@codinghorror
And this is, apparently, what Theranos aspired to be? Pic taken inside a Safeway grocery store. https://t.co/vaHh4rRTvu

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And it's real! You can buy it! 10.5k sold!! https://t.co/gJjLmkaq3c

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@john_lam This is great -- I've been trying to find a place to position another monitor alongside the 49" ultrawide.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
well, the good news is that the unencryption is resilient, hard-rebooting doesn't break it, but it will keep trying and failing to unencrypt! I tried to leave some breadcrumbs for others with the same problem here.. https://t.co/dSxCU7L4Ie

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The three dimensionality aspect really makes me want a 16x16 or even 64x64 https://t.co/WmXtzWs0Cs

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DigitalLuiggi Well, yeah. I’ll give it overnight to sort itself

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DamianEdwards The last I read you can’t trust “hardware” encryption, so better to do it in software. More consistent. And it can use the CPU hardware acceleration for the necessary math.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@honestduane Well, I wasn’t sure if I needed to re-encrypt with the changed motherboard / TPM, I entered the enormous numeric unlock key on boot of course, but thought “heck might as well just repeat the encryption, that will be safer” turns out maybe not?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is six hours in, decrypting around 140gb of data on a 2tb drive. I don’t feel like force restarting is a good idea in this scenario.. 😱 https://t.co/JlJ22PWtcK

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thenickrandolph @amandaksilver @discourse yeah being able to drop in and drop out at will, and casually, is an explicit objective. The web is a big place, but everyone has their favorite {x} websites, right? I just want {x} to be bigger than 1, like it is in China..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thenickrandolph @amandaksilver @discourse I guess it depends on the use case, but the community rolls on .. with or without you. Ideally with you, but it's like romantic relationships and friendships: how many can you *really* have at once? Every person has their own "too little" and "too much" limit.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amandaksilver we're working very, very hard on this problem at @discourse. We are a fully open source paragraph / storytelling based collaboration tool.. we just added integrated chat for better short term memory and lighter weight "fast lane" conversations.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please do cats catcall each other?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@saltcod @siracusa here's one attempt https://t.co/ToL1YQ4axk .. no studio though https://t.co/s8rMt4pFwi

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Nobody should "blame" themselves for the fact that centralization is always the path of least resistance .. that said, if you want to actively fund decentralization @jack feel free to ping us at @discourse ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@davidlymanning @9thousandbytes @SpeakingBee @USNavy The important part is that we focus on fixing this, whatever small steps we can take to work toward more affordable *literally* life-essential drugs!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ArminSamii yes exactly lol. We project on the ceiling and I had to adjust for that as well in the color balance.. so I feel your pain! 📽️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hodlbod @LorenCarvalho @RealMacReport I would imagine there are other hybrid vehicles for sale. I only mentioned the minivan because it was apples-to-apples, e.g. ICE minivan vs hybrid minivan

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa eh, I think a baseline from a standard app, on a standard phone, at a standard measured distance / position, should be table stakes.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Plus the mythical Steam Deck, once it ships https://t.co/iL4wsuDR7R

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@siracusa can't this be settled with specific smartphones, at a specified distance from the unit, running an agreed upon sound level measurement app?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnnygf hah cool https://t.co/REYFQbJ1FS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RealMacReport it is possible to buy used vehicles.. or a hybrid.. our hybrid sienna gets more than DOUBLE the gas milage of our old honda minivan, and that's in city driving!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
🗓️ Dec 11 2008 → 🗓️ Mar 29 2022 = 🗓️ 4,856 days... that is one new version of Chrome every 49 days on average.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
if anyone has a good use for it, contact me! happy to send it over.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jongalloway @splattne you do have to be extra-special-gentle when informing users they cannot type absolutely whatever what they want to into a box on the internet and then press the SUBMIT button ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn yeah, I get the strong impression WeWork was doing virtually little "WeWork" on any of that part.. they did build an internal LinkedIn clone that nobody used!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jongalloway @splattne Try https://t.co/qpgbjBMoYr for recommendation oriented stuff. That was its original design goal, to tackle exactly these kind of "recommend me a.." discussions. https://t.co/lhy9yntKkr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@maijasauna this is awesome too

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
as @broderick said "There are basically two kinds of conservative men on the internet — guys who want to talk about sports and guys who want to talk about how horny they are" .. this video combines both 🎁

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn I don't know that it's a great business in general; as stated many times in the documentary (I haven't started WeCrashed yet), it's just real estate. Where's the *tech*?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I didn’t realize WeWork was almost Theranos levels of fraud. It’s … bad. I thought of it as “coworking with tech” but it was more like “coworking with a heavy dusting of fraud”

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx The movie does not make any sense on like three different levels

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@axlotl Definitely not. Watched it while doing some mailing paperwork

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is... not a good movie

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@craig_tracey @tenderlove what about yelling from a safe distance? at least to draw attention? That seems like a reasonable compromise vs. physically approaching?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The more I use this device, the more I think foldables may be .. the actual future. I even set mine up with cellular, because it is guaranteed an Android 12L upgrade. The Surface Duo 3/4/5 will be very interesting to watch! Foldable prices are still a big problem though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mg just the built in inkbird ios app in the app store.. I have very simple needs

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mnewberg that said, I do seem to be able to connect from outside the fridge reliably?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@parsley72 just the native app that is linked in the docs for all inkbird models.. seems to work fine for my very simple use case!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BradLedford I can recommend both models so far. See my other reply for the data logged!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nutsmuggler You are absolutely correct. The built in LED temp indicator in our fridge is comically incorrect

