y'know, Mads was on to something. The difference between Gzip (deflate + crc + header/footer) and Deflate is surprisingly big on slow CPUs.

this is about as apples-to-apples as it gets. servers practically identical, db just backed up and restored, same queries, etc.

I can now pretty much confirm that SQL 2008 is 20%+ slower than SQL 2005 at full text stuff, across the board. That's.. bad.. for us. :(

urgh, it seems the full text stuff is part of what got slower in 2008, and we use that a LOT. damn.

well, sql 2008 is indeed faster in *most* queries I'm trying, so that's encouraging. But not all..

every time I've tried "rebuilding the indexes" or "rebuilding the statistics" it has never made a lick of difference. This time, same thing.

looks like subtly different paths in the execution plans for some of these. *Most* are faster but by no means all. Bummer.

Hmm. Why would our SQL 2008 box, on identical hardware, be producing *slower* query results for a few different queries I tried? :(
