Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GRMule Well yeah but that’s a different proposition. “People will screw up implementations of software” is a given

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zorendk They are so out of touch with reality. In some ways this can make you a good CEO (let’s try the impossible!) but then they have some minor successes and it goes to their head and they consider themselves always-right geniuses

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@roelandsch More realistic is that videos already dominate search results, at least for me. It's annoying. They are on topic, correct matches, but they are videos.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Ryanb58 limited to tech stuff, sorry

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
M A X I M U M

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gastrognome @clairelizzie Also I have to recommend this GENIUS product / company: a professional interviewer will capture a family story for you and package it up. Utter genius. https://t.co/i3vRoeAWW3

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@OffBeatMammal Intel is the key word here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@roelandsch not my lived experience at all, and I search with Google 10 times a day

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@alfaj0r oh, video results DOMINATE google these days. Just total and utter domination. Obliterated.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bootrino I was *technically* wrong about netbooks, but in the end, chromebooks had the same (even better, arguably) effect

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NooShoes the video format is more defensible for the fun stuff that belongs on video, like the one where they bought that dangerously powerful "CPU cooling" fan.. that was great.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NooShoes Linus is pretty cool. I like him. But I don't want to watch an entire 11 minute video (with sponsor breaks) instead of reading a webpage where I could absorb the entire set of material in 2 minutes. There's also no adblock for in-video-ads, for the record..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@realnzall Let me clue you in to a little secret https://t.co/eaiOTcqUpA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I'm so tired of predicting the future. just so so tired of it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For those of you on Windows laptops who want the TL;DR, it is this. Typical modern web. You can watch an 11 minute influencer video (SMASH THAT BELL TO SUBSCRIBE!) to get the answer, or spend 60 seconds reading a webpage to get the very same answer. 🙄 https://t.co/NQEbfT0drQ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life it was comically over-PM-ed! That video showing how many times they used the word "television" in a world where .. good lord.. do kids even *watch* "television" these days?!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Once Apple switched to their mobile SoCs it was game over for MS/Intel/AMD anyway. https://t.co/e2IMqgGMiz

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I cannot, CANNOT get over just how bad the Xbox One launch was. It's a business case study in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Xbox 360 was so fantastic, they had the whole videogame within their grasp and then.. holy crap was the Xbone PM-ed to the hilt disaster.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@abdellahjs @jasonfried @photomatt @SahilBloom @JeffBezos surely it could have been handled in a way that a) didn't result in 1/3 of the company quitting and b) was not front page news in the NY Times. But what do I know, I don't have two best selling books on how to run a company.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonfried @photomatt @SahilBloom @JeffBezos I wonder though, would one or two additional meetings have avoided this situation? https://t.co/5tK4bBM2av

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bewing03 I do NOT recommend solo DMZ mode, unless you are very hardcore. Duos at minimum. Note that with local voice you can hear a squad and ask to join them, and hold down alt (on pc) to send or ack a request to squad up. Squads can be 6 or apparently more (!) people in DMZ.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MaxHoberman @MintBlitz as an aside, this is why I like 32v32, 64v64, and ideally 128v128, and dislike very small matches. With that number of players you statistically always get "enough" great / decent / terrible players on each team.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MaxHoberman @MintBlitz fun for who, exactly? the handful of streamers who need to show off their ability to be LeBron James pitted against a high school basketball team, or .. *literally everyone else*? I think some level of basic ELO or fairness is required in matchmaking, everywhere.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn I literally don't know *how* to force a crash; that'd be quite difficult. ALT+F4 obviously but that does not produce a crash dialog.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"you have been disconnected from steam".. now my weapon is on 2 hour cooldown. If you *know* the game crashed, why not comp players? https://t.co/HI0oRxDhHq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@smbarbour ex-fucking-actly! 😁

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
To be fair they did ask "how satisfied are you with these 23andme polls" this time; I said "very dissatisfied" and pointed them to these tweets. They proceed to ask the following 👇 https://t.co/lILjnwgMrc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Urgh. Crashes are happening way too often in Modern Warfare 2, and you lose all your mission items when it happens. This is after multiple video card driver and game driver updates. I wish they'd at least comp you with some mission stuff since they *know* the game crashed! https://t.co/h1uMuGqgD5

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@soviut Yeah but none that would power like this; see the above comparison to the kikkerland ones that don’t move at all in the same light!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mueller_andi @markmalstrom it's the only browser extension I use, so this checks out 🔫

