@codinghorror
@hautepop @gabydvj @dirtxyz That's been our mission at @discourse since 2013! Fully open source, with strong, powerful moderation tooling.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And the astonishing idea that a phone can *take pictures!* https://t.co/hYd9J51ocP

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I think I must have made a data entry error when setting this up, but here’s today’s progress bar https://t.co/MTxuBmithW

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza that's an interesting question. My answer would be "being insincere or dishonest about what you give a shit about."

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please heh. I have a zombie google alert for my name that I set up probably 15 years ago and it still fires off at the weirdest and most random times

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@matt_clawson @VeryEvilAsh Try Detroit: Become Human next!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
SPOILERS ABOUND: but here are the 16 “main” endings in Detroit. https://t.co/cYOOnPnYRJ — there are YouTube compilations of 99+ variant endings as well. Shows the complexity of truly branching narrative!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Oh yeah delayed send as “edit” didn’t work for me :(

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Wow why subscribe? I tried Blue about 4-5 months ago and didn’t see anything worthwhile in it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JAdamsDev1 It’s like a decent but not amazing sci fi movie. I think it works well within the constraints it chose. Metacritic around 80% I believe?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@braindouche No I don’t think so. I am very much against walking sims like Gone Home, they don’t work for me

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It is a nice looking game and cleverly packaged; even the main menu "guide" android in the background has a bunch of special lines and a subplot. If you can tolerate a bit of walking simulator, it's recommendable. Also fun to see what percent of people made same choices.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi the most valid criticism is "too much, too fast". First order of business is to demonstrate a steady hand at the wheel. Remember when people rightfully complained that Twitter's CEO had a distracting second job? How many jobs does E.M. have now? 😵

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevemconstrux @discourse would Twitter (or any company) really want to provide low-level access to all public messages being sent for a third party to filter? https://t.co/vBDb9Nok9b

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
for example these Twitter ads from my feed, within minutes of each other.. all the charm of a vape store next to a tattoo parlor https://t.co/Kzxry0zrF2

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@seesharp @Anyware yeah AMD Is better for embedded GPUs, by far. That's why Steam Deck is so good, but it has a custom-ish SoC. The magic words you want are "RDNA 2" https://t.co/rEQ1VYuWvH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Wow, I had no idea the very, very bad 2012 Silent Hill remake pulled this off https://t.co/K4nk6BTBze

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 more desert bus eh?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanteShamest @discourse the attraction of "free as in free server time" is indeed a thing, but the focus on real time, video, screen share is kind of a different space.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@aidencoder @discourse oh it definitely works, however, it takes some effort.. even if the tooling makes it as easy as possible and automates as much as possible, there has to be a steady hand at the wheel, ideally several sets of hands

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevemconstrux @elon as someone who builds software that does this (@discourse) the article is a bit light on specifically *how* content gets "filtered" and the different classes of filter. And asking users to do all the work isn't exactly an easy sell.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Yes, the guy who behaves completely erratically time and time again, that's the guy I'd put all my trust in, naturally

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JacobianInSEA @Carnage4Life @zeynep @elonmusk yeah the original original argument was "some more regulation" versus "total wild west no rules at all" which I think is sane.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JacobianInSEA @Carnage4Life @zeynep @elonmusk isn't it also used in the other direction as well, to track down people who participated in Jan 6th, etc? This reminds me of the DNA databases. No matter how many "DNA databases are bad" thinkpieces are put out there, enough people will participate that it's happening, regardless

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @zeynep @elonmusk I thought @pinboard had a better argument talking about the bloat of the ad network infrastructure. That's really true.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente @jbogard So many missing here. Discord, for example.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zeynep @Carnage4Life @elonmusk it's a tradeoff; do I want to see random ads that have zero applicability to me and my interests? Or do I want to see ads that know about me and thus would be more interesting and useful? Consider the actual user experience.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek @DevinReimer yeah Elon is erratic as hell. If he can't see that himself, whoo boy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @zeynep @elonmusk you could argue that advertisers help keep platforms responsible, e.g. ethical advertisers will stop ads on a platform that advocates hate, thus pulling their primary funding

