Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@vgdunkey You're the MOST REALEST GAMER OF ALL TIME

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@matt_clawson @ShawnHymel I had that one too!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MissQuickstep @scalablecory you need human ECC! :)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hughpyle @jensenharris yeah, it often takes ~2 seconds to respond on very high end hardware!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MissQuickstep @scalablecory no worries, happens a fair bit despite both words having radically different meanings, but I had a laugh at the idea of building my own servers to run Discord on ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MissQuickstep @scalablecory Small correction, nobody runs Discord except Discord, it's proprietary closed source ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Their latest data is encouraging. ECC registered is impressive. https://t.co/PAcA70s52S https://t.co/2cvNTbKtbD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Per the Puget Systems data, assuming we ship 1000 computers, all using regular RAM, 10 of those will have memory failures. Using ECC, only 4 would.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
in a perfect world all memory would be ECC, and maybe one day we'll get there.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tommygeorge that's the underlyhing secret of UNIX taking over the world, too, IMO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@brentcrawford @simplicio823 tons of variables here including cost of energy, how often it is used (door is open), ambient temps etc. 480kWh/year is an excellent number especially for 2001!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Maybe I was a bit off. It looks like you *could* nearly halve yearly energy use and still have 20 cubic feet of space: https://t.co/yaSpGujEff

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cossssmin @WBRST yes, I suspect normal = large is the way of things here in the USA..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@WBRST can you provide a link? They must be quite small in volume

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@globalo yeah, it looks like we hit the limit of efficiency around 2001.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Quemandoacromo difficulty for difficulty's sake.. urgh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I checked a few "most efficient refrigerator" pages and it looks like around 600 kWh/year (roughly where the rightmost line is on the above graph) is still where we are. Only a "small" (10 cubic feet) fridge can do 300 kWh/year

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amywebb errrr the enormous amount of pain, both physical and psychic, being inflicted on everyone is a pretty good sign that we are in an era of great transformation. We got spoiled after WW2 and the 60s.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@coreyh Have only tested one thing so far, but as you can see in the pic it is slightly different

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Double display power! https://t.co/CrK1G8Rxdg

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And, for older kids, "A Way Out". These kinds of exclusively designed for co-op games, when executed well, are so satisfying to play. https://t.co/k4b4TYdjuK

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Another two-player designed game we enjoyed a lot was Unravel 2. https://t.co/RqjyMqgul9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@matt_clawson wait you can clean a TV with a water hose?!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @chickrnlittle If you're gonna make it hard, make it hard *like this* https://t.co/nA0OL5Ljt9 not "you did not intuit the one-hit kill animation correctly"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @chickrnlittle "For PvE, I'd have to say the Dark Souls series. Even though their controls are not fluid, or graceful." hard agree. Not fluid or graceful in the least. And nonsensical, hacking away at the feet of enormous building sized creatures. Absurd.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @chickrnlittle Now that one was at least interesting, because it was fully physics based! Elden Ring feels more like the first Tomb Raider in terms of mechanics. For melee I think it can be done a heck of a lot better than whatever ER is doing. https://t.co/8PAarArQXH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@metsfan I wondered about that. Would anyone want to play Madden 2007 instead of Madden 2008 or Madden 2009.. or Madden 2012? Or FIFAs? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Dreamcast/Saturn/PS1/Gamecube had 2361 games released in the US. 680mb per CD, let's guesstimate the avg game was ~400mb? 2361x400 is ~1TB... but how many of those games would any rational person want to play *today*? https://t.co/GysLkLrQ9l

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Esqarrouth Then we should do away with review systems completely, because per metacritic, this game has "universal acclaim" and is the #1 game of 2022. https://t.co/Dctcgq1nlc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ArcJuve yes! Great game, and unlike Rogue Legacy, it is played top-down so it's a lot more fun. I just can't get into 2D platforming games.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@andrewingram @siziyman at least it is open world so you can level up and go wherever you like, versus the (apparently?) linear setup of their other games. This feels more like Zelda: BOTW for masochists.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@harmless_exe which is fine, but the reviewers need to indicate this

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza yeah I'm trying to reconcile the universal critical 10/10 acclaim with the actual lived experience. Maybe there's something to this whole "what's wrong with game journalism" discussion? I mean, I get that not everyone likes every type of game, but this was 10/10 *EVERYWHERE*

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Part of the Deck appeal is the 🐘 missing Switch successor.. the Switch was never particularly fast hardware even at its 2017 launch; recent "big" game ports (Witcher 3, Doom, etc) sometimes go all the way down to 360p in res..🤣 https://t.co/5OWjnE9xiK https://t.co/f1Mj5myD0d