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ammarmalik1 well, my Surface Duo is a snapdragon 845 / Android 12 and it's so laggy in use compared to my iphone, even for simple stuff like GMail. I guess you get used to 120hz snappy performance, kinda like you get used to high speed internet vs. dialup

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It is literally *cloudy and raining* today and this little solar device is somehow still drawing enough power to work. How?!?! Solar Twitter help me understand why this one is so efficient! https://t.co/ev16aguinR

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@markmalstrom basically coders gonna code, meaning, most code is bad code. Use as little code as possible. Don't install extensions unless it is at gunpoint.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@markmalstrom very many extremly poorly written extensions with n+1 perf characteristics, e.g. they loop through every HTML element on the page multiple times, etc.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate Feel free to email or call me if you want more 'cause I can go all day and all night on this topic. Not even joking.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate Whereas Apple is pushing a *great* browser on *amazing* hardware. You want me to complain about that? Hell to the no, my brother. I'm sorry.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate Qualcomm has, quite literally, set the mobile computing world back by a full decade.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate The real thing you need to be yelling about is how Qualcomm has a headlock on the Android ecosystem and they .. absolutely f-ing suck. There is ZERO choice. Walk into any store and just try to buy an Android "runs on any hardware" device not using terrible Qualcomm SoCs.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate 🤷I think Apple is most in its element doing walled gardens; they've always done it first and best and I don't think it's smart to stray from your core competencies as a company: https://t.co/oUXDb37Ou7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate as you noted, was already running on Windows. Using Speedometer 2.1, Chrome is "only" 1.4x faster versus 1.5x faster under 2.0. So that is some minor good news for FF users! I'll include some more exciting obviously Windows screenshots for you 🤣 https://t.co/UQaRZwvWiN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate I'm disinclined to do that because Safari and Firefox are the only other engines left. Apple needs to promote Safari or they'll kill it off in favor of "just use Chromium" like Microsoft did, IMO.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lordthundering 71 is actually a good score for Android, believe it or not. Best you can do is around 110 or so AFAIK and that's very VERY latest Qualcomm dreck

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@markmalstrom gotta be plugins. try in incognito.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I wasn't aware there was a newer Speedometer *2.1*, thanks to @slightlylate for pointing that out, here's the results on 2.1 for Chrome/Firefox.. still quite a disparity https://t.co/Im9EfU0HEs https://t.co/HC5zJnUqrn

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stroll_taker "Thanks, Qualcomm!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@slightlylate Oh nice I wasn't even aware 2.1 was out! Thank you!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eghenry no, but it probably drained the battery noticeably a percent at least.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ammarmalik1 on a watch not too many place. On the web? everywhere. Javascript is *EVERYWHERE*, all the time.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LukasGrossar welcome to the world of Qualcomm. Enjoy your stay! 😭

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chucker for watches they are (obviously IMO) optimizing for battery life over perf. Watch battery life is decent but not great, even now, 8 generations in.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz well, I hear you, but I don't think that particular genie is going back into that particular bottle anytime soon. And I also think it's fucking awesome to have an A13 inside your display. That thing just RIPS.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz I mean, honestly, does anyone really want to be sitting here optimizing 8088 code to within an inch of its life for 3 decades? Outside of the demoscene, I mean, but that's performance art. https://t.co/KoJ1pF5YjY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz it doesn't *need* to be, but "ridiculous performance for free and absolutely no reason whatsoever" is kinda the whole point of computing to date. Then we figure out cool things to do with it. Otherwise we're back in "640kb should be enough for anyone" land. 🤷

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SnarkyPixel_ any programmer will tell you that programming is ALL edge cases. That's the entire job.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@elmuertecom Meh, even stupid ps5/Xbox X consoles have 16 Gb ram these days; why not USE it?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Tested myself just now and yep, Apple Watch ultra bringing the heat at 22 https://t.co/QFYeiHIPaa

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@capnrotbart Agree; the latest Apple TVs are on crazy fast A15 (iPhone 13) silicon! Apple only *makes* crazy fast silicon since around 2016 onward.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GuillaumeCr I can barely remember the last time I had a Chrome crash. Do you run a lot of plugins/extensions? I only run ublock.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bvandewa yeah I'm mostly concerned with qualcomm who can barely break 100 even today with their most expensive SoCs. They are way way behind and setting everyone back a decade. Intel and AMD got the memo and have caught up. Qualcomm NOT SO MUCH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TommyAndersen82 @RaphaelsHat {{citation needed}}