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@trentpshell @siracusa it was required for 2 games, Perfect Dark is arguable since "most of the game is inaccessible" without it.. https://t.co/6pA4feuTER

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa his memory tricks require the 4mb expansion though, which makes it a bit academic; almost no N64 games *required* the 4mb expansion

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MalwareTechBlog yep, check us out at https://t.co/7y4dRfl8uS -- 100% free open source software

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@semihfatihh yes, DLSS is great for that!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BigT383 @BuildItBusk @mojonojo3 this is easy to prove, there are a number of reviews where they TDP-limit the 4090 (I guess you can do this in software?) and it does exceptionally well in FPS per watt!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JacobianInSEA in Sackboy (PC) the video settings page *literally warns you* if you go over 120fps!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn That is a fair argument, twice the frames because two eyes / two perspectives, but 3D and VR.. urgh.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I counted while scrolling down and out of 13 tweets, 3 were ads. I don't necessarily mind ads, if they are for reasonable things but these are trending toward the internet chum bucket style https://t.co/CPta0mnovD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've warmed up to the idea that >60fps has benefits for serious gamers and 120fps is a reasonable ask.. but 240fps? really? https://t.co/7eXnwSqBDJ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SelfishMan I've had the muskiness blocked forever, that still works for me

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I suppose this was inevitable https://t.co/D25guvEz5x

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg right, and as I've noted before, same exact phenomenon in medicine / healthcare. I hope we can come up with solutions.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic Thank you! All credit to WASD. Seems quaint these days as there are soo many keyboards and switch choices compared to 2013!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this time he paired a suuuper low end PC (odroid H3+) with a GTX 4090. Fun to see how little CPU you can get away with in games! https://t.co/rcW3KMbt3D

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@scottwasson wow, that sent me down this deep, deep rabbit hole.. https://t.co/EsjC7tpDrN .. I have a 72 switch tester board now and I think we might be beyond the point of sensibility?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tenderlove also there's really no concept of "pc games" any more. All the consoles are pretty much stock AMD chipsets with embedded AMD GPUs .. then Fortnite went and killed console exclusives.. so there's just "x86 games", really.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tenderlove sure DM me, I have an extra one here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tenderlove oh yeah it's super flexible, you can do all kinds of things with it. I can send you one if you like! 🤗

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It's also the ultimate emulation handheld. It runs Switch games faster than the Switch! https://t.co/ZV3HiaoK1E

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @shannonrwatts Yep, and nobody is better equipped to make these clutch decisions than the Muskiness! 👑

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@VicVijayakumar Oh it's never been dead, I mean, people still buy Nickelback albums

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 @DiscoPriest that's akin to saying "chicken tastes like garbage!" .. too many people like it, can't be so. I can understand folks who don't like peanut butter avoiding it. I wonder how it does in Europe where peanut butter is not really a thing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic see, you shoulda bought Twitter

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jeffbax the Saturn? still? Really? I can't quite tell how good the Xbox 360 emulation is with Xenia, but a cursory look seems to indicate "much easier than PS3 emulation"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
also interesting, it's one of the rare places AVX, and specifically the latest AVX-512, is useful https://t.co/nXObgO7Mjt

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@realytcracker "not the ice again!" gets me every time

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"the first car fell like a rock" https://t.co/XON62dB3zf https://t.co/F2dTATxLFo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JacobEthanWhite Mostly agree, but I think Apple is doing AR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JamesBru @TristanIsham the phone apps you can use to connect to them are suuuper sketchy and barely work. So I wish they did!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ileff @Carnage4Life but none of that matters if the blue check is optional anyways, and devalued by "anyone can just buy it for a few bucks", so.. I dunno.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BrandonWatson @Carnage4Life not quite; the fan base *might* pay, but there's not enough of them.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life plus, once everyone has it (or can get it easily), then it loses whatever fake mystique it had in the first place?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 @DiscoPriest I've looked this up several times over the years and in the USA Reese's is always either *the* most popular or in the top 3 most popular candies nationwide, FYI.. feel free to google it and see!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kenlowery yes, that's because you are a man of exquisite taste, much like myself 🧐