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Esqarrouth per metacritic everyone *should* love it, at least on the critic side. Shows the power of user reviews vs. critical reviews.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NineCorrupted the vast difficulty spikes & constant cheap one-hit kills have never been patched out to my knowledge; if some people like that, that's great, more power to 'em. Not my idea of fun though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Dunkey, as usual, nails it. https://t.co/RKdEZkap1N

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@andrewingram to me it felt very much like the first Tomb Raider game, quite primitive, where you could move / attack in prescribed ways at prescribed times. I guess I can add "souls-like" to my list of stuff I won't like.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I guess this is a case where you should favor the user reviews over the critic reviews https://t.co/CwAEhlx3cJ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Don_Meltz says 1927 on the plates

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ChrisTotty @runclepennybags well, he has a point about Steam being big enough to dictate custom hardware (the Deck SoC is much better, GPU-wise, than all the off the shelf stuff) and sell it at cost or at a loss to make it up in later steam game sales.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@captain_kuro Right but Steam could, because they already did. The deck is IMO overbuilt; I see many things that could be cut to lower costs.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Navarr cheapest games? Mario Odyssey came out in 2017 or whatever and is currently $51 on Amazon. FIFTY ONE DOLLARS. Same with all their other high tier games. Plus the indie stuff is more expensive there. Online play costs recurring yearly $ on Switch.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the above device at $299 or even $249 would sell millions of units, easy. And it would flip the script on the Nintendo "make the hardware cheap but keep the games and online perpetually expensive" formula.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ChrisTotty yeah there's a fair bit of subtlety to it. I'm sure "madden 2003" sold tons at the time, but do we really want to play it today?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"The purpose of the detailed research studies is to determine what is required to keep a space flight crew happy and healthy during an extended mission to Mars and while living on Mars." https://t.co/ROFRfRzZs9

Jeff Atwood

"I want to build a reasonable 'best of / greatest hits' list for all the possible platforms, but I’m not sure how to do it." https://t.co/kTEiq8s5z9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jonobacon related https://t.co/22yykt9Fd9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@carolina_pz @AmyBlankenship yeah that part was very unfortunate :( .. "mansplaining" is a kind of scolding IMO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AmyBlankenship true; ironically in the podcast the specific person was a woman, but I do agree with you

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And if you aren't familiar with the behavior, here's a good overview. Don't do this, folks! People *will* hate you! https://t.co/yIG3Qoi8ry

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_hmck @restlessmedia I think this was mentioned in the podcast, actually

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dustinboswell various things, but the specific example in the podcast I remember was scolding people for choosing junk food in their special request packets they could get very infrequently.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Still looking for a well "organized" 512gb or 256gb SD card image for Android based emulation ala the Ayn Odin. Feel free to email me, jatwood at codinghorror dot com https://t.co/fXYgavZcOh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
annnnd the answer is...
the scold. Oh my god the rage directed at this person was universal and had the fire of a thousand suns.. from everyone 🔥
apparently if you're trapped in a small room with humans for a long period of time, the scold generates maximum discord

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@charlesengelke I'll provide the answer in a bit

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is the 2018 podcast I'm referencing https://t.co/EEP0J1zQ41

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I don’t know that I want to clear this again, but it was with a super oddball set of boons. I think the Aphrodite call made the most difference https://t.co/eKFFVoylT4

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've been getting these "clearly not for me, in another person's name" eventbrite emails for months now. I've been forwarding them to someone helpful at Eventbrite, but.. months?? How many other people is this happening to? https://t.co/PhiAbIPv6V

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"we have found that 40Hz tends to be a sweet spot for responsiveness, consistency, and smoothness"
https://t.co/o7ptZOeKIb
https://t.co/o7ptZOeKIb

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DylanJosh Even the tier higher does not cut it for 4K raytracing. Maybe the 4080/4090 will

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@susanthesquark @MLarson84 True a blu ray player is by definition a bit of a pc. I hadn’t thought about it that way

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielOCnr And one system has 32gb the other 64gb

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielOCnr One card has 8gb ram the other has 24gb, so 1.5x more

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I did like it in Control but I had to play at 1440p to get reasonable frame rates. Depends on the game I guess, and whether raytracing is a gimmick or an integrated part of the visual design

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And here is 4K on a 3090 with a faster cpu, the same very high settings but raytracing turned on at high (not very high) levels.. noticeably chonkier, not enough to offset the imo modest visual improvement https://t.co/DLdfAYA9zx

