@codinghorror
@hennejg I tested that panel again holding it up myself using gravity to hold it down and I could NOT get it over 10w. It's just.. a bad panel apparently? At least much less efficient!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Today's tests. Smaller panels. The yellow extra-foldy one on the right can only muster a max of 6w, typical 4-5w no matter how I position it, the BigBlue "14w" panel on the left can do max 10w if I get it just right, typical 8-9w in practice. https://t.co/4UlXlhlBbU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@irae the risk is there, but overstated, check youtube for example test videos if you don't believe me. The OLED hardware subtly shifts the image around by a few pixels and also compensate for particular areas that never change.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@testthesoftware there's gonna be a special place in hell for you with that job though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dmitrybrant I wonder if they a/b test these? You'd think the smarter ones would.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mikaelne that's the goal.. all the $ will go to a worthy charity

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NickFausti @PeterZeihan @elonmusk @tim_cook because Cook acts like an adult CEO, and Musk acts like a toddler? https://t.co/pp8d1gI7IM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SK83RJOSH I dunno, there's a fanatical obsession with emulating Nintendo platforms, so it's only a matter of time until they get the kinks worked out. And WiiU games that are also Switch games (BoTW) are 100% playable at higher frame rates..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
(and yes I planted a bunch today, and will plant more!)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stuinzuri no, his misguided understanding of "free speech" rules that out

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Hmm, I have been informed that a coworker has more trees in their ecologi forest than me.. please help me (and the planet out here) by donating to plant more trees in *my* forest https://t.co/bsNkDUlj08

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@adamcnight yes; no new models are on the horizon for quite some time. Look how long the Nintendo Switch has been on the same model.. I expect the Steam Deck to have similar characteristics.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"the best 'one and done' handheld .. a modern marvel" https://t.co/rWPBixGIQj

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@testchamber1 why would he dislike that?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ptnik yes, I experimented with angles a bit here and it didn't increase or decrease output much; they are both "facing" the sun in their pictured orientation. And that tiny, tiny bottom shadow cannot explain the difference!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
some maths... 150w is 1960x550mm, 36w is 947x361mm. Thus the larger panel is 3.2 times the total area, but 8 × 3.2 = 24. Off by more than a factor of two. I think the larger panel has to have more efficient / better solar cells?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life they don't really understand crypto, it's kind of a "gadget" to them, hence the weird coverage. But then nobody really understands crypto, so..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gladpiano the touchpads, which I never ever ever use, the underside buttons.. do not include charger or case.. could be a bit smaller with slightly smaller screen ala the Switch Lite

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I bought another (cheap base model) Steam Deck just to keep around as a dedicated handheld emulation device. This will be my third Steam Deck, the second I gifted to @tenderlove 😘 .. get one for you or someone you love, it is amazing and doubly so for V1 https://t.co/osGOJr73Lq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slado sort of, except Apple's hardware is state of the art / relatively expensive and Nintendo's is.. meh / cheap. Their software is great though!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wdesmet SunPower X22-360, 28 panels, looks like $800 per panel is the current price? https://t.co/BHeFpOVqNz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wdesmet The average residential electricity rate in Alameda, CA is 23 ¢/kWh, which is 17% lower than the average electricity rate in California of 27.56 ¢/kWh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NartimHenriksen A classic!! Loved mine. But the tech has improved so much since then.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
One of the rare places where the fashion world and tech intersect. I think the "drop" of limited edition clothes was an established pattern in the fashion world for decades?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
and to be clear I like Drop! It's a great idea executed well. But in the same way that eBay kinda quietly switched to the "buy it now" option, the lede is getting buried.. for good reason.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
even https://t.co/lWaspyaPbF -- whose whole product idea was the 'drop' of artisanal batches -- has generally moved away from this model because it's *annoying as hell* for the consumer. EG you literally have to have your browser primed with credit card info preloaded at 1pm EST

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@seesharp where do you clamp it? I don't know anything about these

