes that!
