@codinghorror
@aidencoder yes, if you are the first competent org to produce a good, stylish, reliable photo sharing app on a smartphone, you get to be Instagram, lucky you.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@aidencoder a little bit of fun was always OK, but there is a strong trend towards strictness, because of the reputation system. People want fair reputation, not "oh you got 30k reputation for posting a programming joke GIF"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
For reference there are ~750 billionaires in the USA, around ~50k people with $100m+ net worth, but mostly it's the same as it ever was https://t.co/Bd1t5RvBCI .. and since that amazing video was produced, things have gotten.. a lot worse. 😬

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@treppenwitz_ I will find you 👀

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Austen This is one reason why at @discourse we have a strict rule to keep meetings to an *absolute minimum*. Not a panacea by any means but a big help.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@typesfast If you're using the Reid Hoffman (or whoever it was) "blitzscaling" playbook, then yeah. Not personally a fan of that model, which I think depends heavily on "you were in the right time at the right place" luck. But if you're using a different playbook?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gknauss I maintain this was the only truly GOOD Atari 2600 game.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@violetblue @jwz Well played. Actively *reducing* available housing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Adding “and *we* can make a small step in that direction by…” should be your next thought

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz Better than nothing at least, and I do not mean that ironically

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tenderlove Oh so you like to play God, too? 😉

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tungolum @textfiles Howwwww is this possible? Can I see this video?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim @BaggageClaim11 I think they are both a-holes, and I admire people willing to change their minds

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@robsears @Carnage4Life well, my point is we're *never* getting an amendment to the constitution on this one, but lethality will continue to increase linearly, if not exponentially (think phased plasma weapons)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@robsears @Carnage4Life nukes for everyone! I deserve the right to protect my family. https://t.co/DlOlkSYwad

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamiequint @Carnage4Life We bought at the PEAK of the market (in 2005-2006) and still made a stupid abount of return on our home purchase. Will this continue forever? God I hope not because how will anyone afford anything!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamiequint @Carnage4Life Around here (bay area), you won't have any money left to do anything significant after paying rent. Unless you're making megabucks.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@benhoad have not gotten there yet!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@guilleocampo The "lobbing shots" aspect of paintball irks me to no end. Just arcing random shots in constantly from long distance. It's way too effective.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheChelseaTalk basically *any* multiplayer game with 64+ players works this way. It's a constant.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamiequint @Carnage4Life "many" is a weasel word. I agree that in SOME cases you are better off throwing money away, getting 0% equity in real estate, but.. mostly no.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheChelseaTalk No, more like joining a multiplayer game and pretty much instantly dying about 50 times in a row far behind the "front lines"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
fair warning, if divorce is a tricky subject in your family, this one could be a bit trigger-y

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Rogue One was very good. And I know the story co-creator from olden forum days: Garry Whitta https://t.co/WfG6QvtKON

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
what I've learned is that if you go into combat you're likely to die at a completely random moment from an enemy you had no chance of seeing or responding to. So yeah. Let's.. not.. have wars?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nikhilkardale If this was truly your gut feeling and not a Google search, kudos. You were the first to get it right. 🤝

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jesusmnavarrol I don't think you got this one right?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
The answer is "Forrest Gump". And having played lots of multiplayer 'combat' videogames, I agree with their assertion: " It was very sudden, the enemy isn't seen, and it happens very quickly."

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@carlfish I.. have not been a fan of anything I've seen so far 🤷

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@elyktrix No Web ME? Damn that is ice cold

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwienczek Wtf? The scene is from the Vietnam war!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz Yeah but if the coupon is only like 5 percent off, maybe that’ll satisfy the urge while keeping away the cheapskates?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz People fuckin’ looooove discount codes. Flip it around, make an easily Google-able page with a very minor discount code. You will sell more than you would otherwise, so win-win

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lizardbill Unfortunately yes

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life @CaseyNewton Oh I’ve seen ads for deepfake on demand already

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JasonNKyle Jason is giving you the only hint I’m gonna give you. If it seems obvious it is not correct. 👆

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life It’s almost like we need the open web!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pomeranian99 @justAfanDavid What next, Clive? A built in fax machine? PCMCIA slot?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life This is why I’m gonna win my 2030 bet with Carmack!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwodtke I don’t think that is fair. There are good people working, just not enough of them, and the system (electoral college) is working against all of them.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheWeebDev As if I needed another reason to dislike it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulgodfrey @paulg @adad8m Hmm. “They will not be allowed to operate in dense fog or heavy rain.” “The City claims that Cruise’s self-driving cars are “technologically unable” to pull over to the curb when picking up or dropping off passengers” yeah.. I’ll double the bet

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life The lethality argument is true though. Massive increase in lethality with new, assault style weapons, far beyond what was known or even imagined in 1788. And it will continue to increase over time; the science of warfare never stops.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life It’s a lottery but if you rent you get completely screwed, that is the one constant

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@oratoba there was a picture of the actual show marquee so def referring to the show

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@__colematt @mathowie it is splitting hairs, but an Uzi wouldn't cause near as much damage as an AR..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nothingsmonstrd @SwiftOnSecurity Mine went OK except for the projectile vomiting all over the bedroom floor at 6am