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Houston we have data logging! So both Inkbird models work fine and have the essential feature I wanted, to keep a running log of temps (I set it to every 10 minutes). This is two fridges and two freezers https://t.co/kBIuKUDWCo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rocinantefool goes to show you a) never take trust for granted, no matter how small the community and b) learn to spot fakes if you're going to be competitive

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DoomChild2 @StackOverflow It has to be built into every OS and device, not special software that has to be installed on every single device and almost nobody uses

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@steven_odb No, we see all the old photos cycle through!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life yeah we've seen this take deep root on AirBnB in recent years

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
via the always excellent @ThisIsSethsBlog

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout @chadchabot I don't think so, but you might find out for yourself soon! 🎁

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eviltrout @chadchabot we solved this by using an android projector to project on the ceiling. works quite well: https://t.co/c2kuGslSTr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
ah yes, I haven't started WeCrashed yet! As they say, the fish rots from the head, and this is deeply true 🐟

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DoomChild2 @StackOverflow login with google, twitter, facebook, amazon, or whatever trusted third party service, e.g. https://t.co/XViQKPg6dp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles also I was watching HUGE sections of Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back on youtube yesterday.. the entire section where Luke takes on the AT-AT! https://t.co/tqrxG3PZvi and https://t.co/6ziUXcWDGA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles Can you do that thing where you flip it, reverse it, or apply some kind of grain filter so it's not quite recognizable to the pattern matchers?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mkobach Dramatic increase in human lifespan is bad for society long term. Worst still would be infinite (or very long, hundreds of years) life.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life that's the problem with reddit: it incentivizes the wrong things. https://t.co/bkgNqgbPaD funny because I see the same pattern play out, over and over, time and time again. It's the way the system is designed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx isn't Anker a more well known, reliable brand than .. AOHI?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tdotrob they have larger versions!?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
also, most compact 65w charger! https://t.co/Z99BWiklgB

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
ok, I know this is pushing the boundaries of USEFUL, but I'm going *full HypnoCube* on this one https://t.co/twlk9xU8P2 .. the three dimensionality of the "display" really got to me

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Fastsaller @EdwardKinitz yes "Hold data for 20 days if the sampling interval is 1min, and the max date storage is 30000 points. Different sampling interval can be setting.(10s/ 30s/ 1min/ 2mins/ 5mins/ 10mins/ 30mins) The saving data time will be different if you choose different sampling interval."

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@erickmagnus @ciroiriarte I'm sure a surface duo 3 is in the works.. I'd like to see one with much smaller bezels and a more seamless fold. The 2 adds more cameras and faster SoC, mostly?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisbrandow @gruber plus the physical ACT of *actually* folding the device can cause things to happen (camera switches, app changes, etc).. like docking a keyboard can, etc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mnewberg well, hopefully I won't need to find out.. the idea is for the device to store a week (or more) of temp/humidity data on board, then I open the door to check in every week and download that data via bluetooth

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PhillipHoff @IdealSciences I thought about wifi but all I really *need* is a week or two of onboard data point storage, then I sync via bluetooth and check in every week or so?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Fastsaller @EdwardKinitz I don't think so because this one doesn't have data storage on board. Ideally I want to connect to it via my phone once a week and look at the logged temp/humidity data points stored on the device for that week (or more).

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rrmdp since I haven't been at Stack since 2012 you'd need to ask them!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@xpavloff @BeastyISNT I watched no videos! In true man style I valiantly struggled on my own, like the maverick cowboy that I truly am, until it worked! Asking for help is unmanly and shameful!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@emoRobot right after my ted talk

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Canon Cat is based on many of the same philosophies; here's a promotional video from the early 1980s https://t.co/Ld1AcBLDfK

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BradLedford So yeah, 2 degree variation on temp and 2 percent variation on humidity seems like the deal here?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@csharpfritz Well, the rear blade seems to be in good shape so far! ps how dare you sir

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ClipperChip A real movie theater

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jesflres yes, my entire family (5 people)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Fastsaller @EdwardKinitz these are "Inkbird" brand, not sure about those.. all I want is a bit of local storage for temp history and bluetooth interface

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hschhaya @VernierST Yes love it!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BradLedford I just unboxed them so they haven't had time to normalize, I guess. I'll check again in an hour or so, and leave them in that position.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisbrandow @gruber Having a literal fold line is huuuuge, massive difference

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
called out for excellent use of the word "tether" there https://t.co/quLLEw9MSm

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@songieOs yeah speedometer is more representative of real world performance, e.g. using the web browser.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this is an interesting device.. the side-by-side apps use case is quite cool (let me check my calendar as I reply to this email..). I think to be truly effective as a foldable you need a (fancy, expensive) borderless design though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@songieOs Speedometer 2.0 is 47, so it's squarely in iPhone 7 territory. Honestly that is giving it more credit than it deserves, see data: https://t.co/2udHUfOoLi

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paolom no it's the original one. There is a newer model, the 2.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@erickmagnus @ciroiriarte yes, it is very neat for side by side dual-app activities. Spanning the screen is a bit.. weirder.. especially with the giant bezels and the big gap. I could see a foldable with borderless design doing better.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx refurb off Amazon. It looks pristine, came with the case but no accessories. Locked to AT&T but I don't care about that.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Performance wise it is a snapdragon 855, so ye olde 2016 iPhone 7 levels of performance, but that is good enough for most stuff

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JAlanHenning Hey thanks we are looking for ways to fold this into https://t.co/bhoFTXSG24
