Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cosetthetable @NathanBowers but.. but.. if it was Chili's?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kfrench581 @shog9 it's still one vote, you just pick your top 3 in order of preference. And I think you can still pick only 1 if you really want to? "Voters can rank as many or as few candidates as they want to" https://t.co/fFEt0MeWBA

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@shog9 I'd definitely like to see https://t.co/A1NPxz1ivK and ranked choice voting in my lifetime but I'm not sure either will happen

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@shog9 the original article reads a bit like a distressed Bernie Bro, rather than an objective view..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mathowie A+++ would view again

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@biesnecker @zeynep "this week is the most worrisome development of the last four years." is complete BS. A trump re-election would have been far more worrisome.. basically, as I said, a death sentence. That said, still lots of work to do, and we can't get complacent.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zeynep Also, I fully expect Trump himself to run in 2024. I will be shocked if he does not.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zeynep no. I agree there is much work to be done, but "four more years of Trump" was a death sentence. We should be allowed to celebrate that.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza The Mississippi weed thing passing was also instructive

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tylercowen Still unprecedented levels of deep partisanship

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zoftie they covered how Newton was released in the same time frame even though GM was an Apple spin-off (which I actually didn't know!)

I've seen "Requiem for a Dream", and if that's the one he could read, I can only imagine what The Room was like

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT Yet again proving you are a person of exquisite and refined tastes

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz @mitemitreski to be clear I missed that part of the article on first read, and I am NOT a Thiel "fan".

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"Slow mode" may also be helpful and timely (it's a brand new feature) https://t.co/qkcNWXZZlq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BevanMcCabe you called it!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@psaffo oh, so Bill Gates can track me with 5G towers? NO THANKS PAUL SAFFO

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@djbaskin I've gotten a little flavor of this with text-banking for the election and it's .. interesting.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles this was one of your better rants, A+++ would tweetstorm again

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard I always thought it was this https://t.co/gudjiIsUvB

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PetrusTheron @jwz it definitely could have been handled more gracefully (at least a two year announced phase-out) and was clearly motivated by the "strategy tax" of Google+ .. but the trends were already in motion, so this merely accelerated them

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza it definitely could have been handled a lot more gracefully (multiple year phase-out?), clearly "we gotta push Google+" was the primary motivation.. but the trend was already underway. This merely accelerated it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Donny_V seems extremely low risk to me, plus, the one I generated is the "guest" wi-fi which confers no access to local systems

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Donny_V why does it matter? How are you gonna get to Istanbul to connect to that particular wi-fi network, even in the unlikely event that the "pure local JS" was somehow recording everything? This is tinfoil hat territory we're entering.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@popcorneaterman 👍 (I agree with your general point that "people are different" but.. I don't agree that the majority of people want the interruption of a phone call, and I think the % of people who feel this way is increasing every second of every day.)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@popcorneaterman well, I'd argue a voice call is kinda ridiculous in terms of interrupting someone's day. It's pretty invasive!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@popcorneaterman telegrams? ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@popcorneaterman are.. are.. faxes on the table? ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@popcorneaterman to me, voice call feels extra invasive, in a way that a text is not.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cygnim so you actually get 50 texts per day about voting? I'd like to see a screenshot of this. ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek @cliffski thank you both! 🙇♀️ we work really hard to keep improving the experience, and as always, 100% open source..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@IwriteOK @NathanBowers I bet they constantly discuss it on Facebook™

Jeff Atwood

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard hopefully this will end up like the Bloomberg Presidency money

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard @deadprogrammer I have not yet decided if Michael will be allowed in my underground bunker

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard yes, but I need to retain some funds for my underground bunker because you already told us like 50 fucking times that Trump is gonna win anyway

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard have you seen The Electoral College

@codinghorror
Enter as password:

If you then press [5] on the numeric keypad during the game, you will get the password to the next level.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bijan down-ballot gets voters out in general, which amplifies upstream, e.g. https://t.co/M6GuZi1G8X the section under "give to downballot candidates".. worth a very close read

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@rands just make sure it's down-ballot. the big races are drowning in cash that they have no effective way to spend

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@audonamission in recent memory, Blair Witch probably? but I found it a letdown

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@michael_nielsen @tylercowen yeah, we have a thousand year storm president, so it's hard to look away from the thousand year storm .. unfortunately