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gknauss Oh you didn't play the Amiga version? I'm sorry for you, Greg. So sorry. I did.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Jon_E @Carnage4Life YES! Massive secret fees. MASSIVE. "cleaning" and a ton of extra stuff added only when you finalize checkout. Expensive as *hell*!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ejc3 video covers this, but I think his key insight is correct: ubiquitous free-to-play cross-play killed consoles.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rogerlipscombe @avinashbhat possibly but not much data to support that theory so far

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PeterLaCombJr @forallmankind_ found it through everyone's favorite show about teenage girls addicted to oxy!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pt yeah, wikipedia says he'd make small edits and take some writing credits tho

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@securingdev Euphoria is where the kids are hearing it these days. If you like shows about teenage girls addicted to oxy it's pretty good.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life which does kinda explain Boss Baby Elon Musk as well? I dunno. Just riffing here.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I guess what makes people exceptional is that there are things which are kinda *wrong* with them, but in.. interesting ways. 🤷

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Oh this one is easy for me. I never look. Never have, never will. It's not in me to do it. I *literally* don't care.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Anecdotally, lots of pushback on pretty bad AirBnB experiences on our team across multiple countries. Hotels seeming more and more appealing. (I also had a very bad one recently as well.)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@avinashbhat @rogerlipscombe google it, all the data supports it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rogerlipscombe i think lithium is one of the least plausible reasons for the obesity epidemic I have ever heard, tbh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@evgsyr Yeah this is the way. Underpay for cpu (budget wise) and overpay for gpu.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@refi_64 It is amazing how bad all the qualcomm stuff is, really. And they hold the entire android market hostage.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dvpita It is also not 10 years old! At least get the facts right!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sams_Antics As other countries have amply demonstrated, the root problem is: wide, easy availability of extremely lethal weapons. Watch any video comparing lethality (entrance and exit wound) damage of a handgun vs. assault rifle. It is *staggering*.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And, in an incredibly strange turn of events, it’s.. possibly a good idea, almost like fluoridated water? https://t.co/l7BDbBPIY9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@emanatee This is actually kinda wrong imo

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dvpita It’s snapdragon 845 so midrange Android level speed. Which for emulation is a lot.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SomeTweeter420 No! I will have to dig through sketchy ass Discords now. I am disappointed in all of you! Especially you over there! Yes, you!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@evgsyr that said Steam was very smart to optimize for GPU over CPU. The balance is way off on the Aya Neo, too much CPU, not enough GPU.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@evgsyr Speedometer 2.0 sez, 47 on the snapdragon 845, and 151 on the Aya Neo so.. yeah, my man

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Does anyone have a well "organized" 256gb SD card image iso for the Ayn Odin (wink wink, nudge nudge)?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@timbray we may reach diminishing returns with "add more cache!", but my research all shows that Qualcomm consistently offers a meager level of cache compared to Apple. Less than half. You can look at DDR5 memory results as well on other platforms.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GTB52895442 at least Google is FINALLY working on their own SoC hardware. 4 years too late, but hey, I'll take it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
well, I meant "pay to win", but too late to edit this now

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sams_Antics absurd, but facts say it happens just about every day. Is that absurd? You tell me. Here's a fun wikipidia entry! Read it along with me, Sam! https://t.co/ZZ2gqNVNab

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GTB52895442 good question! My working theory is that QUALCOMM FUCKING SUCKS AT THEIR JOBS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
So per the die shots, M1/M2 have 8mb L2 cache, far beyond what Qualcomm offers, and A15 has 32mb (!) L2 cache?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Good deep dive on M2 https://t.co/ZfV3Q3oVqB

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pixeloution @mstirso @Carnage4Life I don't find 3-5 hours of your time you gift random companies to be useful (at all, actually) in determining if the company and you are a good fit, nor is an interview "work" in any meaningful sense. That's my bottom line. 🤷

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pixeloution @mstirso @Carnage4Life The article says several of the interviews were "multiple rounds". That's at least 1 hour per round. If not more. Absolutely unpaid time. You gift them that time.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@EricCurtis I like to think of myself as a generous person, Eric! 👴

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanielHoffmann_ way more than they used to be though. But I type this on a 48" 4k monitor, whereas I had three 27" 4k monitors before, so PPI is taking a beating (it's an experiment)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lookitskris Oh it's def not a problem, just interesting how society is changing to be more accepting of it as "normal"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sams_Antics ....aaand the right for your and my children to get shot by assault rifles until they are so mutilated their bodies can barely be identified, every day. Exactly as the framers intended!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mstirso @Carnage4Life You get paid for your time, but you need to carve out the time. This is also, by the way *true of regular interviews!!* For which you get paid nada, zilch, zero.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@heeeedgy @KristyT @Carnage4Life In my case it took 2008 - 2021 (13 years) to "make it up" in equity. Be sure you're factoring that into your decision making. And most never do..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
80% no tattoos is higher than I expected, but I think my audience skews heavily male, and possibly a tad older (think 30 vs 20)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@refi_64 The chart compares A14, which is older (note both are 5nm), and *still* kicks the 888's ass all over the place.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT @Carnage4Life In this case, I don't like hires that care *only* about compensation. Makes sense that they went with the finance/quant stuff in the end, but man, I personally don't wanna die as Willy Loman.
