@codinghorror
@Pxtl yeah I talked about this at https://t.co/g32kLXURsT

@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@james_clark I got the midrange i7-9750h version -- I don't personally see the point of Core i9 overkill in that small of a form factor -- and during memtest (I just built it), it is surprisingly quiet.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is a very interesting, albeit expensive, build. I think it's close to as small as you can possibly get for a PC with a "real" video card. Note power supply is integrated, so no chonky power brick! https://t.co/xkUj1tJXXD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Agree, this is a good thing, if comically overdue

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles Why not quit Facebook entirely?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer The masks are helpful reminders at least

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@krabbe 🤷♂️ I assume the highest risk folks will go first, but your guess is as good as mine

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pashdown @1nfinityLoop I love that the lore is this character is a woman and nobody knows (because of the suit)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@1nfinityLoop make sure the nose bridge is beefy, is the only thing I can advise. It has to fit tightly around the nose or you're gonna have a foggy time with glasses

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the reason I say this is I've tried a number of masks and found quite a big difference in comfort & ease of use between them. Plus the whole glasses and nose bridge effectiveness thing.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
here's a very positive review with dozens of hours of hands on so ... 🤷♂️ https://t.co/O8hKCEALGN

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this was.. not exactly a good haircut. But hey, less hair on my head!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@andrew_b_berg Sometimes! Also picked for ease of licensing reasons though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@besharamey @hollygfirestone You know they call ranch dressing / sauce “American sauce” outside the US right? I’m serious, look it up!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LightStruk You may be right but I think it depends on the library size. Top 5 percent?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@splattne @jongalloway Dang I haven’t started S3 yet. At least it is no Westworld where it gets exponentially worse each season! And I am not exaggerating!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MLEco2h2o @kemitchell yeah, it's in the news right now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza so weird https://t.co/aFjZMRA7o6

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@moxie Consider running a @discourse, happy to host it for y’all for free

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@twang @jharinstein I concur and furthermore I think Jason should be cancelled

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jakeanstadt It is tricky because you *could* put the full arcade version on that particular handheld device. But I think I will limit it to home systems to keep the list of games to a reasonable number

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RichDapice no, just the "best" 100 titles for the respective platforms. For example the GBA had ~1500 games. Nobody wants to scroll through all those. Nobody sane, anyway.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard seriously, this is a bad idea. Like.. really bad. Get the Evo or Pro.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Yes, see https://t.co/CCFsItb39f

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard I would strongly *not* recommend that QVO drive. Get an EVO or a Pro. I have a 4TB QVO and it has very *very* odd performance characteristics. It's basically a tape drive.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I put the details here https://t.co/KjETJP0OyQ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@traydonn I don't tend to trust metacritic for things this old, though, pre-internet effectively. And no such list for say, NeoGeo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mtougeron I like that it is the result of voting, rather than some rando person's individual idea of the top 100, that helps a lot.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mtougeron oh that's a good one. Similar links for SNES / Neo Geo?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hollygfirestone it was very sweet, we got a little note thanking us and also a driver notification thanks from within the Amazon site itself which I had never seen before ♥

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chiefpad @Carnage4Life never go full Torvalds

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please yeah that'd be a no. I had to stop watching horror altogether.

@deadprogrammer it still absolutely blows my mind that chicken used to be a rare delicacy https://t.co/rzgRQNAZgE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I don't bother with the diplomacy, it saves time

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chucker @joeljohnson totally underrated tweet 🥇

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tvanfosson @jlericson I guess we didn't have the computer performance to do a whole lot better at the time, to be fair.. pointer / memory safety is not free

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jlericson Decades of endless null pointer security exploits were an incredible cost to society though. Mixed feelings about C

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MaybeEdward that's surprising

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jongalloway You have good taste!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard isn't the plan more or less "consistently wear masks when around other people"?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Frauenfelder that is awesome

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stephentyrone note where Haswell sits in this graph, for example. Ruby results *very* similar. https://t.co/vhxLtsrGKM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stephentyrone At minimum we saw 1.8x improvement going from 2013 Ivy Bridge to 2016 Skylake. I'd expect that gets up to 2.0x or slightly more with the additional clock speeds / better turbos in Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stephentyrone b. isn't really true. Skylake was a big deal. I agree that the ever-more iterations of skylake were kind of marginal improvements (Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake). Also the low end E3 Xeons we use are identical, they just "enterprise" them with a label (and ECC support)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stephentyrone we benched some big improvements in the Discourse unit tests going from Ivy Bridge (2013) to Skylake (2016), details at https://t.co/UAx5pmjGit

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu Haswell is quite old. TREAT YO' SELF DAN LUU!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza memory allocators are like crack to @samsaffron

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@superwuster Watchmen, but Chernobyl is amazing. Leftovers is a very different and unique beast.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tovbinm so it's like an actual skull

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please my daughter, apropos of nothing, just said "if I had a cat I'd name it Pretzel". And she knew nothing of this amazing cat!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard I am confident we can statistics the shit out of this

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@leahculver @WearAtoms I also have an Atoms mask and like it! 👍

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill all day erry day

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nimbusgo @dancharvey @CarlosTighe @ping0x89 Facebook actively resisted this. Twitter embraced it. Why? Leadership. https://t.co/oqyONsE0wJ

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nimbusgo @dancharvey @CarlosTighe @ping0x89 Facebook is uniquely amoral, always has been, this is especially evident if you look at recent actions their leadership has taken

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bdurrett @mathowie I am like 99 percent sure the browser based 2FA verifies the expected domain. This is not the “manually type a code” kind. Try it in any @discourse instance (we also support auth apps)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie @discourse my point is we have ~40 people at the company and implementing 2FA hardware support took us like a few weeks, maybe one month, for one engineer. Compare with companies that have hundreds or thousands of employees.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie every instance of @discourse supports it, how hard can it be? 🤷♀️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie you should have 2FA enabled on ANYTHING important, which makes these attacks completely irrelevant

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Mazzeo tell me about your biggest failure

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
As if I needed another reason to hate Qualcomm's awful hardware

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevejohnryan @mquirion Yeah we won’t talk about TA Kingdoms..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@matthewmcvickar Omg this is genius 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Stuff like the above ☝ is why I have a monthly donation set up to The Internet Archive. And you should too! https://t.co/gcF4syRaBp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@djbaskin And I hope you are rewarded handsomely for the brilliant idea 🙇♂️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BriedisM both forms still work ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@iCatija yeah spoilers and tables are probably the most common asks. There's a fairly robust ad-hoc tables implementation out there. I think spoilers is more all over the map.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Nobody. Nobody is laughing now.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
[image missing]

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi it's.. possible. ARM is wildly underrated, specifically the Apple A11, A12, A13 are so crazily off the charts good and they get like zero serious press about this. I guess others will figure it out ... when they figure it out. Invest accordingly.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi we have the worst president in the last 100 years

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@xor I am still traumatized by that time I installed Windows NT 3.51 from like 20+ 3.5" floppies.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rory_blyth So great to hear from you man. I know it is hard. Stick with it. ❤️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AndrewBrobston @gortok Yeah I myself asked for it to be removed a while back, many years ago. Didn’t feel right to be outside the company with that level of access.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer Developers developers?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza @stevesi yet another reason webapps are winning the long game 💪

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @migueldeicaza I think meth is a better analogy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life WIRES 4 LYYYYYYFFFEEE