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu let me clarify: when I say iron fisted I do mean *fair* moderation, from a *group* of moderators making decisions collectively. One common failure pattern in communities is having one person make all the decisions. Everyone has bad days, and some people truly are not good at it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu this is why I have always been in the "iron fist moderation" camp. It's also (often) why people get annoyed with Stack Overflow. So many rules.. why all the rules.. let me just do what I want to do.. how dare you tell me what to do.. etc.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pamelafox @jeetsukumaran even writing, math, etc pales in comparison to the importance of language. Relates to all the advice I constantly give about learning to be a great communicator. This will get you so, so far in life. So much farther than "programming".

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu the historic problem with Reddit is that they never considered moderation a primary goal (early libertarian bent) so it didn't get prioritized as a product feature. This kind of cultural thing is very difficult to fix after the fact, but they have made some progress so 👍

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@danluu damn it now I need to hurry over to Reddit
haha just kidding hell no, that place is 90% toxic (yes, usual caveats, there are some super heavily moderated subreddits that can be good)
haha just kidding hell no, that place is 90% toxic (yes, usual caveats, there are some super heavily moderated subreddits that can be good)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pamelafox the way babies acquire (and experiment with) language is one of my absolute favorite things about being a parent! Being a human must have *realllly* sucked before we invented language. For real yo.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxpancake @Beschizza I indirectly know this person a little (long story) and it's also consistent with all the other writing, both public and private, I've seen from this person

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AngerMCS @MissQuickstep @ID_AA_Carmack @danielbowen @googlechrome @Android nvidia in particular is *extremely* competent. And you forgot Intel, who also dropped out.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bijan not Biden. down-ticket! (or both if you want to feel extra fancy, but the smart $ is all down ticket)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AngerMCS @MissQuickstep @ID_AA_Carmack @danielbowen @googlechrome @Android I just wish there was *any*, literally *ANY* other viable choice for Android device SoCs than Qualcomm. I think it's a fairly simple, understandable desire that would have clear benefits for the entire market.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AngerMCS @MissQuickstep @ID_AA_Carmack @danielbowen @googlechrome @Android personally I'm a fan of Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation for the data is closest to the truth: Qualcomm just really, really, *really* sucks at their job.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@AngerMCS @MissQuickstep @ID_AA_Carmack @danielbowen @googlechrome @Android It speaks to the competencies of the two hardware orgs, and the 3.6x - 3x gap is on a similar scale to the JavaScript (2x-3x) and geekbench single threaded (2x) gaps. If you need more evidence than this, we're rapidly getting into conspiracy theory territory. 🤪

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
So far, because I had to go back and keep track:
Sat: FL
Fri: MN
Thu: AZ
Wed: TX
Tue: NC
Mon: top 40, 10 neediest

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tqbf Ugh, I see he is tripling down. Always a grrrreat look.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Video encoding results are always fun! That’s a 3.6x performance advantage for people keeping score at home. https://t.co/OoP8Q9GX2z https://t.co/I60No9X40Z

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MissQuickstep @AngerMCS @ID_AA_Carmack @danielbowen @googlechrome @Android Nah. See these video encoding results. 3.6x slower on Qualcomm 865 https://t.co/OoP8Q9GX2z https://t.co/pNhg6IL9iP

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@carolynz @susanthesquark So good and SOOO weird!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JustinLardinois @susanthesquark So so good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BradleyAllanD Yeah it‘s not as good as the original, but a completely respectable sequel.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard This is for you, and all of us, you magnificent bastard https://t.co/l0KIpNI9b1

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@susanthesquark Rango and Megamind are my favorite underrated “kids” movies

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Sanakism can you list some other good examples so I can check them out? Irredeemable is already in the replies and I've already read it. Plus Watchmen is maybe my #1 graphic novel of all time. I remember eagerly waiting for each issue and devouring it and having my mind blown

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi Needs a "But why tho?" voting option

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kwiens now that camera advances have kinda slowed / stabilized, even more reason to argue that the SoC is a liability.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@MaximilianoKorp @kevinhooke In case it wasn't 100% clear from my previous tweets, my beef is with the Qualcomm monoculture, *not* Android

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Luisrebollo1 the music for that scene as well! {another chef's kiss}
