@tlesher @headmelted it is MUCH MUCH *MUCH* easier to pay the bills by *not* starting your own company though. You opt into considerable ongoing pain via that route, so people need to be aware of that tradeoff and have massive impetus for getting past it.

@jimmcslim @kalpha NVMe isn't *required* but it is a significantly cleaner build for a single drive system IMO, and of course 2x - 3x faster though the disk speed is basically at "obscene" levels, far beyond what's needed in their particular role.

@rchrdbyd Automatic unattended updates for Ubuntu Server already work fine, as they do on most other OSes. Modern SSDs have miniscule fail rates relative to old school spinning rust drives. Colo provider has UPSes. Still not meteor-proof of course.

@jacobastultz we find cloud hosting to be 10x more expensive than our colocation hosting, primarily because "one machine" is rarely enough, and the costs keep multiplying per machine. I'd say it mostly depends on duration. If you know you need dedicated machines for X years..

@jacobastultz yes, scaling up and down is a fair concern, particularly if your peaks and valleys are extreme. Hardware is cheap, but if you need to scale, say, 100x.. not cheap to run 100x hardware all the time that you pay for up front.
