Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@specwill @samabuelsamid @ID_AA_Carmack if you can pay for it and receive the service, is how I personally judge it?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@benedictevans @ID_AA_Carmack L5 in at least one major US city is how it should read, to me. That's enough.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza @JosephHill Here's to more monkey business! 🙈🙉🙊🐵🐒

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa does it work on Apple TV? That's the context

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This one in particular is soooo strange to my eye. But yeah. It’s a video. https://t.co/o4Kn9g67vT

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@scunliffe as I mentioned before, if we have 99% self-driving I'm not going to rules-lawyer myself a win. If the only blocker is legal, that still counts as a win for @ID_AA_Carmack

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@susanthesquark @MaryLynnRajskub yeah @betsyphd and I started this last night and it's amazing so far. The casting alone is (chef's kiss)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ID_AA_Carmack @ChrisGr93091552 we could possibly classify "someone suddenly runs into the street waving their arms frantically" as an emergency. If we have 99% success, I'm not eager to rules-lawyer myself into winning..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisbrandow It's from https://t.co/SdTUgQJXf1 -- I should have cited it apologies!

@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PragmaticAndy @allenholub @abnyn1 @yegor256 @apaipi @gregyoung @Pim_de_Morree thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've also emailed and politely requested that the podcast I was in be removed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
after one month, I've cancelled Twitter Blue. I don't see enough (or.. any.. honestly?) reasons to pay for that. If it was ad-free I'd do it in a heartbeat though!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg @JohnDCook but then you have to deal with all the employees!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mladenny Sorry for the "boomer screenshot" 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sietcetera maybe? I'd need to google it but it looks probable

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@vyedin @IlvesToomas lots of different hardware but mooooostly Qualcomm in practice, sadly 😭

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lexfridman it certainly beats the alternatives

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 widescreen makes some things kinda inevitable over time; it is the opposite of mobile which is tallscreen tho

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@heartpunkk @cherthedev anyway, I'm *not* a fan of whiteboard programming, but I don't consider FizzBuzz whiteboard programming. I consider it showing them a truck cab and asking "can you kindly show me the steering wheel and pedals?"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
If you're looking for places to send money / effort to help Ukraine, the former organizer of Fwdays, someone I met and trust, mailed me this link: https://t.co/o2qWhkENct

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life if you watch the (very, VERY boring) recent Zuckerberg interview with Lex Fridman, Zuck specifically says that from 2015 onward, GPUs/AI made it possible to implement some form of basic automated moderation at scale. So there is "vetting", but it depends on a lot of variables..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong it does, but only via texts

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@heartpunkk @cherthedev what's amazing is that PEOPLE FAIL THIS CHECK. That still, to this day, blows my mind. They come in for a truck driving interview and cannot tell you where the steering wheel is, or where the brake pedal is.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@heartpunkk @cherthedev that's not a test, that's more like "ok, you want to drive a truck. Can you show me where the steering wheel and brake pedal are?". I'm *NOT* a fan of whiteboard programming tests.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
here's the Apple //c unboxing experience 🤩 https://t.co/zC58c3PK8K

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joeherbers Our //c had the serial port bug! Stuff came through garbled until we got the mainboard replaced as I recall...

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
oddly enough no built in *disk* diagnostic in Chrome OS (yet), which seems like a missing piece

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@yellow_hand1 to clarify, it should have added "interference" to the end of that quote block. The people, we have no problem with!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life basically this: https://t.co/r1FkHb6Efd

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life this one I actually support. Crypto is supposed to be immune to all outside influence, at least, that's one of the core tenets, right?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer @rands True story, I own one of these just for fun. They are fun.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@martinbean many (most?) programming languages were designed by accomplished computer scientists with decades of experience.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@martinbean It is interesting how defensive people get about this topic. I wonder why that is? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LupusMichaelis yeah it says the data is a little loose, and it is, but it's enough for a broad consensus that cats are surprisingly spry little beasts in the air..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rands ok, gonna have to check this one out now. So much buzz.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AlessandroLai @storresi @nathanielks @nightmare339 @rory_blyth @BrendanEich @ahejlsberg @errcraft That's *exactly* what I said, and what the article said. Writing a programming language is incredibly difficult.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@martinbean indeed, it is kind to advise people to not jump off a cliff! ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AlessandroLai @storresi @nathanielks @nightmare339 @rory_blyth @BrendanEich @ahejlsberg @errcraft it really is that simple. If you ever see me attempting to create a programming language, this tweet will serve as my written permission to stop me by *any means necessary*.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AlessandroLai @storresi @nathanielks @nightmare339 @rory_blyth @BrendanEich @ahejlsberg @errcraft TL;DR don't write a programming language. Do *anything* and *everything* you can to *avoid* writing a programming language. It should be a method of absolute last resort where you have no other choices (or, you are a famous computer scientist writing a better language, ala Go)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AlessandroLai @storresi @nathanielks @nightmare339 @rory_blyth Javascript, C#, and Java were well designed languages from the outset, from widely respected and well established computer scientists (@BrendanEich, @ahejlsberg, and @errcraft)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@storresi @nathanielks @nightmare339 @AlessandroLai @rory_blyth It's bedrock fact that PHP was a very, *very* poorly designed language, because designing programming languages is quite difficult and requires deep computer science skills. Is it better today? I guess? But every language is better than it was 10 years ago.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SergiyOsypchuk I haven't been at SO since 2011 .. you'd need to contact them