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jakerobinson I dunno, 3d printing *has* improved, for sure, but it is a far cry from a properly custom molded item. Maybe in 50 years? 100 years?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Nedrick_NA pff that sort of off-the-shelf stuff is for plebs 😏 .. what I really want is this but it sold out in like 5 seconds https://t.co/IPt9a9trtJ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@restlessmedia Well, season 2 is tolerable but just go in with low expectations. Do NOT attempt seasons 3 or 4. They are flat out unwatchable IMO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@donw @mhenderson_4 I *only* buy cartridges for the switch because there's no other way to share the games!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I do like it, but I had to bid for it on eBay like an animal instead of buying it via a typical online product cart checkout. So did the reviewers: https://t.co/FVd3VjYnuj

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@atmosfx cmon guys. Splatterhouse. That should be your obvious favorite!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek I got into artisanal small batch mice. I wish I was joking, but.. I'm not. https://t.co/x6Sc6ionrd and https://t.co/f9a2XGdnTz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jerkob yeah it's kinda sad to work on video games. Within about 5 years, nobody is touching your software (statistically speaking). A house no one lives in :(

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
big exception is Nintendo. 2017's Super Mario Odyssey is still $52 new, $30 used. That's another reason why the Steam Deck is a big deal. An enormous portable library of very inexpensive, often free, games. And not the "pay us $ every 6 hours" mobile type either. https://t.co/IPvg0krCl8

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rands you can do an ultrawide monitor; they work well for replacing dual monitor setups if you want "one thing" https://t.co/t6Zlvdhneo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AmericanAvat_ar @elonmusk OK, account with default avatar and creation date of November 2022, I'll definitely take that into consideration

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MafVosburgh If you *don't* wanna buy something, why would you make an offer for it?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MafVosburgh uh.. no? https://t.co/19QPwETYE9 says "On April 14, Musk made an unsolicited and non-binding offer to purchase the company for $43 billion, or $54.20 per share"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JourneymanGeek our solar company kinda bailed on me, so our setup is incomplete until 11/30. But they did say it can work with or without the battery, difference is (obviously) without the batteries all excess power is pumped back into the grid and not our own batteries.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@xin1337 @TimSweeneyEpic @StackOverflow you can be promoted to moderator position on Stack Overflow via periodic elections. Look it up. Nobody else does this, and we get no credit for it. But it'll be in the history books forever.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MafVosburgh Wait, didn't all this start with Musk offering to buy the company? Not like Twitter just rang his doorbell and said "you owe us $44 billion and now you own us"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
a good companion piece https://t.co/9VN3TEshHX

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@WorldWub fair; there are some good objective measures like net worth, though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For the record our home solar system has two Tesla Powerwall batteries (which haven't been delivered, and are months behind schedule) but I'm OK with that. They're inside, I'm not driving around a physical advertisement.. electric is a good thing. ⚡

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Another angle is "should we treat everyone exactly the same all the time?", aka "all lives matter" aka https://t.co/BdCgpPPkqW

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I find that this is a chasm many people still can't cross or wrap their minds around. A good reference: https://t.co/0SGJcBaUu4

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AmericanAvat_ar @elonmusk freedom of speech means freedom from the *government* censoring what you can say. Wal-Mart can (and will) absolutely boot you from the store for yelling expletives at the other customers at any time.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@churchofzues I wish; their hardware is too damn good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JohnONolan Yeah I don't want to judge too early, the real thing that matters is the product

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Still up for any teamwork! 🤝

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
https://t.co/54tmgzeeJO is the original AFAIK

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lucky_ruby @jstew1974 I’m just telling you what he said. I was surprised to hear it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Koriaxe @TimSweeneyEpic Mostly I was surprised to hear him say this!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@shreyas Check out @discourse -- fully open source, same stack as Mastodon.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley I think most do fine, we see more of the mistakes in the modern era as everything is visible to everyone all the time 24/7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@miguelatwork @StackOverflow If it has infinite answers, it's not really a question, but a discussion. You can look at the rest of Quora to see why allowing "everything" is a bad idea, e.g. "what did Jesus' farts smell like"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente nowheresville, withdrawing from life altogether

