@chetfaliszek @Qt3 you're welcome, be sure to share those sweeet deals with me too

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@brianstegmann ranked (resorted) posts can never work for discussion IMO, very different animal

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@b0rk yes and it came out amazing! Ruby needs more performance tools, so this was greatly appreciated! 👏

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
the most deeply funny thing about this reply, as with all great humor, is how it slyly acknowledges that telling the truth is hilarious

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
sorry, I should have said, the question is "got any yoyo-related pickup lines?"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @ArsenTufankjian I trust you. Mark calendar for four years from now. We'll decide then.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mbesto @ArsenTufankjian also not multiplayer at all

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@mbesto @ArsenTufankjian wasn't free to play, completely different thing. Died with the $2.99 "game" app model

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles @ArsenTufankjian I will take that bet! Where do we both donate to, depending on who wins?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT also suuuper kid friendly (unlike "hardcore" games) so expect people to be playing this from ages 7 to 100

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KristyT it's a free-to-play third person shooter battle royale game (one eventual winner in a large match of ~100 players). It's just executed.. like.. perfectly on every possible level, technical / business / design

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
They will write entire business books about what Epic did with Fortnite. Mark my words. This is only the beginning

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@OffBeatMammal it really, really isn't good

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxpancake @coreyh @dasharez0ne Did you replace the teflon feet pads? Those *definitely* don't last forever.. probably easy-ish to find replacements for such a common MS model though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life if you are a web search engine your literal core competency *is* your crawler. Search results can only ever be as good as your crawl. And precious little competency has been demonstrated here over the last decade... since you asked.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life Oh, and that's an experience I've had OVER A DECADE OF TIME

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I can't even begin to articulate the badness of the Bing crawler, and how I've personally had to deal with its profound badness at Stack Overflow and Discourse. Let's just say this is not Microsoft's A team on Bing. To be real with you, it's not even the C team.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kevindente do I use Firefox?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nicolasbonnici LOL even I wouldn't go that far

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
I get the business argument for doing this. But does that mean Mozilla is a .. good.. business? I'm gonna say.. no? Let's really think this through.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxpancake @dasharez0ne the specific choice of the original MS intellimouse is next level here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life I suggest Microsoft drop Bing, which has similarly poor adoption after many years, and switch to Google search

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Carnage4Life This was a bad long term call in my opinion. Monoculture is like the days of IE6.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong I think definitely yes. But they have to ask hard questions of themselves, and Facebook is too in love with Facebook to do that. See also https://t.co/VbVxw4lMAU

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deworde 🤷♂️ for some folks, anything other than "we unconditonally accept what you type in this box, no questions asked" is unacceptable. See https://t.co/QpiBf849bw

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@migueldeicaza I know the feeling

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deworde if that's the downside, I am 105% on board with the nature of enquiry (inquiry?)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@deworde "philosophical points about the nature of enquiry" is the basis of all intelligent life, tho 🤔

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxy I don't know why this is so funny to me. These people are totally incompetent.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@paultiseo yes, it does. It'd be more like 12 times cheaper without that

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@LeaVerou Totally unacceptable behavior. I can't believe men do this. So dumb.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
"could survive a (very small) meteor strike" is tough to compete with

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
In related news, Firefox market share now below 10% https://t.co/1GVbxnbTDV

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheJohnnyFuzz @chetfaliszek this is absolutely *NOTHING* compared to what the bombers are doing. MG42 is pretty balanced as-is IMO, I don't see people regularly going 50-0 and 100-0 like the bombers are on certain game modes

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@chetfaliszek @TheJohnnyFuzz Some of the assault fully auto weapons are definitely a bit too accurate at distance, other than that I think it's mostly fine. The medic submachine guns are actually getting an accuracy (range) buff from what I understand.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheJohnnyFuzz @chetfaliszek also if you want to talk bullshit.. the bombers. my god the bomber runs on the 2 objective breakthrough maps where everyone is clustered. They go 100-0

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@TheJohnnyFuzz @chetfaliszek the other team must have been suuuper bad. MG42 *requires* you to be prone or on bipod, which means you're a sitting duck once the other team knows your position. Set up right it is monstrous, but heavy restrictions, it's balanced in my book.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@phpdreams which models? Links? Do they have the colored LED for power indicator?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@stevesi it's hard to explain to people now, but this was really cutting edge GUI stuff at the time, and we pored over each new big MSFT product release in great detail for insight on GUI futures..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@seesharp It's the new "oldies", like 50s music used to be when I was .. er.. 30 years younger?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@DanGill @theodoredziuba @erraggy @FHDaily Based on evidence to date, I've stopped expecting better, in this particular case.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
And so it begins https://t.co/65wPDqVn0j