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @DavidZipper @jonrog1 keyboard screen was inevitable. For cars, there's a middle ground with big screen plus a few select buttons that people inexplicably ignore, maybe because Tesla goes so hard in the all-screen direction.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stuartpb not that particular game, I was using it as an example of what you *can* play, e.g. it's a portable PS4. https://t.co/g1fkHyKW3i

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@susanthesquark @MLarson84 wait what? blu-ray players are all backwards compat with dvds (and cds) by definition, nobody should be buying a "dvd player" these days!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RidinDaWooTrain nah, I mean a more introspective "changes the way you view the world" type of thing. Those movies you mentioned are great in a different dimension.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For example https://t.co/rw1lkltCOE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"From 1937 to 1998, church membership remained relatively constant, hovering at about 70 percent. Then something happened. Over the past two decades, that number has dropped to less than 50 percent, the sharpest recorded decline in American history." https://t.co/jkTyp57f3b

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stuartpb I'm playing this game on a lightly modded Zotac Magnus One with 3070, so we get 4k native all high settings no fancy tricks required 😏 https://t.co/eGA3raUjDY (I do avoid raytracing though, it's sooo expensive at 4k)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ID_AA_Carmack @natfriedman @danielgross @patrickc @tobi @sequoia @CapitalFactory Love the name, good luck out there! https://t.co/ZH57rPC4Ck

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I am such a sucker for this kind of stuff. A cable with a built in OLED display! 😍 https://t.co/eupOMn29oF

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielHoffmann_ I'm.. not a fan. https://t.co/0AATkfxxdq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've never been in the "you *need* 120fps to be a real competitive gamer" camp 🙄 but giving up 60fps is a bit harder. I need to see if 40fps is enough of a sweet spot..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@v2Dark @Dan43349536 there is something there, but people vastly underestimate how long it's going to take to get there. Sort of like "AI will become sentient soon!" and "we'll have fully self-driving cars soon!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CaseyFoxtrot if you want 60fps with the best possible visuals on brand new AAA games, then I'd avoid Steam Deck. But for older games, which are still great and look great? It's amazing. Like Titanfall 2 for example. It really is a little PS4.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@v2Dark @Dan43349536 We are still in the Apple Newton era. So far from iPhone. And it’ll take more than 15 years to invent the “project directly into the eye” needed for VR to truly work. It is beyond doomed, it is 3D television level of doomed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CodaAnthony1 My understanding is that was more about preventing rootkit/kernel malware installations on Windows, and I agree with that concern.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For example, Spider-Man on Steam Deck! https://t.co/4UsdZu8rBC https://t.co/ZiX53kTq3f

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the optional raytracing seems to be a factor, plus "the extra cost on PC of decompressing assets from storage into memory by using the CPU" 🤔 .. he saw a peak of 500mb/sec while flinging around the city (which is super fun btw)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Alex found the game CPU limited on his Ryzen 5 3600! Check this out, 70fps vs 128fps with same settings: https://t.co/owTlhfIZk7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I've read that the latest consoles are roughly equivalent to the RTX 2060 (or 5700XT) paired with a Ryzen 3700; the video seems to bear that out. https://t.co/ECqpPqwVJl

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Imagine a voxel-based Superman game where everything was destructible, with physics 🤤

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dholth @EdCampion ah yeah I forgot it did, I like the Anker GaN ones though, with the flip-down prongs and compact design.. I'm spoiled :)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I mean, 4chan turned out great?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@has_many_books websites absolutely have sequels. Facebook is the sequel to Myspace, for example, and TikTok is shaping up to be the sequel to Facebook..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie IMO, wildly overrated. The quality of the individual ingredients just.. isn't there. It's like the fries at in-and-out

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@optshiftk @ID_AA_Carmack Yeah you gotta clarify if you're talking about the electric ones here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn when playing a AAA modern game it will be.. google says Nomad gave 2-3 hours on 6 AA batteries!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@EdCampion @dholth you need a 30w+ charger for that. I've seen devices like this, even chromebooks, draw up to 60w, so pay attention to the watt/amp rating on your charger! I like the Anker GaN ones.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@optilude Apple has the best hardware by far, no question there, but they have come down super hard against streaming games, plus their position on games in general has always been kinda weak.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@digitaldeity that's the whole point, a PS4 you can hold in your hands and take with you on the go.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Dan43349536 I disagree. VR is a huge pain in the butt, expensive, takes up a ton of room, difficult to set up, causes nausea, the list goes on and on and on .. https://t.co/0AATkfxxdq