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I was thoroughly impressed with Ukraine after visiting in 2019, now I'm ... *really* impressed. After they finish evicting unwanted visitors, I'm going back to celebrate and raise a glass in their honor 🍻

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz ok so.. I'm seeing.. lots of butts.. 😵💫

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu be sure to blog all this, it's fascinating!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 Imagine how much better you'd be doing if you had published 216 stories instead!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Which also explains this video https://t.co/YXVTRu5B9B

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pashdown I would have sworn those two were 3d rendered. But looking *very* closely, they are indeed videos like the others. Nature is freaky!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nathanielks @nightmare339 @AlessandroLai @rory_blyth Sometimes people don't like to hear the truth, because the truth hurts

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sdbruder Pretty much! Those two both freak me out. The others are nice enough and clearly videos

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DouglasShieldo eh, I dunno. You can build on sand.. there are ways.. but you should avoid it whenever you can.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@urza_cc @lexfridman the topic came up in his last episode, check it out!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DouglasShieldo JavaScript started several orders of magnitude ahead

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@leonzandman It's just the two I showed that looked a bit off to me. The others are clearly videos.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DouglasShieldo there's a long, storied history.. https://t.co/wYJaqQwDGH (2012) and https://t.co/TXZBjtoMRy (2008) .. history tends to repeat if we don't learn from it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Ah yes I was wrong. This is the one I thought was a rendering but looking closer it is indeed a video https://t.co/kOJC3UmjYL

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@splattne a glorious and appropriate gift!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rory_blyth mostly the tide has turned on that, TBH. People realize PHP isn't a good choice.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Twittbruck I suggest reading the comments or perhaps replying to the comments for a bit more nuance, as 280 chars ain't cuttin' the mustard

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Twittbruck pretty much, because https://t.co/NXLcZUC8QS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LMFinneyCoder 🙏 the show isn't 100% accurate, but it is where it matters, and there are so many important lessons in that show. It's brilliant.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lexfridman Agreed. And one way to help is to not amplify misinformation ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kwiens @discourse if you need any help switching to Discourse don't hesitate to reach out! 🤝

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thepanta82 @discourse if it's working, I shouldn't need to

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 yeah a research notebook is a different thing; that's fair. But in my experience more is to be gained from letting go; people tend to naturally err too much on the side of collecting all the pokemon.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 Never underestimate the power of recurrence. Great ideas are great *because* they bother you, they won't leave you alone, you keep seeing them in different places. And lesser ideas.. don't.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life yeah, things are moving fast! hopefully in the correct direction.. 🤞

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 I am the complete opposite. If an idea is good, it will always, *always* bubble back up. And if it doesn't.. that's a lesson you have yet to discover, too.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I thought this was disproven as a hack of the account?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CvX I'm pretty sure *some* of them are renderings, particularly the way the clouds reflect, and the lack of anti-aliasing on the edges. There are also quite a few videos mixed in and those are wayyyy less creepy. I'll post a video of the especially weird ones later.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CvX Pretty sure this is 3D rendering Google Earth style. Some of them are videos and those are def better

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life It is so sad because there are *incredible* artists all over the world and we get this utter bullshit instead 🤦♀️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life if *everyone* likes you, you probably aren't very interesting!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dimitrov2k do a quick Google and find out ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dimitrov2k it's the samsung 4k screen chromebook. Great machine but only so-so battery life due to thinness

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MonicaCellio oh gosh that was a bonus when you ordered the stuffed version of the "This is fine" dog.. there's probably tons of etsy merch around that theme since it blew up

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@alt_tag email me! my email address is on the about page of my blog.. I'll send you some!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dave_air @Carnage4Life @CaseyNewton sure, random could work. It could also be time based, as in "no more than 1 post every 6 hours to keep room for others in the feed". Lots of interesting choices here.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @CaseyNewton #2 is a real problem. I have a few people I follow that I like a lot .. but they post so much it dominates my feed. I wish there was a "follow but only show posts with more than (x) likes" option.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lexfridman can't wait to hear this one!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I can cite a dozen different sources with the same result. And when I was at Stack Overflow we did a "developer support" deal with them in 2010, with a very similar result... Facebook cares about one thing: Facebook.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life you could argue "if it bleeds, it leads" has been a problem for a lot of media over history, but Facebook scaled it to unprecedented levels, and are (unfortunately) very technically competent.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life "This issue was raised by Facebook’s integrity team, which proposed changes to the algorithm that would suppress, rather than accelerate, animus between users. These solutions were struck down by Mark Zuckerberg, because he prioritised growing engagement above other objectives."