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tobermatt Requires an unreasonable amount of energy

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@FHDaily @theodoredziuba Why would you retweet this horseshit? Reflects poorly on you.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@tqbf he's also in Hackers (1995)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@scottwasson looks like a rendering though

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BEBischof @lexfridman totally fine, you followed up, and it is a complaint I have heard before so I don't think it is unfounded

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain this tweet was ahead of its time

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@BEBischof @lexfridman Well now you've kinda hurt my feelings, Doctor Donut.

@textfiles I use you as my template Jason

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@textfiles hard decisions are always the right decisions

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@dataandme @topepos @KirkegaardEmil thank you, that is the perfect reference point with real live examples

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@L_R_T How so? There is no special aging like there is in reddit (exponential decay of “topic” over time)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ClayNichols may not be true, though: https://t.co/MBaqz0fufh

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@eyebrowsofpower I don't know; also per this talk (starts at 3 mins) you can get suspended from Twitter for telling your best friend "I will fucking kill you" https://t.co/SPbmkFjGL4

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
literally IDENTICAL topic from 7 years ago, on reddit. War. War never changes. https://t.co/hdkql3ciwp

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@jwz Yahoo is bad at LITERALLY EVERYTHING. They're notorious for this email silent discard crap.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@nicholas__head @bethesda send the money to their competitors in the future ;)

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@ftrain it's so wrong and dirty.. yet SO RIGHT

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@JamesMcCormack @gains_tweets these are delightfully wrong in so many ways

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@j4ddie @Karunamon When the status quo is “basically broken when viewed on any smartphone” your statistical chances of survival as a community are .. dire.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@j4ddie @Karunamon Forums this old usually don’t work at all on mobile, you have to use some third party app to transmogrify the content into a sane mobile format.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshmanders Six of one, half dozen of the other. Without a regular influx of new users you are already dead at the macro timescale.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bara @discourse Keeping out new users is the main one. They are comfortable with the same group, which will only ever get smaller through attrition.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@Karunamon I feel communities like this which actively resist change are implicitly acknowledging that they *want* to go down with the ship, and they *know* it will go down.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@bara You can certainly refer them to @discourse, but there is an aspect of "leading the horse to water" here

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@zeh Sure, that's why we founded @discourse -- feel free to use it. 100% free 😉

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
Count the ratio of content to non-content pixels on this forum page. Also ☹ because the content is about kids and well-being https://t.co/N1XExw8xsr

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
This is a side effect of software so crappy no new (and sane) people are ever going to want to join up. All you end up with is the old cranky "never change anything" brigade and those people are.. let's just say, "not fun"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KoryNunn ... if it's something they actually *care* about in the first place. There is a different, and probably better, argument to be made in favor of caring less about stuff in general, and picking only battles you really have to.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@KoryNunn I don't find this to be true in practice. It takes years, even decades, to change people's minds on anything that matters.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@waxpancake @waxy super minimalist?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim So yeah if I want a *guaranteed* new in box item, I buy from Amazon *NOT* eBay for that reason. Otherwise I know there is risk for a "deal"

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim I guess I view AirBnB as more of an eBay type experience. Whether the item matches the description ultimately isn't eBay's fault, but the seller's.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim @CallMeAreks It's interesting because it extends beyond tit-for-tat, as the guest and host reviews are published simultaneously and independently.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@joshk While we're at it, can we please get rid of "killing it" as a metaphor for success? That has always bothered me.

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@CallMeAreks @amyjokim In that case @amyjokim this couldn't be retaliatory tit-for-tat, it's both parties leaving negative feedback independently

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim Yes it was this, did they regress it?? https://t.co/RJzJ42UZgC

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@amyjokim I talked to someone working at AirBNB a while ago about this and they developed a system where reviews go up simultaneously in lockstep (guest and host) so there's not a retaliatory nature to it?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@millross @applepies awful performance AND terrible security, I ask you, what's not to love about Android, really?

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@sarahjeong @reckless does it involve lasers.. and sauce..

Jeff Atwood
@codinghorror
@kemitchell get back in your cabin and turn off the internet!! 🤗
