@codinghorror
@dhh @acho_arnold @rasmuscnielsen @replete Just use any @discourse instance, it is powered by @emberjs which is literally a part of Speedometer 2.0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathieupiette Correct. Read the Anandtech article about it to learn more https://t.co/DCvZX9j4t0 https://t.co/ztxH4gHjkM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer @ople It is more vomity than oniony

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer I seriously think I walked by one and almost took a pic of it but we were going somewhere

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This movie is insane. It is also a national treasure.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathieupiette Incorrect! The faster the SoC the quicker it gets through the work and into idle state which is where the power savings are.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard @nathanlgonzales White women can't be misogynists?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathieupiette More like efficiency, miles per gallon.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard @nathanlgonzales I am willing to factor in general misogyny here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nathanlgonzales @Pinboard It is all about who you are running against. Nobody knew how many people just irrationally hated Clinton’s guts.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@marco_lavg @rifforama Then you can read my reply; if you never use your phone or barely use it for email only then perf does not matter, of course. But if it touches the web, ever..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rifforama The project I work on, @discourse, is entirely JavaScript in the browser. Direct correlation.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hogganbeck The XR is a very good deal, but I am addicted to OLED

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hogganbeck Even better of course, $749 / 125 = 6.0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Protector1 Back gesture works fine in my testing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Seriously whatever gets rid of that ridiculous stupid permanent Android bottom screen navigation element is progress https://t.co/IdDgL0u9tB

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@recurza Probably this is a hip hotel brand after all

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard You are just angry that the average web page is 46 megabytes of ad code JavaScript now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa Someone else replied that they closed this loophole in the movie by indicating the machine stopped working after the first use, but I missed that part apparently.

But new old people are being created (and dying later and later) all the time.
But new old people are being created (and dying later and later) all the time.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cshirky @tomcoates furthermore, outside of immigration, birth rates keep decreasing. Being a young person is a dying art, ironically.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cshirky @tomcoates Also, there are far more old people than there were in 1950, 1960, 1970. The grey wave hasn't crested yet.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Let nature take its course

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 I watched all of it in the end and I regret it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hanzo55 Oh my God fuck no it is not

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@benadida @NathanBowers I have been talking about this since 2015. Not everyone was listening.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Loving the Singapore travel advice here from fellow Ruby geeks https://t.co/ekkYDkUGCI

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ericlaw When edge Firefox chrome and safari all support it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DrPaulRalph It does add friction, we’ll have to see how it evolves in the future

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
One year later, I can report that the replaceable headphone bits (since replaced), which I had thoroughly cleaned many times, and stored in a plastic bag with some baking soda for 8 months, STILL CARRY THAT SCENT. Apparently ... scent is forever, ya'll. 🗑️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza I know the feeling (leans in very closely)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles These are all selfies

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TehAurum I can't repro this, but the site goes through cloudflare, so likely CDN issue. I tried clearing the cloudflare cache, see if that helps?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek I cleared the cloudflare cache, see if that helps. I got no repro on this issue, but strongly suspect CDN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek I keep getting that report, but I can't repro it. Maybe a CloudFlare issue? Seems to be CDN issue based on a person's location?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@christhekeele @timbray Gotta be CDN related based on physical location

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@timbray Weird no repro on this OnePlus 6

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@botsko They do not look broken to me in Windows or Android?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@andiih Exactly! I was like, "hey that's actually my yo-yo!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bvdahle check out https://t.co/1lDqCfqn5d -- lots of great choices. If you like a challenge, I recommend TopYo Colossus IV. If you don't, get a Yoyofactory Confusion ;)

@codinghorror
@jarrod_dixon super slick!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@choy Raina Telgemeier books! Smile, Ghosts, Sisters, etc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Jonathan_Blow @mixedCase_ @ID_AA_Carmack It is generally true, but certainly *can* be untrue in specific cases. It's possible the auteur scenario you're describing could indeed be one of those cases. But I'd also note No Man's Sky (for example) is a far better game now than it was on release.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mixedCase_ @Jonathan_Blow @ID_AA_Carmack in other words "optimize for making it perfect right out of the gate" as a software development strategy is vastly inferior to "optimize for making it better based on user feedback as fast as we can"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mixedCase_ @Jonathan_Blow @ID_AA_Carmack no software plan survives contact with users .. all you can do is react and adapt, and the quicker you turn the crank on that cycle, the better you will do

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mpjme was not me, but I support the post, as I am no fan of berating people in public

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life And this surprises you, from a company that released the Fire Phone? Even the doomed ARM Surface made more overall sense

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza don't worry, I will be buying a 6-pack of new ipad pros when they are released