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MikeSinger @CaptainGrudin @elonmusk well, have fun in your bubble; the "public town square" ain't happening here, that's for sure

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Yep. Way too many excited firmware updates. Here is one for today https://t.co/XYaNGqtL0I

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've added "leaving soon" to my bio as I ramp things down.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dupays @CaseyNewton @pimjoosten Ah, I see you suffer from “shit’s easy syndrome”, a common malady..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_gb So far yes! Have not busted them out yet this year

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life The original has a lot of .. issues so there was some low hanging fruit there

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ronburk @Carnage4Life hmm, I've streamed files just fine off removable media in ChromeOS. Have you tried recently?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life It exists; it is chrome OS! I sings its praises often. Has gotten very very good.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Interestingly, @eviltrout mentioned to me "I'm setting up a mastodon server and the stack they arrived at is quite similar to Discourse - Rails, Sidekiq, Yarn for JS, pre/post migrations" .. we're of course 100% free open source forever, so everything belongs to you, not 🧐

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And if you have 500k or more followers and would like to launch your own community outside the increasingly unstable world of Twitter, we can host you for *free*: https://t.co/7y4dRfCbwS — just mention Jeff sent you. Now with fully integrated real time chat! 🗣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jbaert This is Dice's critical weakness. They are drawn to complexity like flies to honey. They CANNOT keep it simple, even when that'd literally be a better game, e.g. Bad Company 2

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I'm going to start slowly ramping down my activity here over time (quietly closes tab)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
well, maybe Season 3 will turn things around, but MW2 is *very* good so the overall prospects are dim: https://t.co/rxXNJ2dKAU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This.. still isn't where I would like it to be, but it's better.. ish. https://t.co/m9ruiyEVmM https://t.co/sYUuB6bBo3

@codinghorror
@arstechnica @kwiens noooo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@aallan yeah I have several and like them a lot.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This one from Anker, the PowerCore 24k 737, is also very good and costs less https://t.co/vxgURWGFGr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SparkyRobot @redqueen76 Yeah I worried a lot about doing permanent stuff to my eyes

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@maybebobparr @john_lam No, but the Sony models with the same panel tech will, I think?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Anyway, getting back to my original question: is 3D TV dead? Yes. Very very dead. "in 2021, IMAX announced that it would no longer show 3D movies." https://t.co/TROavq66Qz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@peterpham @paulg Dara Khosrowshahi comes to mind as a point of comparison. Or Satya Nadella. https://t.co/pp8d1gZaKM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg @peterpham They aren't rooting for him to fail so much as reacting to his actions under the lens of "is this what a responsible, experienced manager would plausibly do?" And from the start: is it a good idea to be active CEO of four other businesses?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Calibrating digital displays is so much easier today than it was in the analog days! That's right, VGA. https://t.co/d8ARoaksQ5 https://t.co/5n9Z2v7xir

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JohnONolan this is 100% a 15 second hot take but it looks *really* pretentious

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JohnONolan @adders This is true of all "embeds", and it is why @discourse mirrors hotlinked images by default.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@IanCutress @ShortTheFOMO I've seen a number of test results with the 4090 where if you intentionally reduce resolution and frame rate, it does produce better performance per watt than older cards.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic oh man this is a fun rabbit hole. I owned many of these oddball coolers, like the Zalman al/cu https://t.co/oGy3iUSi5G

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic and heatsinkless! https://t.co/zBl7sWZc2F

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa Yeah this isn't our primary TV so I went with the more rationally priced one. The primary TV, I am splurging a bit, I want to go as close to 100" as I can by the end of the year. That is already in motion.. it goes in my office so it gets spousal approval by default ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@john_lam yes! I got mine from Amazon. I paid like $3500 for that 55" OLED back in 2016.. I figured the price/performance had finally hit something approaching reasonable? It's so much better now of course.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic They are getting into serious heatsink engineering territory here to the power draw rising so much over time though. Remember when most GPUs were 2 slot? 1 slot? 1 slot with no extra power connectors? 🤯 Now it's 3 slot given, and some push 4.
