The biggest recent event is the Samsung S95B, which everyone raves about. Apparently it is the first delivered batch of their next-gen display tech, and quite impressive? It was enough to convince me to upgrade. https://t.co/aUuVUC9rfR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Interesting to check stats for the LG C2 and measure how much OLED displays have improved from 2016 - 2022. Looks like overall brightness is the big one (e.g. the "OLEDs work best in a darker room").. about 1.6x better?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ShortTheFOMO oh yeah on delivered performance per watt Apple is absolutely destroying everyone out there, it's not even close. Heck, even on performance by itself they are knocking it out of the park.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dekkagaijin why? wasn't 2080 twice the speed of 1080? I have a hard time remembering which generations weren't at least 1.5x improvement

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"new GPU release day" has always been exciting (even going all the way back to 3dfx days) because the performance increases are so, so dramatic. For example, in Plague Tale: Requiem .. 2x frame rate! https://t.co/nDIX0HDkZV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NikhilVerma I never played Witcher 3 and now I get to play the remastered version which looks even better! https://t.co/Q0PvylRF5Q

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
new performance patch for the game, which was great, and a super detailed technical deep dive on its graphics by the always excellent @digitalfoundry https://t.co/6jK7RbceQr

@JasonDFW Ah, the Mr. Rogers strategery!

@codinghorror
@DamselflyPhotos So he deleted no tweets at all? It was an excellent and true theory though!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life oh it's absolutely true that free is a hell of a drug -- and not always a bad tradeoff. But it's also shocking to me how mainstream adblocking has become, and what percent of users run adblockers.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cgyrling @therealjonwebb @Naughty_Dog yep played through it with my son alternating places hotseat style, great experience! I especially enjoyed the expansion, which was like the complete opposite of Bechdel's Test..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@obiwantoby @cherylaimee @seesharp Wow it really does look exactly like that. Well done @cherylaimee

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg I wouldn't say "know how to run better", but "know examples of bad management when they see it", and they're right: https://t.co/pp8d1gI7IM -- after all, everyone has had a manager at some point, unless you were born very very rich.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cpaik The classic example: https://t.co/g88wHY6DZe

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @textfiles I can get behind some greyscale even 2 bits, but just one little ol' bit per pixel?! ouch

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout @Hanzo55 Yes exactly. I get that adding the open world was a good thing, so you can wander around and take on fights at your own pace, and that a lot of people *really* liked it (and prev games in this style). But I also feel it deserves a giant warning label for the average gamer!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ZaidJilani I think they should offer spots by lottery, completely at random, with some baseline (not extreme, let's say "very good" versus "outstanding") checks for academic rigor

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I personally can't wear sweaters or even undershirts, I get boiling hot. If I've ever owned a sweater it was by accident because someone gifted it to me.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cpaik interesting to contemplate what truly "decentralized" services, of any kind, have prospered and survived to date.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @langdon Lol his account is hidden now. He can't use Twitter any more either. Ironic?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life People don't consider Apple the bad guy here, and this is 100% on brand. It reminds me of when Apple went after AT&T and all the other cell network providers with the iPhone. "oh no, don't beat up the bullies!" https://t.co/5i5Yi9HOuS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamiequint It's more like "move randomly and break things" from.. well, everyone else's perspective https://t.co/pp8d1gI7IM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout @Hanzo55 And maybe it's just a From Software "thing" but I found the movement and controls to be so janky, like 1998 Tomb Raider. It wasn't satisfying moment to moment, even as a newbie.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamiequint conversely, if you are suddenly encountering a lot of resentful a-holes, maybe, just maybe, the problem isn't with them?

@codinghorror
@ID_AA_Carmack (taps at blog post date) https://t.co/inqDXmh4Sn .. I'd argue the two biggest mistakes in computer science are unrestricted pointer use and case sensitivity by default https://t.co/esoYyeh4NN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 @eviltrout oh god I *hated* Elden Ring. I feel like every review of that should come with a warning: this game is extremely difficult and may be frustrating. I can't imagine putting that game in front of someone new to games. They'd quit for *life*.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@marcin_kw different concepts in engineering vs show biz though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I initially brushed off these "AI upsampling" 🙄 things as marketing weasel speak sharpening upscaling filters, but there are lots of times where even in static screenshots you can barely tell the two apart... and the peformance uplift is *huge* 🤔 https://t.co/2OkIkT2sDt

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Here's 7950x/4090 MW2 4k ultra, with DLSS off and then with DLSS quality. This isn't DLSS 3 and I'm not sure it's even the latest 2.x version of DLSS (please correct me if you know). But you ~almost~ get 120fps minimum with it! https://t.co/TBqTS9QT4c

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Suhail @UnbroductMgr This is why Qualcomm is setting the entire industry back a decade.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@otter_eli If ps5 was sold at msrp it is great deal for what you get. Say the same for Xbox series X and steam deck!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Suhail Headwinds on Android / Qualcomm you mean? We’re a JS app and see massive perf increases each apple SoC gen, but Qualcomm is stuck at about 1/3 the perf

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Darn close to an overall doubling of performance by the 4090! 🤯 And balanced/basic/min product almost the same results! The name of the game is identifying which graphics settings, specifically, are responsible for the most performance drop w/ultra and tuning them

