@codinghorror
@bijan oh no, so sorry to hear. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

@codinghorror
@BamaDude77 @Pinboard @migueldeicaza @ben_a_adams That's fine; this is one of those cases where I feel the perfect is the enemy of the good. 🤷♂️
(also, Maciej is almost always right about these sorts of things)
(also, Maciej is almost always right about these sorts of things)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@firasd hmm. hadn't thought about that.. interesting..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard @migueldeicaza @ben_a_adams when are extremes *ever* good? I don't understand the absolutism here Miguel. It's unlike you.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gerikson totally the opposite for me.. I can't read analog worth a damn.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sanjaypoyzer I say this because it's something you have to actively work against to avoid it happening, especially if you are a guy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Beschizza yeah it's gotta be from the dell monitors. Who uses their monitor as a hub, anyways??

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ekultails @sbarnea do you have a 2.5 gb switch? they are tough to find!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@YahayaJamal10 I wish I had the time! Keep learning! 🤗

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek eating popcorn dot gif

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wingedpig high five, fellow old-ster!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sbarnea meh, disagree. 2.5 gigabit is an important step forward and we need that standardized before jumping all the way to 10

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bdickason oh man I'm not the best to ask for that but @kwiens is!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mirza oh yes I adore the Phantom Canyon, loved the Hades Canyon, also the Skull Canyon.. and Ghost Canyon is just (chef's kiss).. overpriced, but *nothing* like these boxes in this form factor. They are BMWs and worth it.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ClumsyPilot I'm going with Anker "intel certified", I hope this turns out OK: https://t.co/TFJ9OsAlAx

Pretty much sustained, not sure what's happening at the end, but solid https://t.co/Qr00cePXAV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I have to say.. kinda 👎. I prefer the Shin Black. https://t.co/UVShAp8ZoH

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
huh, so maybe 40-50 megabytes per second at .. 20 feet distance with a few walls in the way? obama-not-bad.gif https://t.co/3xnldIuzE9

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@caribbeanxblue @Midar3 bang on

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@m_adduci latest Orbi, which I highly recommend! I had previous gen Orbi too. Rock solid. 1 plus satellite.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pchandrasekar That said! I was just curating this question, which needs updating for 2021 and I face the same problem: https://t.co/tkcdS2ps6J
👇 could use some upvotes as the newer, more correct answer.
👇 could use some upvotes as the newer, more correct answer.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@pchandrasekar It's like trying to decide which child is your favorite child! Well, OK, fine, it's actually Stack Overflow. 👶🏆

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain wow let's discuss a LOT of stuff on that website

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tuck1s @tischsoic @zitterbewegung @epvh yeah but these pale in perf next to M1. It's like Qualcomm's ARM license.. and their work is thoroughly mediocre, at best

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
We made these cool (and quality!) promotional yo-yos a while back, and someone from the yo-yo discourse community made me this neat laser engraved yo-yo stand 🥰 https://t.co/Q7Xfve4CsS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles can't you run a custom stylesheet locally that hides the named DIVs? If you use twitter in web.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zitterbewegung @epvh yeah, Apple has been remarkably cautious. They've had silicon *significantly* faster than the best Intel and AMD stuff for at least 2 generations now, and arguably 3 (A12, A13, A14). The trend was pretty clear by A9.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bartoncasey fair, but renaming a bunch of files I wouldn't consider this crazy edgy super weird thing to need that almost never happens in practice

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles who could have possibly predicted this outcome

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@drewtetz and that banana taped to a wall, that was awesome, plus the guy eating it. all art!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@drewtetz well yeah, the funny part is part of the art, too, like dada and Banksy and Koons and all that stuff

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the other winner is
cmd /c "ren *.doc *.doc.tmp"
but that's kinda cheating, which is OK, I suppose.. all of the Unix command line is a variety of cheating in numerous clever ways

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the shortest <air quote> winner </air quote> from all the replies is
ls *.doc | % { ren $_ $("$_.tmp") }
which means we all lose 😢

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@wouterdekort @iamtraction try it yourself: does not work

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CrshOverride try it yourself and see: no

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@vzeman79 mv : Cannot process argument because the value of argument "path" is not valid. Change the value of the "path" argument and run the operation again

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@emilianbr that is seriously horrible, if it is the best we can do.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gigatexal @RuurdKeizer I'd LOVE to see a chromebook with M1. That'd kinda be my dream non-development machine, tbh. Not a fan of OS X, but very much a mega-superfanboy of browser-based OS

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cperrin88 @coreyh wait I can't read this. where's the rename target?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente eh, there are short synonyms in a lot of places

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Pinboard yeah, the frog slowly boiling analogy is sadly on point. This is why I continue to say climate change won't be taken seriously until the first major world city is lost to it. I wish it wasn't so, but 😭

