This is akin to https://t.co/VaW7IWS8SR versus https://t.co/Zi5lkuyig4 in my mind. Very different audiences and needs. Both 100% valid.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Sure, the signal/noise of that sub-site would be dramatically worse than SO proper, and the reputation scores wouldn't mean much outside the venue. But it'd be fun for the participants, laid back, and *usually* educational for an audience that wants that particular experience.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@trionkidnapper it's suuuuper not good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
But the Amazon Jack Ryan starring that guy from The Office *was* surprisingly great. Watch that instead!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@vongillern it is odd because ramdisks end up being a bad deal for a number of reasons, I think overhead mostly, plus it cuts into other tasks that could use the RAM

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sentin I love that scene so much, when they come back

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rory_blyth it's a fresh.. a fresh.. mesh.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wilshipley I have a baseline here: is Dorsey for or against it? If he's for it, then it's probably a bad idea. If he's against it, then it's probably a good idea.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@OH_NOES so one day instead of 2-6 days ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
you can see here why the SSD revolution was arguably the last big thing to happen in computing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I'll even go this far: Sales is a vastly greater and more important field to humanity than Programming will *ever* be. And if you can do both? Then you legitimately have the power to change the world.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Take it from @patio11 -- even if you vehemently deny that work in sales.. you still do. Sorry! https://t.co/ibCFlkYLVY

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@coreyh this is also quite plausible, to me the future isn't megascale constructions, it's .. small and internal and time-warping ala the movie "Her" https://t.co/bqHWIKeWWV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@yburyug @deadprogrammer no, what you need is morale improvement beatings and public stonings

Note that for me, this is literally.. Stack Overflow .. blog post incoming

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @craigstuntz @johnFneuhaus @tedpercival @DenaeFord @Wikipedia agreed; wikipedia is a way more fundamental service. not everyone needs to be or should be a programmer, in the same way a world full of auto mechanics isn't really.. good? https://t.co/3ufpEQYLc5

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @craigstuntz @johnFneuhaus @tedpercival @DenaeFord In other words, the largest benefit is info that’s already there. Easier for SO as the scope is so much narrower than “every person, topic, place, and thing that has ever existed or will exist”

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@RageousX @flobeauchamp The system design actively works against rational communication

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @craigstuntz @johnFneuhaus @tedpercival @DenaeFord Not every Wikipedia reader must be a contributor, ditto for Stack Overflow. In fact if both are working as designed in an ideal world 99.9999% of people would never need to contribute

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt Oh dear wha’happen?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@snemarch Sort of but you can remove it after you have the app and keys going

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@flobeauchamp oh god that's not even a choice, @RageousX told me he regularly throws away reddit accounts and I think he's right.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bvanoudtshoorn @DenaeFord @discourse It is currently there in very basic form, new users have a light grey name.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lordeagle @feartomorrow no, I just thought I would try Black Ops since they finally have a large map multiplayer. I find tiny map multiplayer really boring, like going back in time to Quake 3.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
My only beef is that Black Ops visual style is ... kind of eye wateringly hideous. It is future soldiering as imagined by juggalos in a fever haze of bong smoke https://t.co/oOohSkwuhD

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please I'm lovin' it https://t.co/1gEpzVOpj7

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ciphertxt whoa whoa whoa there cowboy, that's teenager material

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonology @StackExchange I am not a fan of zero-anxiety systems, let me put it that way

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lucas_gonze @jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord it's a hybrid system, for sure, but this element has been there since inception https://t.co/v4Yj0rI2h7 https://t.co/GH0aKwLtOj

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonology @StackExchange @Quora @SlantCo well yeah, that's sorta intentional. It's the anxiety of giving a presentation to your peers, the anxiety of showing up to a new job on your first day with lots of other talented people, etc. Imagine what it'd be like if there was zero anxiety, ever?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord That "type of person" is a person (for stack overflow) who is comfortable with light competition aspects (rep scores, answer ranking, downvoting), and also willing to define their contributions in terms of utility to *others*, not just themselves.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord the original reply literally said, remove close votes. So I beg to differ.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord I think it is 100% fine to say "I don't want to compete with anyone, that's not my jam" or "I don't want to define my contributions in terms of utility to others" and choose to work on / with a parallel system that doesn't have this aspect.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord in my experience, systems with "let's collaboratively build utility together" tension like Wikipedia and Stack Overflow are never going to appeal to everyone. Plus SO has the additional tension of being a semi-competitive system with rep scores, etc.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord also, I guess SO should do a better job of educating new visitors that the goal isn't "free unlimited programming tech support" but "let's collaboratively build artifacts that will help future programmers". The latter is more work than the former, and if that's a turn off...

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord I am fine with all that, but lowering the bar to "whatever you type in this box will be unconditionally accepted no matter what" .. would essentially destroy what makes Stack Overflow worth visiting (and Wikipedia too for that matter)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jasonology @DenaeFord @StackExchange interesting; I don't find that to be true. Can you provide some examples? Comments don't generate reputation, so answers left there won't benefit anyone's rep score, either.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessamyn @tedpercival @DenaeFord not substantially different from the tensions in Wikipedia's system; the metric is not "can I type stuff in a box" but "what can we build together that will be useful to future developers"

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ID_AA_Carmack it looks like kinect style depth cameras are hitting mainstream now, I recently got this $70 one for signing into Windows ala iPhone X/XS and it's *great* https://t.co/z7kpwyi5SW

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard well the *reasons* here are much more clear, so therefore the call to action is also clear. Steve King is absolutely vile by any measure, for example.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi whoops https://t.co/1AtERcZaea but yeah. Random example $2.99 per item with free shipping to the US from China. That's .. not right. https://t.co/91TSHkO66R

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@davidcampey I always get https://t.co/ejlUnjfDtj and https://t.co/7Kh3fSUYJd mixed up cc @Carnage4Life

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard this is soooo much more effective than "tech workers gotta unionize because reasons!" 👏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi This is oddly enough IMO a legit complaint on shipping rate oddities. You can buy so many things direct from China via https://t.co/rOhJ7UcAPU and the shipping is *crazily* cheap for an item coming all the way from China.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danekhollas @jumprite0 a community which bans users a bit too frequently is *far* more sane than one that never bans users. It is so much more dangerous to be on the "we avoid banning people unless we have no other choice" end of the spectrum.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jb_ertw yes, that is what @discourse is, but the blog post describes much more subtle forms of interaction

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyhoy aw man I had to use my twitter offline search to even find that tweet! (it's kinda nice when you download all your tweets, twitter gives you a nice little local HTML search page for them)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie I've seen so few groups that were successful at doing this, but I think that's because this tends to happen on platforms that are barely moderated in the first place, so these platforms have multiple problems from the outset

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
It is amazing to me how many of those can be more or less reduced to "holding a grudge". Grudges are so incredibly toxic. It's like drinking poison and expecting the other whatever-it-is to die.
