@codinghorror
@bechtweets yep, totally correct

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
annnnd exactly zero of these power supplies can be purchased. Looks like availability in December? I'm just glad there's an actual solution on the horizon rather than "f**k everything, we're doing five power connections on a single GPU!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gamesbrainiac Well, the whole DLSS thing has made me a believer. Incredible improvements from v1 to v2 to v3.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@djbaskin An excellent member of the public!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Oh, I see, there's an ATX 3.0 PSU. Unfortunately this system doesn't have that.. https://t.co/3rpuHiMwMv

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@seannewbs I have a new system with this PSU.. https://t.co/oawVJNWbYG

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JamesBru best thing is to email team@discourse.org with specifics

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Warped_Horizon good idea, but geez, $100? And it's specific to the brand of the PSU..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DocPop I remember messing with WASTE on a forum. Forum is still there, running @discourse

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@billjohnston who is Tana? I guess I am one of the olds now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is kind of .. patently ridiculous in practice. Why haven’t we invented a single high power connector by now? This feels like duct tape and rubber bands, not a $1500+ product https://t.co/lDhylhahfd

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout Yes sure 120hz has been a thing for a while in iOS! Power consumption goes up a lot especially for games. The OS slows to 1hz updates to save power when idle but games can’t really do that.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tinkertim @lizardbill I don't think individual people need to understand the point or value of gateways for them to be effective for the larger community though.. "why do I need a driver's license to drive?"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@fachakraus You sorta *do* get that. Do 1080p on a 4090 at a locked 60fps and it doesn't draw a whole lot of power.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BuildItBusk @Harr0uet Apple isn't that far off.. I believe the highest end Max Pro Ultra (or whatever they call it) gets around 3070 levels? At a fraction of the power.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@raymondedwards that's surprising, did they add crazy stuff like raytracing to fortnite? Enable DLSS if you can. It's much better than I expected, with very little downside.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout yeah that seems like the only way to go. I've tried 120fps and didn't find it that different in practice, but I don't play competitively at all

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill this is kind of thing I wanted integrated into the Ask page, as an interactive real time tutorial

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente that's a great take and probably correct

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill correction; looks like huffpost went digging for clicks without fact checking

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BuildItBusk It wasn’t so bad for a while but has gone in a dangerous trajectory

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@snow_derg I just wish there was even one killer raytracing app / game where the raytracing made it drastically better than the shortcuts and hacks we currently use

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@miketheiron Does it though? Look at the 2019 flagship games and with a minor texture update they seem totally on par with todays best..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnvechey I'm with you but I will give it 6 months to see.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley I did, it's @discourse .. the problem is that everyone wants free server time, not free software

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
60fps is a fantastic baseline, but much to my chagrin, the data does seem to point to 120fps being better for competitive gaming. Tough to find actual experiments, but this one is decent: https://t.co/tvLY3KEgFb https://t.co/wtGXjYJUAy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JasonPunyon this is what @discourse is for.. and we just added real time chat for some two-lane highway fast lane / slow lane integration

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ericlaw well, we already built @discourse -- but it's only free as in "the software is free" not "we give you free server time to run it"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JasonDFW @misterparker yeah that's a totally different scenario. This is "absolute rule of one unhinged man" not "bought by a corporation with a known track record"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @paulg you could argue crypto did not pass the "Reasonably Credible" barrier, but.. Bitcoin still *exists* after so many years.. that's not nothing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life well, all VC work is gambling. That's why I credit @paulg for realizing this and simply saying "fund everything that looks reasonably credible", which is the smartest strategy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Here, Linus tests a 7900x / 4090 under load and has to go all the way down to a 550w PSU to have problems: https://t.co/8rOlxonIxm

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@scalablecory @AfroEagle It didn't say 500w min. It said 550w min. Considering I ran furmark plus prime95 (these are both INSANELY unrealistic load generators, basically power viruses!) and got well under 400w.. it's way way off.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AdamRosserRadio @chetfaliszek BF1 and BFV were quite good, but the major problem DICE has is not knowing when to stop. They add so much *crap* to their games that it's overwhelming for the players and the developers..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@seanish0v @chetfaliszek No, we want BF Bad Company 3. Dice simply does NOT understand simplicity. They always add way too much crap to their games. My favorite example is the pigeon hunt mode from BF1. WHYYY was that in the game? WHY! https://t.co/RqvgfDNh0e

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek @LordOfTheLeg Yeah V was very good. 2042 was.. an incomplete mess and still kinda is, though it's slightly improved

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amoswap you're right that the distinction between compile time and runtime is unclear: https://t.co/Y7eFEb57gF

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CoreFloDev yes, it varies by type of hash and there's no way to know what kind of hash (or if they even store pw as plaintext!) any site is using

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@davidberneda this is an offline attack, the most common type, the database where the program stores all the password hashes is compromised, happens all the time, then the hackers have a copy of all the password hashes and can crack them at their leisure.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
it's under Exploit Protection, and you can disable it per-executable (look for the Program Settings tab in the screenshot). I would not recommend disabling this globally, but for a game executable it seems safe enough? https://t.co/axYPV6L2ms

