@codinghorror
@md2perpe Ran out of graphics memory

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles Older. Crotchetier. Archivier.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DocPop It’s used incorrectly twice arrrrrggghhh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza Naw “we run on super shity old low end devices” killed it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles I just want to watch my kids get faxed important documents

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PokhrelChintan Low quality code, that’s my brand!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paulg I agree with this but missed opportunities via lack of spending would be much harder to quantify. Hiring in particular, what would have happened if they had hired a few more stellar people with new ideas? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek it seems like a reasonable request for competitive modes only to me, not sure why they'd push back so hard

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshk oh I had not heard this, it is excellent

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@msubramaniya @Fahrenthold they could, but so many people charge at home and work

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshsusser @ReinH @rabble @discourse You can disable globally unique topic titles in the site settings, though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Frauenfelder Shouldn’t this be in recomendo? Good idea!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@vicvijayakumar again, watch Years and Years (HBO/BBC). This is literally and explicitly covered there in exactly the manner you're proposing. Try it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT I think what they're reacting to is the perception (probably accurate under Trump) that things are going actively & visibly backwards rather than forwards

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza @gavinpurcell RTS fighting in true 3d was sooo confusing though. Did you play the sequel (well prequel I guess) https://t.co/j2xEnMQ5Fc

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mdavidallen they'll get OTA updates

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tqbf B T C.. it's dyn-o-mite.. B T C .. will win the fight .. B T C.. it's a power load.. B T C.. watch it exploooooode

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this is kinda one of the plotlines in "Years and Years" (HBO/BBC) as well.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@castrojo (looks up briefly, checks "yes, I accept reduced price credit monitoring" on the form)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kpoulsen @AcidOverlord jesus, even this stupid page is thinly veiled Nazi crap, look at the anime avatar

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@castrojo so you're saying you are OK with reduced price credit monitoring

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@xor I still laugh about that one. "So what if our article was a complete made-up fantasy? IT GOT CLICKSSSSS"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@xor I am reminded of https://t.co/Sdc3zOMLb6

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LightStruk agreed but that wasn't possible back then, even if they did it would have cost at *LEAST* 80k+ for a small, weird two seater

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LightStruk Actual cost to sell and make money, it was probably even more than that, keep reading the Wikipedia article.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nberardi I think there are some benchmarks on the pi-hole forums.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryan_southgate yeah the 4 needs some hardware patches to be final ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_Tomalak @Pingu @Freemanix interesting, I hadn't considered this.. so basically DNS encryption isn't of much use at all, no matter how effectively you do it? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryan_southgate I'm theorizing about eventually routing all traffic through the Pi (because clients can in theory hard-code DNS) in which case you'd *need* a Pi 4, but just for DNS no definitely not, it's bigtime overkill

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
[image missing]

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ryan_southgate I actually think this task is better on a Pi 3b (or even a 2), a Pi 4 is kinda overkill and will pull 2x the power.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pingu @_Tomalak @Freemanix I see, so you don't need the DNS at all in that case do you? Just infer the website / domain based on the IP?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Freemanix @_Tomalak no, that still doesn't make sense to me? The HTTPS content is coming from a totally different set of IPs than the DNS-over-HTTPS proxy?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@_Tomalak @Freemanix How so? the only IP being connected to is the DNS-over-HTTPS proxy. As for "do you trust the proxy", my *personal* threat model is more about potential man-in-the-middle

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
guide at https://t.co/2J80ShGkI1 .. pretty easy!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tooshel Funnily enough Woot had exactly this scooter on a special for $330 today. It sold out though.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eyebrowsofpower That was not good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
or at least an underwater drone maybe https://t.co/kWiXYv72TL

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tooshel I'm extrapolating a tiny bit, but as you can see the (very, very good!) Xiaomi M365 is down to $349 at times https://t.co/vpL7xekMWT

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@spies_please whoo glad you added that haha at the end because I was about to be super angry with this thought

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@opinionmachine @Hihaj also goosed on by gasoline prices going up and up and up

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@opinionmachine @Hihaj this won't happen overnight, it will slowly ramp up over time naturally due to costs slooowly decreasing

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hihaj also level 2 chargers tend to be on timers anyway, for example we have ours set up not to charge at all until 9:10pm for off-peak electricity rates.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hihaj not really -- imagine everyone ran a hair dryer at the same time. That's about the impact of a basic level 1 (albeit slow, maybe covering "only" 50 miles/day) charger.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hihaj would it? Everyone plugs things into electrical sockets, don't they? Just moving some sockets closer to the parking spots certainly is no major change at all. Buy extension cords ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hihaj fuel cell seems like it's gonna be niche to me, maybe for buses or long distance trucks?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Hihaj yeah the main objections were a) it's still 20 years out (maybe 10 at this point) and b) it was used by lobbyists / legislators as a feint to distract people from electric, not at all in good faith

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@staypufd What will the next battery wave be I wonder?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MarkVillacampa battery tech still sucked in 2001 though, same problem with electric cars. Lithium Ion had to happen for things to progress. This makes me wonder, what's the next battery stage? 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MarkVillacampa this is absolutely true in my opinion, the analog is perfect and dead on