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@michaelgmadden @PassMarkInc unlikely, particularly on phones, which aggressively disallow background activity in apps due to battery concerns. and winamp doesn't need a whole core to play an MP3 file, even back in ye olde 2006

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Zerquix18 @The_Shadow_Hog I'll edit wayback machine links in.. the web rots, PLEASE DONATE TO INTERNET ARCHIVE!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Jonathan_Blow @ID_AA_Carmack Most things get ignored, so shipping code that isn't ignored, such that people actually tell you anything about it.. is progress. Assuming you fold that feedback in quickly and ship again. See this with many steam "early access" games too

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek this is why being an indoor enthusiast like me is such a long term lifehack.. it involves leaving the house, HARD PASS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Gok @miguelatwork Yeah 2 cores is the big conceptual leap. I can see 4 eventually being used well in some cases. 8, 16, 32, 64 is where it gets suuuper tough to scale

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@UkiahSmith I too slightly prefer a larger phone but I'm gonna wait one more release

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PassMarkInc difference between 2 and 4 (or 8, 16, 32) cores is negligible in office, browsing. Hell it's even negligible in modern gaming. Probably only matters in Photoshop for filters which are close to raytracing/encoding use.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@miguelatwork the far more interesting metric is single-threaded per TDP, since 90% of day to day computer perf is single thread perf.. unless you encode movies or raytrace all day long ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente still vastly greater cooling profile + vastly larger battery than a tablet

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PassMarkInc yep, single thread perf. Adding more cores isn't that interesting any more, and very little software can effectively use more than 2 cores anyhow

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@adildeshmukh1 I can honestly say I was completely lost in Primer

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@feartomorrow I'm kind of surprised they haven't done this already, based on the last 2 years of Apple SoC perf.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
If you simply took the same SoC and removed the phone size TDP limitations (as Apple already does for iPad releases) there's no question that you could get to 25th-30th with this exact silicon, today. And if you REALLY put a cooling system on it, like in a laptop? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@getaclue_1 @MKBHD only if you really want a larger screen though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@herrasbe watch the sequel, it is surprisingly good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain RIP Meow https://t.co/WqGvDgaWko

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza I disliked this whole aspect so much I literally blacked it out and forgot about it. But you are 100% right.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @deanputney I think I have this misperception because I am a loner and I identify with all the loner characters in all those shows. And Miss Piggy is seriously the most annoying and stereotypically lame muppet ever created.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @deanputney this is fair, I had blacked out the whole Miss Piggy and Kermit thing because I really truly hate those characters soooo much

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @deanputney well that's fair, there should basically be rape charges filed against Miss Piggy at this point. I always hated those two characters though. Grover is my jam.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza I dunno I see muppets as explicitly asexual, like all kids show stuff. I think too many grownups are into this stuff, ala "I love Disney!"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza I dunno, it does feel weird to inject sex into a kids show.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryanlrussell @tqbf same one, search for Discourse if curious

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tqbf you have to pay for vetting so you only get confirmed reproed reports and far less noise. That's the only downside. Vetting isn't optional in my experience.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard fair, but your enemy is more the user than the hardware in practice ;) at any rate for basic opsec I would strongly advise NOT buying anything newer than iPhone 7. Not worth the jump in cost at all.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ChrisLove @rmondello yeah Safari is great but definitely a bit behind in this area sadly

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard seems a bit tinfoil hat to me, as long as iOS 12 is on there, but OK.. your baseline cost of entry is now $449 for the iPhone 7 (unlocked).

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Apple sells 7, 8, and XS/XR now. But I'd recommend a used iPhone 6s for maximum bang for the buck. I would not recommend the 6, it is a bit too old at this point.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard older iPhones are a good choice as well; Apple's hardware is so crazy fast you can buy an iPhone 6s and it's literally as fast as the newest and "best" Qualcomm offers. Camera won't be as good though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley why did you just post a picture of Nathan Drake from Uncharted

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BoingBoing cc @seesharp now I know what to get you for xmas

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sharkyl the link to play is on that page, where it says PLAY IT NOW, click that 😉

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Fighting the future is a losing battle. And you can get an adapter with two ports for charging while listening.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Nah an adapter is like 5 bucks, all you need. Much ado about nothing. Floppy drives needed to be killed off.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kesterallen you're saying the article is wrong? I don't know.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@natfriedman cheap solar, mostly

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eliah probably dead, so much history lost in cool apps that no longer exist in the app store cc @textfiles

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout hark! upon yon verdant glen! https://t.co/3HaFh7zSDp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer Do I own myself? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@asadotzler @bobbydigitales @samsaffron @firefox @discourse @googlechrome @MicrosoftEdge I would in fact say that 30% slower is "much slower".
