@codinghorror
@c64_gio What kind of person drives more than 250 miles every day? That is more than 4 hours of driving! Heck of a commute you have there..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulgp @DinaPomeranz Will not be until a major top 40 world city is lost to climate change

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cristianvidmar Yes, but I think even a regular wall plug in front of many businesses and restaurant parking spots will go a looong way versus “only at gas stations”

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nelsonmenezes @joonas_fi that said I have NO idea what things look like in 20 years, except, I bet you a million dollars that batteries will be significantly cheaper than they are now 🤑

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nelsonmenezes @joonas_fi 10 year warranty on the battery is very common

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PolarBearFarm @MCKrempel @dj_ir0ngruve sounds like you can also replace worn out (or underperforming) individual "nodes" of the battery as well? 🤔 makes sense if the battery is a collection of parts rather than one big monolithic thing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Frang this does not seem workable based on the weight, size, and handling risk of batteries that size.. plus the whole design of the car would need to accommodate rapid "cartridge" changeout. We can't even do this on freakin' PHONES so.. uh..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@markjnet https://t.co/xWysSQK9VH looks like a range of 9.81 cents / kWh to 33.43 cents / kWh so yeah.. almost 3x range, though Hawaii is a big outlier. It's "only" about 2x if you account for that.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ohmz I'm skeptical of this hot-swap idea based on the volume, weight, and handling danger of said batteries. Changing that out would NOT be easy, plus the design of the car would need to offer easy access etc. We can't even do this on PHONES!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@c64_gio total range for this particular EV is 250 miles or 402km, to run the battery from 100% to 0%

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@c64_gio Per my earlier tweets, if your range is 200 miles (aka 322 kilometers) every day, you are totally safe with a level 2 charger, assuming 10 hours of home charging per day while you are sleeping. You DO sleep, yes? 😴

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@grevenitisk none of this matters until we get rid of the canker sore that is Trump

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@frje Yeah this was a big reason I didn't want to mess with hybrids. All-electric is sooo much simpler than a mish-mash of both worlds.. Go all in and get the full benefit!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@b11c it helps to live in a smaller country, that's for sure ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@c64_gio it isn't, considering mostly you will charge at home, while sleeping. Level 2 charger is basically akin to saying "I want a washer/dryer at my house". It's not exotic at all.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
$2.80 seems like a reasonable US national average per gallon of gas, currently https://t.co/zpunw8xN8R

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@staticsan Even if they just ran a bunch of boring generic electrical outlets to parking lots, 2% per hour might break you even on "around town" stuff.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JamesMcWS yeah that's what I am getting at. On a long enough horizon (50+ years) gas stations will be like phone booths -- nobody will remember what they were for

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Frang yeah it doesn't seem like you can really push beyond level 3 in a sane way?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Xowap yeah I think that's why they usually don't quote going to 100% they stop at "time to 80%"?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@hybridZer0 yeah it is feeling like the model has to be starbucks, not the current way we think of gas stations where nobody (in their right mind anyway) "hangs out" there

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
or starbucks I guess is a good model for this? get a coffee, chill out for ~20+ mins?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I guess the model has to be "put them places where people already park and spend time eating / shopping / etc" in practice?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This makes me wonder what electric "gas stations" are going to be like in practice, Because even at level 3 that's 1.3% battery per minute.. you'd need at least 10 minutes hanging around at the er.. electricity station.. to "fill up" to 13%.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
So let's see, time from 0 to 80% battery
level 1 (120v) - 40 hours
level 2 (240v) - 10 hours
level 3 (100kw) - 1 hour

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the good news is level 2 chargers aren't complicated, they're basically "washer / dryer" electrical hookups, 240v, and they charge 4x faster. So instead of 2% charge per hour, you'll get 8% per hour. Now you can safely drive 200 miles per day, if that's your jam.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
assuming 10 hours of charge time while you're home from work and sleeping etc, the crappy basic charge solution stops working the minute you need to drive more than 50 miles round trip each day.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gilini https://t.co/yMnwQjKJCE "When Apex Legends first came out, one of the biggest questions players were asking was whether or not we'd be getting Titans"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lobrien well, actually, it's spelled tacti-cool

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
kinda hard to decide now that I've seen this one though https://t.co/GwJJStwjFb

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Michael_MXP I actually prefer it, not even joking

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@johnolilly @bijan also the resale value of apple products is sooo crazily high (unlike virtually all other tech) that it seems a shame to sacrifice that without a case

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bijan it is nice but soooo risky

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
it works! before (Chrome 75) and after (Chrome 76). https://t.co/Jbi1Tfc8vU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@realkpfleming @MCKrempel @mroach Yeah it totally breaks down on so many levels. Just completely inferior in every way.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cwinterb Why, when Waze runs through CarPlay just fine?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard It is opioids, stuff white people like https://t.co/NHkKSNbf3f