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
anyways, it only took 18 years ... but we just about have the world originally envisioned by the Segway with surprisingly decent $200-$300 electric scooters

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisfralic @elonmusk aha it's called "Revenge of..". Watching that now as a sequel!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@lnplum @staypufd @chrisfralic @elonmusk hasn't there, though? This video says billions of dollars of R&D have been put into making hydrogen work. Good news is the chassis bits between electric and hydrogen are almost identical, just take out the batteries, slap in the cell, yeah?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Stanford Ovshinsky, inventor of the NiMH battery. Died in 2012. RIP my friend. https://t.co/Est631Ltub

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
how you see the future when you've been in the business of delivering petroleum for the last 100 years. Just need a new improved liquid fuel, obvs https://t.co/rISvIS9jCb

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
wait so the "bargain" Clinton/Gore made with the US car companies to (again, cynically) pursue hybrids in exchange for no fuel economy standard changes.. scared the Japanese auto companies into making real actual hybrids that worked? 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I think this web page about the GM EV1 is straight outta 1999 https://t.co/zNgnfeyh6B

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chrisfralic @elonmusk I found where Elon called Hydrogen "fool cells" .. then I looked up the current state of hydrogen vehicles and I'm inclined to agree 🤣

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
GM EV1 was $80-$100k (in 1999 dollars I guess), 70-100 mile range with original ~18 kWh lead acid battery, 100-140 mile range with ~26.4 kWh NiMH. Even with an optimal regulatory and incentive path.. would EVs have succeeded by 2006? I'm thinking.. no.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong that's the only actionable stuff in the list anyway @pinboard -- not like you're gonna confront a retiree, but you certainly might choose not to do business with "Precision Pipe Rentals" and encourage others similarly

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong might have been better to focus on just the people that represent businesses, perhaps? As in, "do you want to do business here?"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PierceGardner @kevinomccarthy If you view sharing freely available completely public information as "targeting" maybe you should stop and consider why your political party has become so toxic

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevinomccarthy Pretty soon there won't even be a republican party in California, so your days are numbered, pal.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jstanton617 @Cloudflare well the fact that the founder of the company has hand-selected exceptions *twice* now certainly does not bode well for the whole "we're just a dumb pipe, man!" argument.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@philipwhiuk @Cloudflare so what you're saying is, it *is* true, since it got taken down, exactly like we expected it to. Working as designed.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamestalmage @Cloudflare on top of that, most CDNs are far less sanguine about doing business with hate orgs which are *bad* for business.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jamestalmage @Cloudflare watch and see. The nation-state level DDoS prevention service CF provides -- for FREE -- is worth tens of thousands of dollars per month (maybe even hundreds of thousands).

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wwkeyboard @Cloudflare they can't afford them because cloudflare is free. Nation state level DDoS protection for free is an *incredibly* valuable service. That'd be tens of thousands of dollars per month from any other provider. If not more.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jstanton617 @Cloudflare "I sold a guy some bandwidth and he later turned out to be a Nazi". The chink in their armor is that nobody gives a shit about bandwidth, they care about nation-state level DDoS protection which is *extremely* rare and expensive.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jstanton617 @Cloudflare I'm sorry, but I still disagree with this characterization. Does T-Mobile "choose to do business with Nazis"? Now what CF *thinks* they are, and what they actually are, are two (sadly for them) very different things.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jstanton617 @Cloudflare I don't think that's the decision -- it's all about self-identity as a "dumb pipe". This is, unfortunately for them, just plain untrue and pursuing it is delusional. They're a nation-state level DDoS prevention service.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @jstanton617 @Cloudflare when your whole identity hinges on "we're just a dumb pipe" you don't have any other choice. Turns out, CloudFlare isn't a dumb pipe, they're a nation-state level ultra-luxe DDoS prevention service. WHO KNEW?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deadprogrammer eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@onalark @Cloudflare the darknet is a giant pain in the ass to use, so it moves the friction / participation / publicity bar way up over "tap on the browser icon"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
this is how @CloudFlare is lying to you in practice. Without their nation-state level DDoS protection, hate sites *cannot* exist on the internet. Point proven.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard more seriously, the answer seems to be "improve security for all humans" and the campaigns, since they are ostensibly being run by humans, get the benefit. (This also means Google, Apple, etc just not under the explicit banner of "elections")

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard pretty sure this can all be handled by an election security app on my beloved Lòudòng SB250 phone

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@asmeurer incorrect -- the exact opposite is true. The easier it is to leave a meaningless drive-by comment, the lower the bar, the worse your comments will be. Friction is a feature, sometimes.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@asmeurer correct. You go to the community site, which is at a different subdomain, and has full community vetting.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@asmeurer try actually entering a comment at the bottom of that blog post (or any codinghorror blog post). I dare ya! I double dog dare ya!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong I do love a good Elisha reference https://t.co/82UzSSGWKO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain @textfiles I'm like 99% sure I had that issue and read it cover to cover as a 15 year old. I was all-in on Amiga... all-in

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain it's actually printed in a magazine though. Page 66, Amiga World magazine, issue #1, 1985 https://t.co/HZN3GQXmDk