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
(cue "640kb is enough memory for anyone" replies in 3..2..1..)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@prahladyeri @Carnage4Life So far it .. isn't working. At least not by ad revenue. Would you want to advertise at a company where the CEO delights in humiliating and denigrating others? I mean, for a responsible, clearheaded CEO that makes sense, but this ain't that. https://t.co/pp8d1gI7IM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RhysRhaven Fair, inefficency is built into democracy for checks & balances reasons but it's a wild stretch to say democracy = web browser

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mark_philpot Brave is also good; anything Chrome based will do very well.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Not that surprising if you know that Qualcomm's very very best and most expensive SoCs can barely score 100 on speedometer. Have I mentioned that Qualcomm sucks and has basically singlehandedly set the entire mobile ecosystem back a decade in performance? Great work QC! 👍

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
My new personal web perf minimum "is it faster than an Apple watch". Note that this is a series 5; newer watches are 20% faster so around ~20. On the right is a Samsung S95B OLED "smart TV". Also, you'd be surprised how many Android devices can't clear the very very low bar of 20 https://t.co/5tETbFicsp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@StevenIrby 7950x. Intel and AMD have improved greatly on the "bursty" performance that JS requires and Apple was totally kicking their ass at for the last ~8 years.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@StevenIrby @Ak_Mittal No extensions, my FF is totally vanilla, I barely use it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@harsh_vardhhan Possibly, but these are the market realities!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@devioustree @siracusa But if we are *not* interested in helping others, sure, use the weird, overly verbose, highly-specific-to-one-language methods. Or you could learn the stuff that is a) the same in every language and b) universally applicable everywhere. To me that's a no brainer. But you do you.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RaphaelsHat you can do plugins on Chrome to have the best of both worlds. Or use Brave! It's Chrome based.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Elon wants to be the main character every day, which is a clear sign of egomania. Does *anyone* think that a good characteristic for a CEO?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've been amazed how good MW2:DMZ is for actual fun teamwork, which is the meat of the game to me! https://t.co/a84ZIGYZjb

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TedDennison well, it's when you get into protected, underepresented, historically persecuted classes of adults that it becomes more nuanced.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Forge64 @xin1337 @TimSweeneyEpic @StackOverflow Thank you! Sense of humor is an essential life skill. 🙇

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ohho @miguelatwork @StackOverflow it does become difficult as the number of questions goes higher and higher, and I acknowledge that here, have a read https://t.co/QpiBf8mipE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kylembrandt @miguelatwork @StackOverflow great if you want reddit style amusement, but terrible at literally everything else. Hell of a tradeoff.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@miguelatwork @StackOverflow but it does prevent actual experts from participating and learning anything on the site, and once you alienate the experts.. uh.. good luck with all that. This is why SO sold for 1.9bln and Quora is just.. limping along doing whatever random crap they are doing.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mhenderson_4 @donw eventually physical media will go away long term, yes. It is inevitable. But for now we have switch carts and 4k blu-rays.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryanlanciaux @Carnage4Life 100% yes. I barely understand it and I've used it to buy things. Which SUUUUCKED by the way. Arguably one o the worst end user experiences I've ever had, bar none.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@devioustree @siracusa In the long run not learning SQL and regex are huge, HUGE mistakes. Massive. That's what I'm worried about. Take your career in the proper direction.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TimSweeneyEpic remember the web? I do. That's the place where you get to keep all the money you make. https://t.co/RZqyhzKCL8

@NickFausti @PeterZeihan @elonmusk @tim_cook @TimSweeneyEpic wake me up when you never buy any products made in China again. I'll be waiting over here; keep me updated with your results.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ilhannegis I'd check youtube for those kinds of shenanigans

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
oh wow! As pointed out in the comments, people who can see the spelling errors are people they actively don't want clicking the links! They are optimizing for the clueless! Wow. Never woulda guessed. https://t.co/nDbRsasQL1

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mpauldaniels yeah I've done that too, in an incognito browser window. The URLs are so wrong and the critical tell; I hope browser / companies understand that seeing the URL and vetting the URL is critical.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ca_heckler @ptnik Nope. Tested again today, holding it up letting gravity pull it down and could not get it over 10w no matter what I did. It's just not as efficient as the others, maybe due to the actual panels?