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard @MikeIsaac I feel like there is a lesson here for David Simon as well

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mikehadlow Isn’t that what Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nberardi Price mainly, but also we have 5 humans in our family

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@NateTheFinch @caarlos0 It is free, the software is free. Servers tend to cost money but that has naught to do with us.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@therealfitz @tqbf @waldojaquith also I think about that guy who silenced his motion detecting car alarm three times a lot. An awful lot.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wmchristie it's a good choice, there are a bunch of good choices now. No longer bleeding edge, just leading edge. https://t.co/7FLksn8CEj

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard Scott Adams continues to impress

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rossrubin The canon cat was a great example of ideas far ahead of their time, wrapped in dogma guaranteed to kill itself — “no mouse, no menus”

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mattblaze @susanthesquark it's also inevitable if you mix enough people from wildly different cultural backgrounds and languages

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard give this a listen https://t.co/E4bqmkj5Jr -- sadly, "Baltimore, you're home to me" is album only

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles I have some tweets about that somewhere, but I can't find them since I didn't use "The Bridge" in the text.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"This relatively good long-term survival rate is consistent with the observation that suicidal crises are often short-lived, even if there may be underylying, more chronic risk factors present that give rise to these crises." https://t.co/85zaqMYkuH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@msjgriffiths @Carnage4Life oh my bad I didn't realize they killed their online stuff so abruptly, but old guard companies tend to do that. They can't adapt to the new reality.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I mean, maybe. Blockbuster was doomed no matter what since they could not adapt to digital/streaming. Sometimes you're a boat on a rising tide, so simply executing at a decent level is all it takes.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@elliotblackburn I tweeted about it a while back, you'll need to search, not my picture though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GavinBrown @jonobacon @github actually turns out you're right, even doing business in the US at all means you're subject to US laws so .. 🤷♂️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jonobacon @github depending on how things go in 2020, I am seriously considering re-incorporating Discourse outside the USA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thadk it's a technical issue that affects all anonymous browsing, not just "paywalls". Not fixing it would be irresponsible on several levels.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@robertpack84 @jessfraz shouldn't be, the casing is aluminum, platters are thin metal

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
my only complaint is the costume design is.. really.. not good. This is like .. 2006 San Diego comic-con cosplay level superhero outfit work. A-Train in particular looks like something from Rubie's Premium line they ordered off Amazon

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jessfraz do a spinny rust hard drive, those are fun, my daughter loved drilling through the hard drive

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz On the whole I liked Altered Carbon except the random weird two episode interlude in the middle

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz I haven't actually watched Preacher, but I'd say The Boys adaptation is about as solid as it could reasonably be, and I just re-read the first 6-10 issues to jog my memory as well

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Six episodes in, this show is pretty solid? Maybe the best adaptation I've seen since Altered Carbon? It also drops some of the more bizarre and, uh.. dated.. aspects of the comic, which is a plus.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt explore the catalog, I think it'll be up your alley if you like dark, cynical songs

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt Oh my you are in for a treat https://t.co/1hEyIclecD .. enjoy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt ain't no party like a Gilead party 'cause a Gilead party don't stop

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt surely.. surely.. you meant to say Warren Zevon there for the latter

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"the hero moving recklessly at super-speed, runs literally through Robin's body, leaving her boyfriend holding her disembodied hands as the rest of her body liquifies. Knowing that this scene transpires in lovingly shot slow motion may help you understand if this show is for you"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer I need Lambada machines, they are the forbidden code

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer where was that promised?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshmillard feels good https://t.co/QGCCVCQq63

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@integerpoet in that case the native apps are throwing themselves on a proverbial hand grenade and saving the rest of us..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxpancake I do AND I use SHIFT+SPACE to scroll up 😤

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tqbf I went to high school in that county

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Alternate take https://t.co/Ez8bwf2UUh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie to the kickstarters!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@susanthesquark competition is good though. Clouds still way too expensive for what you get. Costs need to go down more.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jarin I was testing the data block, obviously

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@SFBART @deadprogrammer rats with wings

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BobbyAnguelov @billassault @PopCatalin yeah this might have started changing around 2014 but not in 2007-2013

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@billassault @PopCatalin on top of *that*, even a dual core CPU was kinda rare in 2008 so complaining about it now is really .. weird? https://t.co/2GGqKGlIbi

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@billassault @PopCatalin this is a specious complaint because most *current* games barely utilize two cores, much less four or eight.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard well, actually, you can't downvote comments on HN 😏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Google acknowledges this is a problem https://t.co/tKXAX85lOj but the solution in the form of the web already exists and is super-mature.