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The above ☝️ results were from 5950x / 3090. What happens when you switch to 7950x / 4090? Let's start with the four graphical presets at 4k: ultra, balanced, basic, minimum. https://t.co/zTAeuyk7bG

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RickWilliams84 well yeah, considering how powerful the A13 is, it could easily be an iPad with mouse and keyboard.. and iOS supports that stuff now!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
He seems to be a good natured guy, and I appreciate the lighthearted and generous tone of his videos, but.. where does this all end? How do you constantly one-up yourself? (two recent were giving iPhones out as halloween "candy", and last person touching a jet owns it"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cshirky I thought EM would do badly, but I must admit he has exceeded my expectations thus far

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg the point that "nobody really knows the actual value of stock, so it's difficult to tax it" is a fine one to make, and applies to everyone that holds stock, not just this one person

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
495 votes at time of writing. 1.4% of 495 is 7. I'd like to hear from these seven folks.. what did you think of this movie, and how did you hear about it?

@codinghorror
@derobins @Carnage4Life I remember asking a few years ago and most people said they used them to set timers, or when driving and needing hands-free.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisjohnson_nz @Carnage4Life how is it shut down? It's here in Windows 11. I guess it's not in the toolbar by default? Maybe this is the best explainer: https://t.co/wAw4iUYien

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley buy the framed version! https://t.co/LaJ0fiR2nR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg @maxdesalle @elonmusk I think it's much simpler than that; E.M. makes quite a few questionable bordering on trollish decisions and often doubles down on them after they are clearly mistakes. It's not good leadership.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life isn't Cortana pretty much the same? I never use it, and I run like ~12 machines with Windows in the house? Not disparaging MSFT here I genuinely think "voice assistants" are 99% useless no matter who is building them

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@beingapinetree @mmasnick @krmaher Perhaps it's aus/nz, but the UK dictionaries are showing it as impostor to me and that's how I've always seen it in traditional print. https://t.co/Y9Bt1oKTRy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@beingapinetree @mmasnick @krmaher "The term impostor phenomenon was introduced in an article published in 1978, titled "The Impostor Phenomenon in High Achieving Women: Dynamics and Therapeutic Intervention" by Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne A. Imes"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mmasnick @krmaher no one will be able to spell impostor correctly ever again https://t.co/xnTbqA5UUU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@merrittk Well, there's your problem right there.. as we all knew, PHP creates knife-wielding killers! https://t.co/qVFb9jkopx

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GordonMcGregor I'm impressed it works at all! But yeah Apple has the right idea long term, I checked and the fastest M2s are probably around the same gfx perf as the highest powered GPUs that can draw all power from the PCI slot with no additional connectors

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It will be interesting to see if anything changes with thunderbolt 4. Another quirk, due to the massive amount of bandwidth involved, is that the cable quality matters *a lot* and "I would not recommend over 1-1.5m"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
But there's no denying a 20-40% perf loss compared to a direct motherboard connection: https://t.co/BcpdbxISTZ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Thunderbolt 3 delivers a theoretical 40 Gbps. https://t.co/51FPBrHKXB

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonpurdy I watched Tenet recently. It was like someone came up with a genuinely cool sci-fi concept and hastily tried to prop up an entire movie around it with duct tape and foam

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stuinzuri @jasonpurdy well, I did watch it all. There are moments of OK-ness in later seasons but nothing like S1

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Cyanbane Yeah it's such an extreme nosedive that you wonder what happened, how were they able to make S1 so damn good and everything after that SO DAMN BAD?!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonpurdy Believe me, I wish they had picked a sensible direction and produced amazing seasons! But recommending anything beyond S2 (and S2 is a "keep your expectations low" recommendation at best) is .. cruel. Anyways, I am happy we had an amazing S1 and some character resolutions later

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonpurdy Rotten Tomatoes is more along my lines of thinking, though the minor critical bump for S4 is .. weird https://t.co/qIepsDYpbv

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonpurdy Here's metacritic for all seasons, in order.. sample size is a bit low for my tastes but S4 deserves a trashing https://t.co/c31WasIlaN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mattbillenstein Season 2 was OK-ish, but 3 and 4? unmitigated disasters

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulsabana @lexfridman I mean, I appreciate positivity and I think it is best to err on that side when you can, but all positive with no criticism isn't right either.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MrAlanCooper many videogames violate this rule, e.g. choose which "realm" you want to play in

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GroundedRaptor Sure; it's been reliable for us. Remember Discourse is largely JavaScript though, running in the browser.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lexfridman It's OK not to be relentlessly positive about every change, no matter how bizarre and questionable those changes are.

Jeff Atwood

It is possible to get stable guaranteed 120fps with balanced settings and “ultra performance” DLSS upscaling. Note the render resolution of 1360x720 though 🙃 .. anyways, full bore 120fps is expensive in every sense of the word. https://t.co/zUqi36NroM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Ultra settings are usually silly in terms of framerate cost vs. visual difference. So let's offset that silliness with DLSS! Here's Ultra with DLSS set to Quality mode https://t.co/YeFKwa1XnQ