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mrcbergamin @mjbiren you would get a +50% for sure though, if you went to 10th or 11th gen. But AMD is winning pretty hard right now if you care about cores as well as per-thread perf!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mrcbergamin @mjbiren yeah Haswell ("4th gen" by the current nomenclature) was the gen where they got serious about reducing power consumption. We're still wating for the next real architecture change after Skylake ("6th gen"). And we're on 11th gen now! 🤦♂️

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@epvh yeah they could pull the trigger and own that entire market in, like, a year. That's the scary thing for AMD and Intel.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@cumpsd 2070 super which I am now selling at a profit because crypto

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@PaulMitchum as it should be!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Ghost Canyon is a beautifully designed NUC. Truly a pleasure to work on; so sleek and compact. Plus integrated 80 plus titanium PSU, so no giant power brick. https://t.co/CIntJQ1QXv

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@GeospatialMe me too. I consider half more or less full from the perspective of being protected. next appt is 25 days out!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tensor_bodega I feel like this about Firefox, BUT, they have legit improved their JS perf a lot! 💪

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Amazon could do better, for sure, but I can think of a mile long list of companies *way* more evil than Amazon.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@gisli 50 USA. I just made the age cutoff by 3 months .. for my county in California

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
While we are hard-no-ing things, here’s another hard no https://t.co/Wzov2W1e04

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JonBright I'm sure @jonskeet would be delighted to hear that 👏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@aordring yeah, I know. I wish I could wave a magic wand and increase everyone's salaries.. I am big time in favor of increased minimum wage, and universal basic income.. I wish I had the power to make that happen, all I can do is support it

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Trying to mix it up! A squirrel -- I swear to god this actually happened -- stole one of the Reese's peanut butter cup packages and took it up in the tree to eat it. We already move the basket inside at night so the trash pandas don't eat it! https://t.co/Jpv6KeIAkE

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain ahhhh you bring so much joy to the world Paul. As always, send my best to Ms. Train.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain (grabs water bottle and sprays) NO PAUL! NO!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx yeah on our older servers I wish so badly I could wave a magic wand and turn them all into new AMD machines.. we have purchased several racks of awesome AMD goodness and now I'm spoiled!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx but in general I would say interest in bifurcation is directly proportional to the number of cores on offer. Intel not doing so hot in this area, if you haven't noticed 😉

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx for the system in question, quad wouldn't work -- Ghost Canyon. Not enough lanes. Also _might_ not have enough cores (8c/16t), but I can't tell yet, the data is not there. This is my first bifurcation experiment so I thought I'd start small.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@raccettura no! I demand that you desist, so that I may proceed ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi no, sorry, we're all just here for the oven.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles nice. Which model is this specifically?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
ah, should have mentioned, above times are times to copy a single k32 Chia plot at 101GB, or 108,876,004,888 bytes.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles worth it! I have one and it's awesome!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt possibly. I lived in a relatively dipstick area of the USA as well.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ericlippert that is me and us at every beach, stereotypically true

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
it's kind of silly, but I love the zen of digging holes at the beach.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@devopstom unless you brought actual hydraulic equipment, I don't think that's even *possible*

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chx yeah a triple monitor portable folding thing has DEFINITE appeal, in a batcave kinda way .. what's out there? you are my go-to person on amazing obscure tech items!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong remember that guy that fell in that hole that one time? I hope he's OK!!

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I can also nerd out over pens and pencils with the best of 'em!! Just released, the magical and inexpensive G-750! https://t.co/dbJA39BwKf

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@thirstybear @bryanl @ecomba yes, but if the org is VERY VERY large you may never see that person. At any small or medium org absolutely, see:
https://t.co/YvhBcJ0cV4
https://t.co/9bv1Wfygcq
https://t.co/YvhBcJ0cV4
https://t.co/9bv1Wfygcq

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I think I overpaid a bit for that domain because the guy was a little *too* happy 😁

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles yeah 2FA/MFA makes me just laugh and laugh at potential hackers. Good fucking luck.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jcoehoorn yeah the wikipedia tension absorbed from that model is substantial.. but that strictness is part of the reason it all works, so.. it's a tradeoff

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza Me? Nothing. It is fantasy football for finance nerds. I don’t know if you noticed but fantasy football is, like, a trillion dollar industry. And it is so so very dumb. But. People are gonna people.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eddasaurus @Carnage4Life So like.. sharepoint, then? Didn’t Bill Gates appoint himself the PM of sharepoint back in the day because it was so strategic?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@castrojo is this a new design / model?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life do you think this will kill Teams (I think it *definitely* will), or is it to bolster Xbox One which lost against the PS4/PS5?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@OmarShahine yeah, vertical is at a premium. widescreen cost.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza I always thought that too, but I now believe bitcoin et al are here to stay, for better or worse. All we can do is support the eco-friendly versions, so that's what I'm doing.