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
normally I would file this under placebo effect, e.g. "RAM cleaning" but it's a lot of reports for a lot of games

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi well, at least the server message is useful. I don't know who greenlit "error codes" as a concept, especially in a 32-bit and 64-bit world..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nanochess your dad was just that cool 😎

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Nyadnar17 20 char limit is what I tend to see in the real world and it's SUPER annoying

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It's fun to play with the interactive password strength checker and see the massive difference adding that 12th character makes: https://t.co/gHx57ZBouB https://t.co/9lmwPnsWuJ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
12 chars has been the new realistic minimum password length for a while now... https://t.co/9o3wFJ09WD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@scalablecory yeah, I get it, there could be off brand PSUs that are lying. But the *measured reality* is that you will have serious trouble pulling more than 400w out of the Magnus One (3070 / 10700k) https://t.co/ZjtevpkqAd

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SwiftOnSecurity that's awesome and I had not seen it! Ironically, the current cooler design 3090/4090 is extremely efficient and quiet. The fan got slightly bigger in this iteration.. larger fans are generally quieter.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Ah, and you can play Goose Game as 2-player co-op now (I think this was added after launch?) .. great fun! https://t.co/CthbWoJIfZ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life a classic! https://t.co/deVJOvqxU0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@miniver Sure, it's definitely solid! This is 4k with everything set to highest quality: https://t.co/QPpFWhwFGn

@cpaik safeway grocery store bagger

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza @antumbral https://t.co/9H8grwtLj9 -- it's been 5 years and the gap is still 3x or more. That's real world perf, too, not synthetics.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate Yep. Been tracking this since 2015. https://t.co/ZWZdqlTqXY .. the short version is that Qualcomm is horrendous and Android is basically Wintel minus AMD. There's no viable competition.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Whoo boy this game has some serious performance issues. Locked to 30fps on latest consoles? I can see why; at "high" (not even very high or ultra!) it can barely maintain 4k/50fps on a high end PC with a super expensive video card!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielHoffmann_ well, for 4k, the 2080 wasn't quite enough, the 3080 is, so you could argue we're reaching the point of diminishing returns.. unless 8k becomes a thing. But DLSS and other fancy reconstruction techniques make that also kinda questionable.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielHoffmann_ There are pics of it fitting in the NR200P Max but *barely* .. which is why I went for a new, larger case.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
or.. not? https://t.co/YIENpQlcto

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@blturner it's a great case! But my feeling is the 3090 is at its absolute max in there. I could be wrong, but I'm a maniac for snipping fan grilles and maximizing airflow and it generates craaaaazy amounts of heat as is. Part of the problem is I have a 5950x in there too..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@blturner eh, I have quite a few fans in mine, optimized airflow, and based on the level of heat under load with the 3090 I'm not comfortable putting the 4090 in there.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I had to get a whole new case to use this monstrosity. It was tough getting a 3090 (not Ti) in a NR200P Max mini-itx case under load but that's well nigh impossible with the 4090 due to size and power. I hope the 4050,4060,4070,4080 are more reasonable

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi I bought every Surface Pro up to 8, but eventually gave up because Apple is so, *so* far ahead in hardware performance per watt that it's just getting .. honestly a bit comical.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevingibson92 Here's the wired version with 4000 samples. A lot less jitter as you'd expect, but that same odd first outlier. The program should throw it out! https://t.co/4MRiWFKr0f

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevingibson92 Yeah, you may be correct, that first sample is always super long. so 15ms vs 8ms, or about double.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevingibson92 it's 1000 samples, but let me try more samples.. this is 4000 https://t.co/aaw0DGLq0W

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@flaximus depends on the kid, ipad to chromebook is a giant perceptual shift! I usually go with the wirecutter recommendations on chromebooks, veering toward the higher end ones since they have nicer screens, etc.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
You're with Beleaguered Castle. Are you functional? https://t.co/M1FMHE5lpV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tuexss Also bad is pushing for 120hz (or more). Generating that many frames is SO much harder and so much more work.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Also, due to the x86 transition on consoles, we've made more progress in videogames than I've expected on utilizing 6-8 cores! Check it out: https://t.co/Dg2CBMBHel

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ErynnDBuck @OhNoItsAlexx anyways IMO we're doing better (gaming-wise) at using "m0ar c0res" than I expected we'd be by now but I also appreciate just how incredibly hard the problem is. There is no magic wand here, no magic bullet, multithreaded code is exponentially more complex and difficult than st.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ErynnDBuck @OhNoItsAlexx .. then they could cheat and just let the single threaded perf carry. And then on the Android side you have Qualcomm just absolutely crapping the bed, performance wise, with stunningly poor performance per core.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ErynnDBuck @OhNoItsAlexx I've actually been impressed that games have been able to use 4 cores somewhat reasonably well by now. Part of it is the PS4/XBone "lots of cores but kinda slow cores" architecture which forces you to parallelize. If they had really fast cores (say, they shipped Apple SoCs)..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ErynnDBuck @OhNoItsAlexx Spoiler alert: AI and self-driving cars are gonna take a lot longer than that, too. A *whole lot* longer. Hard things are hard, sometimes exponentially hard.