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life It has to be skewed by the Elon fan base overrepresented in the voting; that's the only way this makes sense.. also asking someone what they would do vs. observing what they *actually* do..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @shannonrwatts yeah it's crazy not to grok the idea that having Stephen King on your platform is worth wayyy more to you than $20/month. However, you could make the same argument about T**mp 🤷

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life bad actors can afford $8/month but *if* you actually ban bad actors, that's $8 every time you create a new throwaway trolling account. Big if though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mattdarveniza Right, but if your pic doesn’t make it past the initial “will you swipe left or right” test, then you are doomed. In that sense it is always hot or not…

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is also a contender https://t.co/o8Qe3SFNq2 https://t.co/6WKnaWMmKV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi I'd just be happy if they closed that Roth loophole: https://t.co/4aqqVVQhUM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jeffr0 I played the original 1942 but not the game before that. One cool thing about BF1, it was a call back to their very VERY first game

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I dunno, I'd say ransomware would exist no matter what. Buying gift cards or whatever. It arguably made it easier?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi what else was behind glass? always interesting to see which parts are, and aren't..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Ca1ne aha, this is the exodus of talent. I didn't understand this tweet until now.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
yep, even after revisiting the beginning of 'season two' there is no magic in this game. It's, embarrassingly enough, among the worst entries -- if not the single worst entry -- in franchise history.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_C_King_123 @chx yeah that's the web these days

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx and notice their "different cores, same die" CPUs (13th gen) do very very well at Speedometer. Imagine that.. but really it's not surprising that all the innovation is on the mobile side (minus Qualcomm who just suck), that's where all the money is.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@igo1425 @Carnage4Life like imessage, signal, mainly

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@photomatt @thelightphone we kinda have; it's the Kindle

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles heads on pikes! https://t.co/fivGM648gS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek Far Cry 3 was so good, and 4 was a decent enough sequel, then 5 and 6 .. ugh (plus Primal and New Dawn!). It's like they actively made the games dumber, but better looking.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I have notifications globally disabled for all apps by default and rarely turn it off.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ZoidCTF Yeah OLED and HD (extra 2 bits ftw) are a stellar combo. Just an incredible visual experience. 🤩

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Guess which one is the OLED computer monitor https://t.co/fQU9Vif2Sp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx I suspect they do a better job of scheduling bursty work, and getting the clock speeds up high fast as needed. I remember Intel employees complaining in replies about this to my earlier Speedometer posts, years ago. Now they have drunk the "different cores, same die" kool-aid

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
run for yourself at https://t.co/Ily3kiXmQT
(turn off ad blockers etc before running)
latest Apple Watch scores 20 ⌚ and IMO "OK" performance begins at 50, "good" performance begins at 100. Everything after that is more or less gravy, but delicious, speedy, 120hz gravy 🏃♂️ https://t.co/dLHRC1xv1M

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Wraiyth yeah I have to wait for the PC release.. I'm just not a PS person. But I love that Sony is bringing their games to PC and I've bought and enjoyed them all! 👏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nfoonf @wilshipley it's quite magic and wizard-y, doesn't feel connected to our reality very much

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@isaacsousa @raymondedwards massive fps hits for ray tracing seems to be correct per this video (2060) https://t.co/HBorvCL9aV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lianmakesthings @bensauer The longer term answer is "both" because there are a small number of users who follow all the rules and just get on each others' nerves to an endless degree. But in general, yeah, you gotta boot the problem users stirring up 💩 constantly

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sethrh yeah 1080p is a super solved problem at this point, though if you want 144hz and 240hz and all that it gets weird again

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Definitely saw things along these lines with my kids during the pandemic. They are influenced by what they see online, especially during a pandemic when your only "peers" are online.. but that was likely more of a pandemic artifact than a generality

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@IBBoard hmm, no, I sit about two feet from a 48" display and the difference between 1440p and 2160p (4k) is quite stark to my eye.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
8k is pointless? https://t.co/vE3QITNMPW

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Getting closer.. https://t.co/LJeTXhThff
