@ryan_southgate I'm theorizing about eventually routing all traffic through the Pi (because clients can in theory hard-code DNS) in which case you'd *need* a Pi 4, but just for DNS no definitely not, it's bigtime overkill

@Hihaj also level 2 chargers tend to be on timers anyway, for example we have ours set up not to charge at all until 9:10pm for off-peak electricity rates.

@Hihaj not really -- imagine everyone ran a hair dryer at the same time. That's about the impact of a basic level 1 (albeit slow, maybe covering "only" 50 miles/day) charger.

@Hihaj yeah the main objections were a) it's still 20 years out (maybe 10 at this point) and b) it was used by lobbyists / legislators as a feint to distract people from electric, not at all in good faith

@MarkVillacampa battery tech still sucked in 2001 though, same problem with electric cars. Lithium Ion had to happen for things to progress. This makes me wonder, what's the next battery stage? 🤔

GM EV1 was $80-$100k (in 1999 dollars I guess), 70-100 mile range with original ~18 kWh lead acid battery, 100-140 mile range with ~26.4 kWh NiMH. Even with an optimal regulatory and incentive path.. would EVs have succeeded by 2006? I'm thinking.. no.

@wwkeyboard @Cloudflare they can't afford them because cloudflare is free. Nation state level DDoS protection for free is an *incredibly* valuable service. That'd be tens of thousands of dollars per month from any other provider. If not more.

@Pinboard more seriously, the answer seems to be "improve security for all humans" and the campaigns, since they are ostensibly being run by humans, get the benefit. (This also means Google, Apple, etc just not under the explicit banner of "elections")
